A/N: I don't own Harry Potter or any related characters
This is for Fantasy February
Day One
Every morning when you first look in a mirror, you see a small piece of advice for that day, such as "take the subway to work" or "don't try the free pizza". Today, the mirror simply says, "RUN"
Word Count: 999
Run
Sahara Bones tried not to look at the mirror too much. It wasn't exactly natural how it always had a piece of advice. She'd been assure time and time again it was nothing more than an enchantment. The mirror had been a wedding gift, but there had been no card included.
Yesterday the mirror had advised her to stay home. That hadn't been too hard to follow. Little Susan'd been sniffling and sneezing all night. Sahara had been exhausted. Jakob was missing in action. He'd been working as a field healer for the auror's office. With the war looming over them, Sahara worried constantly about him.
She knew Jakob's auntie was a huge part the ministry that was in charge of trying to catch Lord Voldemort. So far, no magical means had succeeded in even locating him. Jakob tried to keep in contact with her through letters, but those had stopped coming. She'd even gone as far as to cast a scrying spell on the magical mirror, figuring the magic would only help boost the spell. All she'd seen was the mirror's usual frosted glass.
"Mama?" Susan asked, toddling into the room. Sarah smiled at her daughter, as she turned to look down at her, the mirror caught her attention. She froze. Today, the mirror only had one word printed in its frosty glass. "RUN". Sahara's heart pounded in her chest. She'd been waiting, worrying about this since the beginning. Jakob was from a pure-blood family, part of the sacred 28. Sahara was a muggle-born witch.
"Susan, I think we need to go out today, we might not be back by bedtime, why don't you go grab your octopus?" she asked, trying to keep her voice light. Susan was still recovering from her cold. Sahara grabbed a few things while Susan grabbed her toy. There was a change of clothes for the both of them, a few important documents, and Sahara's wand. She barely used it, preferring to do things the way she'd been brought up.
"Ready?" she asked, strapping Susan into the pram.
"Rweady," Susan answered. Sahara nodded, her face grim as she took off running, her feet pounding against the pavement. She wasn't sure where she was supposed to be running to, where she would end up. The mirror's advice was never this vague. A small idea sparked in the back of Sahara's mind. Jakob's auntie. She lived in the wizarding world, she would know what to do.
"Point me," she whispered, hoping the charm would work. She'd never been very good at charms, she hadn't been very good at much magic honestly. Sometimes she wondered how she'd ever gotten through Hogwarts. She had and that was what had mattered, now it was because of her past, because of her heritage she and Susan were in trouble.
Sahara wasn't sure how far she'd run when she heard it. The sound of apparation, the sound of screams, the sound of things being smashed, destroyed. The air smelled of smoke. With her heart pounding in her chest, Sahara picked up the pace, the wheels of the pram scraping the sidewalk.
Susan was too heavy to carry for long, otherwise Sahara would have ditched the pram to move faster. Finally, as the night sky started to overtake the light, Sahara found herself standing in front of a small manor house. The shuttered were a slate grey and the windows were closed. Sahara slipped the now sleeping Susan from the pram and walked up the steps slowly. She could feel wards around her giving, could feel them accepting her and her daughter. Safe. She was safe here, she knew that much. She raised a hand and knocked on the door. The door creaked open to reveal a woman with red hair and a worried expression on her face.
"Can I help you?" she asked.
"I hope so. I'm sorry, I had no idea where to go. I'm Sahara Bones, Jakob's wife? I asked my wand to point to his auntie's house, do I have the right place?"
The woman smiled slowly and Sahara felt her entire body fill with relief.
"I am Amelia Bones, I do have a nephew named Jakob who has a wife and daughter. In these uncertain times, though, can you give some proof as to your identities? The wards have decided you're not a threat at least. Did Jakob ever give you the password?"
Sahara paused, trying to remember everything Jakob had had her memorize. She knew the family history, but her mind was blanking on the password.
"Socks! Gween socks!" Susan exclaimed, waking up. "Daddy says password is gween socks!" she stated again. Sahara nodded.
"Green socks, right. Jakob did tell me to remember the green socks, I never knew what he meant, only to never forget."
"That was his favorite color as a child," Amelia commented, stepping aside to let Sahara and Susan in. "And also the password he had set up with the family. Please, come in, come in. I think I have some left over dinner if you're hungry," she added. Sahara nodded, following her inside.
"Amelia! Are you there?" a voice asked from the fire place. Sahara got Susan settled with some dinner while Amelia went to answer.
"Yes?"
"I'm sorry to tell you, your nephew's home, it was destroyed. They didn't find any survivors," the voice said. Sahara shuddered thinking about how close she and Susan had some to death. If she hadn't listened to the mirror...
"I've got them, John. They're safe here. Let the order know."
"Will do, also, the lost squad of aurors was located, in France. Your nephew is with them, beat up, but alive. Send his wife to St. Mungo's to see him, will you? He hasn't stopped asking for her and his daughter."
"I'll send them tomorrow. Everyone needs their rest tonight."
"Right."
Sahara smiled. Jakob was alive, they were all safe. Maybe, just maybe there was a chance they would survive this war, maybe?maybe there was a chance they would survive this war, maybe?
