Chapter 3

Sarah yawned as she got up from her bed and wondered over towards her window and opened her curtains. She half screwed her eyes as the light flooded into her room. Looks like we're getting new neighbours, Sarah thought to herself as she could see a removal van parked outside the house across the road that had been up for sale for a while now.

Jake wandered into Sarah room, "Yo dude do you have my iPod because I can't find it anywhere and you did borrow it the other day," Jake asked.

"Yeah it's over there," Sarah said pointing to her bedside cabinet.

"What you looking at?" Jake said as noticed Sarah was still looking out the window.

"It looks like we're getting new neighbours so I was just having a look to see what looked like," Sarah replied.

Jake walked over to the window and looked out as well, "Why do you want to see what they look like?" he asked.

"Well I don't I just wanted to see if they had like kids like are age or something and see if they looked cool. I mean I don't really want another posh stuck up family on the street that had nothing but bad things to say about us, we have enough of them already on this street," Sarah replied.

"Oh yeah I know what you mean," Jake replied.

"Well it doesn't look like we're going to see just now all I can see are guys carrying in boxes, sofas and furniture and whatever else," Sarah replied.

"Oh there you are Jake," Mike said as he came into Sarah's room, "Did you find your iPod?"

"Yeah Sarah had it," Jake replied.

"Oh cool well I was just away to say I searched the living room but it wasn't there and also my room but doesn't matter now," Mike said.

"Well thanks for looking anyway dude," Jake said.

"No problem," Mike smiled.

"It looks like we have new neighbours moving into the Smith's old place," Sarah said.

Mike looked out the window, "Oh yeah."

"So what are we doing today then?" Jake asked.

"Whatever I don't mind," Sarah said and Mike just shrugged his shoulders.

"Well you just want to stay at home until lunch then maybe do after that then," Jake suggested.

Sarah checked the time in her watch it was ten past ten, "Yeah whatever lunch won't be for at least another two hours anyway," Sarah said.

"Speaking about lunch I've not even had breakfast yet," Mike said.

"Same and I'm starving," Sarah said. They went downstairs to go get some breakfast.

"Morning mom," Sarah said as she walked into the kitchen.

"Morning Sarah, you're up then," Kate replied.

"Sure am," Sarah smiled. She got three bowls from the cupboard and then put some cereal in it and then got some milk from the fridge and poured it in to the three bowls.

"Thanks Sarah," Mike said as she handed him his bowl. The three of them went and sat with Henry, Nigel and Kyle at the table who were in the middle of eating there breakfast.

"You guys seen there is new people moving in across the street," Henry asked.

"Yeah we did," Mike replied.

"What is the big a deal about new people moving in across the street it's all I've heard since I got up this morning," Kim said as she sat down and ate her breakfast.

"Nothing I was just saying," Henry said.

"Where's Jessica?" Mike asked.

"Still upstairs I think," Kim replied as she put a spoonful of cereal into her mouth.

"You two use to be like joint at the hip, there was a time not that long ago when you would have never have came down for breakfast without Jessica," Mike stated.

"Yeah what happened between you two?" Henry asked.

"Nothing," Kim replied, "Just growing up and both becoming more independent and standing on our own two feet, we can't go on always relaying on each other."

"I suppose your right," Henry said.

Breakfast passed and everyone went off to do their own thing.

The doorbell rang and Tom went to answer, "Hello Jimmy!" Tom gasped, "what are you doing here," Tom said shocked to find Jimmy standing at his front door.

"Oh hey Tom just thought I'd come by for a visit," Jimmy replied.

"A visit?" Tom asked. Jimmy had never come to visit Tom before in his life and thought it was strange that he would come out of the blue when it was only a few days ago they last seen him while they were at the lake.

"Yeah there is nothing wrong with coming to visit a neighbour now is there?" Jimmy said.

"N, Ne ,Neighbour?" Tom startled.

"Yeah didn't you know we've moved in across the street Tom," Jimmy said pointing to his new house.

Tom's jaw dropped to the floor, "Why?"

"Why what?" Jimmy asked.

"Why did you move here? What brought you to Evanston?" Tom asked.

"Well I am opening up some offices of the Murtaugh businesses in Chicago so I knew I would be spending a lot of time here while I set them up so rather than be away from the family for so long I thought we would move here. Daniel is also away to study at university in Chicago and Calvin had just recently bought an apartment here because he moved here for work so it just made perfect sense," Jimmy said.

"But isn't that house very small for you I mean the house you have at the lake is like three or four times the size of that and the lake house is only your holiday home so I take it your other home must be huge too?" Tom asked.

"Yeah it was bigger than the house at the lake but after everything that happened this summer we decided to down size so it's more of a family home bring us closer together as a family, I mean I've seen how close all your kids are so it will hopefully make us stronger, "Jimmy said, "We've also got rid of all the maids and cooks so it will be much more of a family atmosphere."

"Oh you did now," Tom was baffled for words he was very surprised to find Jimmy on his doorstep and even more shocked to find out he was moving in across the street.

"What about school weren't all your kids enrolled in private schools were you moving them to?" Tom asked.

"Well this may surprise you but the kids just want to go to the local schools same as where you kids are and as I'm turning over a new page I agreed with them," Jimmy answered.

"Really?" Tom asked.

"Yeah took a bit of convincing but i eventually cmae round to the idea, but to make sure there not under achieving they will still have tutours after school, for one to two hours every night," Jimmy replied.

Tom just looked at Jimmy, "Is this a perminate move?" He asked.

"Don't know we'll see what happens," Jimmy replied.

"Ok do you want to come in?" Tom asked being polite.

"No it's fine I've got loads to do just thought I would come round and surprise you," Jimmy said.

"Well you didn't half surprise me," Tom laughed.

Tom wandered back into the house still very surprised to have found Jimmy Murtaugh at his door and even more surprised that he had moved in across the street.

"Who was that?" Kate asked.

"You'll never guess!" Tom said.

"Well who was it?" Kate asked again.

"Jimmy Murtaugh," Tom replied, "He has moved in across the street."

Kate was surprised.

Sarah, Jake and Mike walked in "Did you just say the Murtaugh's had moved in across the street?" Sarah asked.

"Yeah they have," Tom replied.

"What in the Smith's old place?" Jake asked.

"Isn't that a bit small for the Murtaugh's?" Mike also asked.

"Yeah the Smith's old place and yeah that's what I asked but Jimmy said he wanted to downsize to make it more of a family home," Tom replied, "He's even got rid of all his staff so it's just them."

"No way dude," Mike said.

"And they're going to the same school as you lot," Tom announced.

Sarah looked mortified, "this can't be happening," she said quietly so her mom and dad didn't hear.
