And scars, show me all the scars you hide

And hey, if your wings are broken

Please take mine so yours can open too

'Cause I'm gonna stand by you

Cause I'm gonna stand by you

Even if we're breaking down, we can find a way to break through

Even if we can't find Heaven, I'll walk through hell with you

She had been busy, with the funeral, burial and grieving over the loss of her husband. Meredith Grey had failed to notice that she was late.

She had been visiting the toilet around the clock the past few weeks but she chalked it up to losing Derek. But now as she sat on the floor in the bathroom of Grey Sloan, she realized just how wrong she had been.

Her vision was blurry, her hand shaking as she held the little white stick in her hand. She heard people coming in and exiting the bathroom but she couldn't move, she was frozen.

She stuffed the test into her scrub coat pocket before a new round of tears came. She was alone and pregnant.

The bathroom door opened, Alex walked in looking down at his pager. "Mer, there you are, half the hospital has been looking for you." She didn't know why but that made her cry harder. "Are you alright?" Alex asked her.

Meredith laughed bitterly, frantically wiping at her eyes. Alex got down on the floor next to her. "What's wrong?"

Meredith didn't speak as she pulled the test out of her pocket, handing it over to Alex. It took him a minute to realize what he was staring at.

"Yeah, everything is perfect. My husband is dead and now I'm carrying his baby. Just fucking perfect."

Alex sighed. "Mer," he paused. "Look at me." Meredith hesitated but eventually looked up at him. "It'll be okay."

"I can't do this alone, Alex." Meredith whimpered. She hated showing emotion but she didn't care. Not now.

"Well, it's a good thing you won't be." Alex smiled. Meredith smiled a small smile back as she took his hand into hers, squeezing it tightly. "Now let's get out of here before someone questions why I'm in the ladies room." Alex smirked

"I have to explain to Bailey why I haven't been answering my page." She sighed.

"I'll back you up, but before that. Let's go and get you an ultrasound. You've been under a lot of stress lately and I know some of the things you've been doing." He paused. "It wouldn't hurt to check."

Meredith smiled a little, reaching her hand out as Alex helped pull her up off the floor. They walked out of the bathroom, heading towards the elevator.

"Grey!" Meredith heard, stopping in her tracks. She turned around coming face and face with Miranda.

"Why haven't you been answering your pages? Was there something more important you needed to tend to?" Bailey asked, folding her arms.

"I-um..." Meredith started.

"I needed her for a consult." Alex chimed in. "We were on our way to get the test results." He smiled politely.

Miranda scanned the two, giving them a look of disapproval before walking away. Meredith and Alex looked at each other, chuckling softly.

"Come on," Alex whispered, starting to head toward the elevator.

"Okay, now that the paperwork is done, go ahead and change into this." Carina said, handing Meredith a paper gown. She changed into it, taking a seat on the table as she blew out a breath.

"Are you alright, Mer?" Alex asked.

"Huh? Yeah, I just--this is suddenly getting real. Although it should have been when the stick turned blue." She chuckled lightly.

Alex smiled softly, knowing this was a huge change for her. It was funny how everything had changed, there used to be five of them. All living different lives, not always getting along with each other but now it was just her and Alex. It was amazing to her how much he stepped up after Derek had died. She felt lucky to have him in her life.

"Ya know, you used to be one of the worst people I knew, Alex. Now you're one of the best." She smiled.

"Okay," Alex smiled. "Stop with the sappy stuff." Carina walked back in, clipboard in hand.

"Alright, go ahead and lay down and since you appear to be very early we will be doing a trans vaginal ultrasound." Meredith watched as Carina prepared everything, holding her breath as Alex took her hand into his.

"Okay, just relax as much as you can, Meredith." Carina whispered, getting situated between the blondes legs. "I'm gonna have you take a deep breath and blow it out, okay?" Meredith complied, wincing a bit as Carina slid the transducer inside of her.

Meredith closed her eyes, focusing on her breathing for a few minutes before Carina spoke again. "Alright mommy, you're definitely pregnant." She turned the screen towards them as Meredith opened her eyes. "Right there is the sack," Carina pointed out. "And that little tiny dot right there is your baby. It's too early to hear the heartbeat but everything looks great and the next time you come in, we will be able to hear." Carina smiled.

Meredith laid there, stray tears falling from her eyes as she stared at the screen. This was her baby. "Hi there," she whispered softly.

She was scared, more like downright petrified. She didn't know anything about being a mother and if her own mother had taught her anything, it was how not to be a mother. But she still wasn't sure if she could do this.

Alex could see Meredith visibly shaking. He reached over, pushing the hair away from her face gently.

"Are you alright?" He asked her.

"Yeah, I will be." She whispered, returning her eyes to the screen.

As long as she had her best friend with her, she would be okay. Or she hoped, at least.
