Chapter 4
Sarah, Jake and Mike were in the living room watching TV. Sarah still couldn't believe that the Murtaugh's had moved in across the street. She had been looking forward to getting away from Elliot while they were at the lake and now he was here and was going to be going to the same school as her.
Henry, Mark, Kim and Jessica arrived home.
"Guys you'll never guess who had moved in across the street," Jake said as they took their shoes off and left them sitting in front of the door.
"Who?" Kim asked.
"The Murtaugh's," Mike announced.
Jessica's face light up.
"You being serious?" Henry asked.
"Yeah dude," Jake asked.
"They all over their just now?" Jessica asked.
"Just Jimmy they rest are coming at some point tonight," Mike replied.
"I'm so excited to see them," Jessica smiled. Sarah knew exactly why Jessica was so excited to see them well Eliot anyway. Sarah had no idea what she would do if Jessica and Elliot got together.
"How long are they here for?" Mark asked.
"They don't know they're just going to wait and see how things go," Sarah replied.
"And they are going to our school too," Mike said.
"Oh cool," Mark said. He was looking forward to having Kenneth around and thought it would be cool if they were in the same class.
It was later that night and Sarah was in her room clearing things up. She heard a car drive up the street and it sounded like it had stopped. She walked over to her window and moved the curtain and looked out.
It was dark now and it was nearly eleven at night. The car had stopped outside the Murtauhg's new house. The street light was shining off the car so Sarah could see what was going on. First Selena got out and then Lisa, Robin and Becky got the out the car, next Elliot got out. Sarah watched him as he opened the boot and took out a bag, he looked up at the Murtaugh's new house and turned around and looked around the neighbourhood.
He looked over towards the Baker's house and seen Sarah, their eyes made contact and Sarah quickly moved her head away and let go of the curtain so she couldn't see out the window. Elliot also looked away and then looked back with the corner of his eye and noticed that Sarah had gone.
Sarah knew that she should probably go tell everyone else that the Murtaugh's were here now but she didn't because she knew her dad would have them all over there to say hello. She knew she would have to eventually but thought it could wait until tomorrow rather than tonight.
Sarah put her light off and got in to her bed and went on her laptop. Someone knocked on her door.
"Come in," She said.
"Hey," Jake said as he came into Sarah's room.
Sarah smiled at him.
"The Murtaugh's are here now you know?" Jake said.
"Yeah I noticed. Does everyone else know?" Sarah asked.
"Not that I know of," Jake replied.
"Don't tell anyone please because dad will have us over there," Sarah said.
"Oh I won't. How do you feel about Elliot moving in across the street?" Jake asked as he walked over towards Sarah's bed and sat on the edge of it.
Sarah sighed, "I don't even think it's sunk it yet, that Elliot is now living across the street and going to be going to school with us. I'm going to see him every day now," Sarah said.
Jake just looked at Sarah and didn't say anything.
"What about you how do you feel about it?" Sarah asked Jake.
"I'm not too sure, mixed feelings I suppose. In a way I am happy that Elliot's here because after all I did give our friendship another try but at the same time I don't want him living so close. I liked the fact that I didn't always have to see him and then there is you and I if he's going to make your life hard then I prefer he wasn't here," Jake answered.
"After time things could be ok maybe," Sarah said hoping, "I mean he was one of my best friends before."
"Yeah mine too I'm just gutted about the way things ended up," Jake added.
Sarah turned off her laptop and placed it on her desk. She laid her head on her pillow and continued to talk to Jake. It was now nearly three in the morning and Jake and Sarah were still talking and it wasn't long until they both ended up falling asleep, Sarah was on her bed and Jake had his top half of his body on Sarah's bean bag and his legs on the floor.
Morning came and the sun was shining through the curtains in Sarah's room, lighting her whole room up. Jake screwed his eyes as the light flooded in and he began to wake up. He stretched before sitting up on the bean bag. He picked up one of Sarah's cushions which were on the floor and threw them off Sarah until she woke up.
"Jake!" She moaned as she was woken up.
Jake laughed, "Sorry but it had to be done dude".
"What time is it anyway?" Sarah asked.
"Ten," Jake replied.
They went downstairs and sat in the living room watching TV with Henry and Mike.
"Come on kids need to get ready you're not sitting around all day in your PJ's watching TV," Kate said as she opened the curtains in the living room.
"Mom," Henry complained as the light entered the living room.
"Come on, go get yourselves ready," Kate said as she picked up the remote control and turned the TV off.
"Mom we were watching that!" Sarah shouted.
"Well you're not anymore," Kate said as she folded her arms.
"But mom,"
"But mom nothing," Kate said ending the conversation.
Sarah went to speak again but didn't see the point in trying. They all wandered back upstairs to go get ready.
"You know what this means?" Sarah said to Jake as they walked up the stairs.
"What?" he asked.
"We're away to go over and see the Murtaugh's once we're all dressed and ready," Sarah replied.
"Well me and you will just take ages and hold everyone else up," Jake replied.
"Yeah," Sarah giggled.
"See you soon then," Jake said as they both went into their own rooms.
"Yeah," Sarah agreed.
Sarah was nearly ready and only had her hair left to do. She stepped over towards her chest of drawers by the window to get her hair bush. She gazed out the window over to the Murtaugh's new house. She could see someone walking about in the living room but couldn't tell who it was but whoever it was seemed to have noticed her and came closer towards the window.
"Crap," Sarah said as she jumped back from the window, 'Now whoever that was thinks I was spying on them, well that's just great' she thought to herself.
She went over to her mirror and did her hair. It was a lot longer now than it was two years ago at the lake; it was now like half way down her back and had some lighter colourer highlights through it. She tied it in two loess pony tails, and stuck on a hoodie before standing back from the mirror to see a whole body view of herself.
"Oh it'll do," she sighed before leaving her room.
"Sarah you coming downstairs?" Mike asked.
"Yeah ok," she said.
"We're going over to see the Murtaugh's soon, once dad gets back," Mike said.
"Where is dad?" Sarah asked as they sat down outside on the wall out the front of the house, since it was a nice day.
"Oh he got called away this morning some important meeting at his work or something like that," Mike replied.
"Ok," Sarah said.
They were sitting outside their house on the wall which was in perfect view of the Murtaugh's house, "You know they probably think we're sitting here like spying on them or something," Sarah said.
"No they won't. Why would they? Plus we always sit here," Mike replied.
"Yeah but they don't know that we always sit here and well they probably wouldn't think we were spying on them if it weren't for the fact that I was looking out my window earlier and one of them seen me and I'm sure they think I was spying on them," Sarah said.
"Who was it?" Mike asked.
"I don't know I never seen they're face," Sarah replied.
"Oh well who gives two cares in the world if they think we're spying on them, they can think what they want," Mike said.
"Yeah you're right," Sarah smiled.
Tom's car drove up the drive way.
"Oh great this means we're away to go see the Murtaugh's now," Sarah sighed, "I mean they're so desperate to see us they haven't even bothered to come over to see us, when we live across the road," Sarah said sarcastically.
"Yeah that's a good point actually," Mike agreed.
"Hey you two," Tom said as he got out the car.
"Hey dad," They both replied.
"How's everyone today then?" Tom asked.
"Good," Sarah replied as Tom went inside.
"Where's Jake?" Sarah asked.
"I dunno he was in his room earlier," Mike replied.
"Oh well, he's probably getting ready or something," Sarah said.
"Sarah, Mike, dad wants you in the kitchen," a voice shouted from inside.
"I wander what he wants," Sarah said as the two of them got up from the wall they were sitting on and walked inside.
Everyone else was in the kitchen including Jake and were all standing around waiting for Sarah and Mike.
"Why are we all in here," Mike asked as him and Sarah walked in.
"Your dad wants to speak to you all," Kate answered.
"Yeah, but why in the kitchen?" Kim asked.
"Because I was sitting in here when I called you all through ok?" Tom said ending the conversation as to why they were all in the kitchen.
"Ok".
"Right as you all now know the Murtaugh's have moved in across the street."
Sarah rolled her eyes, "Oh here we go," She whispered to Mike.
"So I just wanted to let you all know that I'm not going to have no stupid competition or rivalry with Jimmy now that he lives across the street. So we will get along with them like any of our other neighbours and friends ok? You all got that?" Tom said.
"Em yeah but why are you telling us this because I think the only one you're trying to kid is yourself," Jessica said.
"Yeah because there is no way you can say there will be no rivalry between you and Jimmy because we all know it's going to be ten times worse now that he lives across the street," Kim continued.
"And the rivalry is just going to get worse because your now going to compete over who had the best garden who had the cleanest house and how well we all behave at school because if they are going to be going to our school they're going to know how we behave and well obviously they are all going to be little angles dad," Henry added.
"Kids listen I can assure you none of that will happen," Tom said.
"Yeah let's just wait and see who's right then," Mark said.
Tom was starting to think he might be proved wrong by his kids because he knew if Jimmy started it off this time he wouldn't be able to help himself from getting involved.
"That's all for now kids," Tom said, "Oh wait I thought we could go over and pay them visit since and welcome them to the neighbourhood".
"Oh great," Sarah sighed.
"Yeah so we'll probably go over just after lunch," Tom said.
All the kids left the kitchen and it was only Kate and Tom left.
"Kate the kids are right," Tom said, "it is going to turn into some kind of big competition and I'm just going to turn into a jerk and all the kids are going to fall out with me again."
"Tom you've just got to not let that happen," Kate said.
"I know but I don't know if I'll be able to help myself I might just get drawn into it Kate," Tom said.
"Well Tom you're just going to have to be able to stop yourself from getting drawn into it," Kate said.
