Chapter 5
All the Baker kids were at the dinner table having lunch and after that they were going round to see the Murtaugh's.
"Jessica can you pass the ketchup?" Kim asked, "Jess, Jessica!"
"Oh sorry what?" Jessica said. She was away in a dream and didn't hear her sister calling her.
"Could you pass the ketchup?" Kim repeated.
"Oh yeah sorry," Jessica said as she passed Kim the ketchup. Jessica's mind wasn't with it. She was thinking about Elliot, she hadn't heard anything from him since she left the lake and knew things were going to be so complicated now. Part of her was ecstatic that Elliot was here, as finally her dream could come true the two of them could get together, but the other side of her thought that the holiday romance may not work in reality and things would be different now that things were back to normal and at school. Plus there would be loads of other girls at school and with Elliot's good looks he'd have all the girls falling at his feet and then there was Sarah and things would just get more complicated.
Sarah was also worrying about seeing Elliot and Elliot living across the street and going to school with him. Her mind was telling her loads of different things about how things might happen; her brain was almost in overload.
"Kids you all finished your lunch?" Tom asked.
Everyone answered that they had.
"Ok so you better all go get ready because we're going over to see the Murtaugh's in five minutes," Tom said.
Everyone left the table to get there stuff together and met in the living room five minutes later. Everyone was there and ready to go except for Jessica she was still upstairs.
"Aw Hurry up Jessica!" Tom sighed as he was bored from waiting on Jessica already.
Jessica was trying her best to look good in front of Elliot but didn't want to try too hard because everyone else would notice she was looking better than usual and comment on it and soon realise that it was all for Elliot.
"About time Jess," Henry said as Jessica walked down the stairs.
"Sorry, I spilt my juice everywhere and had to clean it up," Jessica lied.
"Oh well it doesn't matter let's just get going," Tom said as he walked towards the front door.
They walked across the street in a big line towards the Murtaugh's new house.
Kyle and Nigel raced each other to the front door as they wanted to ring the doorbell. Kyle pulled Nigel out the way and got to the door and rung the bell.
"Dad that's not fair he tugged me down," Nigel complained.
Tom shook his head.
Sarah looked the house up and down, "Never did I think I would be standing outside this house across the street from ours to go in and see the Murtaugh's."
"Neither did any of us," Jake said. They all waited patiently until Jimmy came to the door.
"Hi, great you see you all, Neighbours," Jimmy said as he opened the door.
"Hey how you doing? Settling in ok?" Tom said.
"I'm fine and yeah we're settling in just fine," Jimmy replied, "Come on in."
"That still hasn't quite sunk in yet, the whole hey there neighbour approach," Tom said to Kate as they went inside.
"Oh it will eventually," Kate said.
"Just go through and sit in the living room," Jimmy said as he led them through to the living room. The living room had one large corner sofa in the corner of the room and two other sofas, one beside the window which looked out onto the street and the other against the wall, opposite the corner sofa. There was a large cabinet in the middle of the room which was full of trophy's but it was still a lot smaller than the one they had at the lake, since the house wasn't as big they had decided to get a smaller one and only display some of their many trophies and awards. There was a huge seventy inch HD TV on the wall which drew in the most attention in the room.
"Cool TV, Mr Murtaugh," Henry said.
"Oh thanks we just bought it the other day. We were going to get a bigger one but since we've gone for a smaller house, we thought a bigger TV might look a little silly and would be too big for the room so we went for a smaller option," Jimmy said.
Tom just started at the TV, it was obvious already that he was jealous of the TV and was sick of Jimmy boasting about it.
"I'll just go call on the kids there all busy studying, want them to be ahead of the game when school starts on Monday," Jimmy said.
"I still can't believe he makes them do school work during the summer. I've not even touched a school book since summer started," Mike said.
"Me neither," Sarah agreed.
"Kids come on down the Baker's are here to see us!" Jimmy shouted.
"Hiya great to see you all," Serena said as she walked in.
"Hi," Kate said.
"Sorry I wasn't here to welcome you in, I was trying to get my head round how to work the washing machine because since we no longer have our maids we have to do all the house work now and it's all new to me," Serena said.
"Oh I'm sure you'll get your head round it, it's not that hard really," Kate said, having years of experience.
"So why did you get rid of your maids?" Tom asked.
"Oh it was because we wanted a more family like home to strengthen the family so we downsized and got rid of our cooks and maids, make it more like your average family home," Serena said.
"Oh I see," Tom replied.
Footsteps could be heard coming down the stairs, and the Murtaugh kids walked through except for Ann and Calvin since they were older and moved out.
Everyone was saying hello to each other and catching up.
"Sup dude," Elliot said to Jake.
"Sup," Jake said, "This is so strange you now living across the street."
"I know right," Elliot said.
Sarah and Mike were standing about a meter away from Elliot and Jake talking.
"Oh this is awkward he's like right next to me," Sarah whispered.
"Just speak to him and show him that you're over him and ready to just be friends," Mike suggested.
"Yeah you're right," Sarah said.
Sarah and Mike slowly shifted closer towards Jake and Elliot.
"Hiya Elliot," Sarah said, trying to sound cheerful and show him she was over him like Mike said.
"Hey," Elliot replied, "How's things?" he asked.
"Oh good, what about you?" Sarah asked.
"There fine," Elliot said.
"Yo dude how you doing?" Elliot said to Mike.
"I'm good?" Mike replied.
"Good good then," Elliot replied.
"So you liking it here then?" Sarah asked.
"Yeah it's pretty cool, well has been so far, but to be honest I haven't seen much more than our house so far so not sure what it's like as a whole," Elliot replied.
"Oh well we'll show you about and let you see what there is to do around here," Jake said.
"Cool that would be good thanks," Elliot smiled.
"No problem," Jake said, "How about tomorrow that ok with you?"
"Err yeah it should be I'll text you tomorrow to let you know because I'll need to speak to my dad first," Elliot answered.
"Ok that's cool dude. You two coming?" Jake asked Sarah and Mike.
"Maybe I'll wait and see," Mike replied, "I was maybe going to be meeting up with some of my mates."
"Yeah same I might be doing other things so I'll wait and see too," Sarah said even though she knew she wasn't doing anything yet.
Jessica was speaking to Becky but kept glancing over to Eliot. She was rather annoyed because he hadn't even come over to say hello yet and hadn't even acknowledged her. She really couldn't understand Elliot, she was his best friend when nobody else was there but the second he was with a group of people he just didn't take no notice of her.
She sat on the end of the sofa still talking to Becky. Becky was telling her some story but she wasn't listening she was still looking at Elliot and trying to understand why he was acting like this.
"Aww," Jessica sighed and shook her head.
"What's up? Am I boring you?" Becky asked.
"Oh no just something is really bothering me at the moment but I really don't want to explain it just now," Jessica answered.
"Ok well as long as you're ok but if you ever want to talk you know where I am," Becky replied.
"Oh thanks that really nice of you Becky," Jessica smiled.
"Right kids we better get going now, The Murtaugh's have to get on with their studying," Tom announced.
"Oh do we have to dad," Kyle asked.
"Yes we do because the Murtaugh's have stuff to do," Tom replied.
"Well rather you than me who had studies to do," Jake said to Elliot.
"Yeah I know how can you be assed?" Sarah asked.
"I dunno, it's just normal for us we've done it since like forever," Elliot laughed.
"Ok well text me tomorrow if you still want me to show you about," Jake said.
"I will," Elliot said.
"Later dude," Jake said.
"Later," Elliot replied.
"Bye," Sarah said.
The Baker's walked across the street back to their house.
"Oh sometimes I really can't stand that man," Tom said about Jimmy, "I mean did you hear him going on about how he went for a smaller TV as the any bigger would have been too big for the room since he's now downsized on the house, because you know something I worked really hard to get to where I am in live and I'm pleased we've got a this house which is big enough for all the kids to have their own room and plenty of space. This is a big house to me and to him it's a tiny downsized house."
"Tom honey calm down," Kate interrupted.
"Oh sorry but he just winds me up so much sometimes. And why oh why did he have to move in across the street," Tom continued.
"Tom," Kate said as she crossed her arms.
"Sorry, I'm finished now," Tom said.
Jessica stormed off to her room and locked the door. She now had her own room now since Charlie and Lorraine had moved out and since her and Kim was getting older they thought it was a good idea to get their own rooms. Nigel and Kyle still shared as they were younger.
Jessica sat at her desk which was by the window and looked out to the street and over towards the Murtaugh's place. Elliot appeared at one of the windows upstairs and Jessica guessed that it was Elliot's room. He was looking out across the street and then disappeared again.
"Urrrgg, why is he doing this," Jessica complained to herself.
She picked up her phone and selected create a new message and then selected Elliot's name and then thought of what to say, she started to type the message now,
Hi Elliot, it's Jess
Just thought I'd text to see if you're liking your new home
And since we never spoke earlier thought we could have a catch up soon, xx
Jessica sat her phone down on her bed waiting to see if he would reply. Half an hour passed and Elliot still hadn't replied and Jessica kept checking her sent items in case the message hadn't sent but it had. Maybe he had a new number or his phone had died or he just hadn't checked it Jessica thought to herself or maybe he just didn't have any credit.
Jessica finally gave up on waiting for a reply because it didn't look like she was getting one.
