Just fight a little longer my friend

It's all worth it in the end

But when you got nobody to turn to

Just hold on, and I'll find you

I'll find you

Penny smiled at her, whispered a thank you before heading back to the room where Meredith and the patient were. She opened the door, dropping the bag as her eyes widened.

"What the hell?" She whispered before she ran out of the room. "I need some help in here, right now!"

Penny ran back into the room, everyone trailing behind her. They all couldn't help but stand there in shock for a moment at the scene before them.

"Um, Jackson, you take the patient out of this damn room and restrain him." Richard ordered, venom lacing in his voice. "And someone grab me a backboard!"

April came back with a board, handing it over to Richard. "Okay, April, hold her still while I slide this under her, be very careful not to jostle her." He ordered, a hint of sadness in his voice. He considered Meredith as a daughter and seeing her in this state was breaking his heart.

"Okay, on three." Miranda instructed. "One, two, three." She counted down before sliding Meredith onto the board. The scream that erupted from Meredith as her eyes shot open made them all cringe. They transferred her to the bed, April placing a neck brace around the blonde's neck.

"Decreased breath sounds on the left." April said, looking up at the monitor. "Her pulse ox is down to eighty-eight percent."

"Hook up the monitors for a trauma series." Richard said before shaking his head. "How the hell did this happen?"

"The guy was stable, I wasn't supposed to be gone all of five minutes but I got pulled into another room." Penny whispered, regretfully.

Meanwhile...

Callie ran through the hospital in search of Alex. She searched every hospital room and on-call room before eventually finding him in the NICU. her eyes were full of tears as she stepped inside.

"Alex," she whispered tearfully.

"Hey how are...what's wrong?" Alex asked, noticing the tears streaming down Callie's face.

"You need to come, now." Callie gasped. "It's Meredith. It's really bad."

Alex's eyes widened and he took off following Callie.

"Her vein's collapsed," April sighed, frustrated. They were running out of time and everyone knew it.

"Okay, set her up for a central line." Owen said. Meredith's eyes were darting all over, unable to move, unable to speak.

"Okay, Grey, we're going to shoot an x-ray, just stay calm." Owen whispered. He took the board, sliding it under her as Meredith released another scream. "Okay, easy, calm down." Owen whispered. Everything was fast paced around her, scaring her out of her mind.

"Okay, Meredith, your lung is collapsing, we're going to have to put in a chest tube, alright?" Maggie said as she pulled on a new set of gloves. The door swung over, Alex ran to Meredith's side taking her hand into his. Tears streaming down his cheeks.

"Mer, it's ok. Everything's gonna be alright. We're all right here," he whispered tearfully. "What the hell happened?" He shouted.

"She was attacked by a patient." Richard said regretfully.

"Whose bright idea was it to leave her alone with a patient?" Alex said through gritted teeth.

Everyone remained silent for a moment before Richard spoke up, moving over to Maggie.

"Maggie, you can't work on your family." He whispered.

"Everyone in this damn room is her family!" Alex shouted, a new round of tears streaming steadily down his cheeks. Everyone remained silent as Maggie started the chest tube. Alex felt physically ill watching as Meredith let out a gasp lapsing into a heavy coughing.

"Breathe, Mer," Alex whispered, stroking her hair. "The chest tube is in. It's over." Meredith slowly took her hand out of Alex's hand and ran it towards her stomach, Alex looked into her eyes and no words needed to be said. He knew what she was asking.

"I'll check on the baby, Mer." He turned towards the group. "I need a fetal monitor."

"Fetal monitor, Karev?" Amelia said. No one had noticed she had come in. "We only use that if the patient is pregnant." She pointed out. Alex stayed quiet.

"How far along?" Owen asked.

"Eight weeks," Alex responded as April handed a monitor over to him. "Alright, everyone quiet, please." It took a few minutes before the sweet sound of a heartbeat filled the room making everyone sigh in relief. Alex smiled up at Meredith.

"Hear that? Everything's fine." Alex smiled before it faded. Meredith wasn't smiling. Something wasn't right, he knew Meredith would normally be overjoyed to know that the baby was alright but all she had was a blank expression. "Mer? Are you alright?"

Alex turned around, confused. "I don't think she can hear anything." April stepped around, checking Meredith over, gently sighing.

"Barotrauma, possibly from the blows. Karev is right, she can't hear us," April whispered. "And her jaw is locked, possibly fractured." She said, trying to open Meredith's mouth gently.

"Okay, we're going to need to get in there to place a tube to preserve her airway." Richard said, knowing they were about to cause Meredith excruciating pain.

"Okay, I'm so sorry, Meredith." April whispered.

"Isn't there another way?" Alex asked.

"You and I both know there isn't, I'm sorry, Alex." April sighed sadly. "Okay, here we go."

Alex hovered over Meredith as April worked to release her jaw. Only when they heard a crack and a gut wrenching scream from Meredith that was enough to bring them all to tears did they know it was successful.

"Okay, is there an O.R. available yet?" Richard asked.

"Yes, O.R. One is prepped and ready." Maggie said.

"Alright, let's get her moved." Alex held onto her hand until the very last second, not wanting to let her go. He was left alone in the room. He stood there, looking at all the blood that covered the floor, not wanting to imagine what had happened, what she had gone through.

"Alex," Callie whispered, coming back into the room. "Are you okay?" She reached over, gently rubbing his back.

"She better not die, I swear to God." Alex whispered, his voice trembling.

"Hey, she's gonna be okay. She's strong and she's going to fight for her life. For that baby." Callie said. "Everyone is doing everything they can and you know Meredith won't give up that easily. It's gonna be okay."

"She's my best friend, Callie. I'm supposed to protect her." Alex whispered tearfully.

"You can't always protect her, Alex. Life throws us curveballs all the time and we just have to get through it." Callie sighed. "I have to get to the O.R. since they are going to need an Ortho God." She patted him on the back before starting to walk out. He stopped her, grabbing her arm as she turned around, pulling her into a hug.

"She's gonna be alright." Callie whispered.

"I really fricken hope so." He whispered back, praying that Meredith would pull through.
