Everything was sore as Meredith awoke. Slowly she opened her eyes, scanning the hospital room that was packed with her co workers. She watched as everyone's lips were moving, trying to make out what they were saying.

She tried to open her mouth, to tell them she couldn't hear or to even tell them anything but it wasn't working. She slowly moved her hand up towards her mouth feeling the metal wire. Her eyes flickered towards Alex as he reached over, gently bringing her hand down from her mouth. He gave her a small smile, grabbing a whiteboard off the table, handing it over to Meredith.

Meredith took the marker, scribbling something down quickly before turning it around.

"Everything okay?" Alex read out loud before reaching for the whiteboard. It was a daunting way of communicating but it was the only way they could.

"Yes, you have a lot of injuries but the surgery went well." Alex wrote, adding a smiley face at the end. She took the whiteboard back, writing something down and Alex could have already guessed what her next question would be.

"Is my baby okay?" Alex read. He smiled softly before reaching for the whiteboard.

"Yes, you're both okay." He wrote down, handing the board back to Meredith.

"Okay, let me get in here," Miranda said, removing the stethoscope from around her neck. She took a few minutes, checking Meredith over before offering a smile trying to let her know everything was alright before leaving the room. Amelia came over from her place against the wall, wanting to wait until Bailey was done to talk to Meredith. She walked over to the bed, a look of hurt and anger written across her face.

Alex saw her expression and wrote on the whiteboard, "I'm gonna let you two talk." Then he left the room.

"When were you going to tell me?" Amelia wrote.

Meredith grabbed the whiteboard out of her hand. "I wasn't going to tell anyone for a while, you don't understand."

"I think I'm entitled to know you're carrying my brother's child, assuming that it's his." Amelia wrote back.

"Of course this baby is Derek's. You really think I would sleep with someone else? You think I'm a whore?" Meredith wrote back, hurt written all over her face.

"I'm just asking." She turned the whiteboard around, wiping it clean before scribbling something else down. "What are you going to do with the baby?"

Meredith rolled her eyes before grabbing the whiteboard back. "Of course I'm keeping it."

Amelia left a few minutes later, watching as Alex sat back down next to Meredith.

Everyone came in and out of her room and Meredith wished she could have an actual conversation with them. All she could do is watch the clock, watching as the hours ticked by. She was sitting up in bed, thinking about how much her life had changed, and not for the better. The only good that came out of any of this was that her baby was still alive.

She couldn't hear and she couldn't talk. Everyone had been extremely patient with her but she couldn't help wish they could just keep her sedated until this nightmare was over with.

April walked in, taking a seat on the bed as she blew out a breath. "Do you know sign language?" April signed.

"Yes." Meredith signed back. She had taught herself sign language on the side in high school.

"I'm glad you're alright," April signed, giving Meredith a small smile. "And congratulations on the baby."

"Thank you, I'm glad we both made it through. I just hope I get my hearing back, too." Meredith signed.

"Can I let you in on a little secret? Don't tell Jackson yet but I'm pregnant, too." April signed, trying not to let her emotions get the best of her.

"Congratulations, how far along?"

"Four weeks." A nurse came into the room, quickly switching out Meredith's bag of TPN to a fresh one, giving her a smile before leaving the room. Alex tapped her on the shoulder, showing her the whiteboard to let her know he was going to grab something to eat while Meredith talked to April.

They both watched as Alex left the room before April signed again. "Don't ever scare us like that again, I was afraid you weren't going to make it off the table."

"I didn't think I was going make it to the O.R. Guess we were both surpised." She paused. "When are you going to tell Jackson?"

"Soon, just not yet. When were you going to tell us? I kinda figured it out, i was just waiting until you confirmed it." April smiled.

"It's not that simple this time around. Derek is dead and then I found out I was pregnant. How does one even begin to comprehend that?"

"I know it's hard and I have to ask. What is going on with you and Alex?"

"Just friends, nothing more. He's my best friend, my person. He's really stepped up especially after Derek died and I can't be more proud of the man he's become."

"Well if you ever need a woman to talk to, you know I'm here." April gave her a small smile. She got up heading out of the room.

Meredith reached over, grabbing the call light before turning the TV on. She turned the closed captioning on so at least she would get an idea of what was going on. Alex came back in a little while later, picking the white board back up.

"Sorry I ate in the cafeteria, didn't want to tempt you." He showed her the board before setting it back down, taking his seat back next to her. She reached out grabbing his hand as they both sat there in silence. Meredith didn't know what the future had in store for her but she just hoped she could catch a break soon.
