-The next night-

She had a plan, a well executed plan. At least she thought it was, as long as she didn't get caught. Jo stood outside of Meredith's hospital room, dressed in all black with a hood pulled up over her head.

"This is going to be so easy," she whispered excitedly. "Just in and out." She whispered. She knew Alex had gone home per someone's orders to go home and get some sleep. She walked into the hospital room, closing the blinds before heading over to the bed. She worked slowly as to not wake Meredith as she decannulated the I.V. and attached the syringe. She smiled, watching as she pushed the medication into Meredith's line.

The sound of the heart monitor started going off so she quickly reached over to turn it off unaware that it was still going off at the main desk. She reconnected the I.V. and shoved the syringe into her pocket before quickly exiting the room.

Bailey arrived a few seconds later, followed by April.

"Why is she flatlining?" Miranda asked, confused and panicked. "Okay, charge to 200!" She shouted, grabbing the paddles.

"Clear!" She shouted before shocking Meredith, to no avail.

Alex sat by her bed, mentally kicking himself. Miranda had told him to go home and the one time he did, Meredith ended up hurt.

He looked up at the monitor, watching as her heartbeat floated across the screen. It had taken a few minutes but they were able to bring her back. Every test was run after that and it turned out Meredith had been drugged with a high dose of Ephedrine that stops the heart.

Alex sighed, reaching over to take Meredith's hand into his. It was a waiting game to see if she had any permanent damage from the attempted murder. "Mer," Alex whispered. "You have to pull through this. You made it this far." He paused. "By some miracle your baby made it, too. We don't know if there was any damage done and we won't know for a while but he or she survived, Meredith. Now it's all up to you."

Alex couldn't think of who would have done this, who would have wanted his best friend dead. He couldn't think in general, he was exhausted from all the crying he had done. Nothing was making sense to him. Meredith was a strong woman, probably the strongest woman he had ever met and he didn't understand why she couldn't catch a break. It seemed that disaster and tragedy followed wherever she went like a swarm of bees to honey. She couldn't get away from it.

His phone vibrated in his pocket, making him sigh in frustration. Jo had been calling him nonstop and he didn't have the energy to fight with her. He quickly pulled his cell phone out of his pocket, sending the call to voicemail.

"How is she doing?" Callie asked softly, walking into the room. "I was on my way home but wanted to stop by and see how she was doing."

"She's stable, the baby seems fine and now it's just a waiting game." Alex sighed.

"Did they figure out who did this?" Callie asked.

"No, they reviewed the surveillance footage from outside the room but whoever it was, was wearing all black and never showed their face."

"Whoever did this needs to pay." Callie sighed angrily. "Meredith needs a damn break already."

Alex laughed softly. "No kidding, she's been through enough." Callie took a seat, placing her hand on Alex's arm. No one said anything, the silence of the hospital room bringing a sort of peace, especially since they knew Meredith was okay.

"Alex, why don't you go and get a cup of coffee or something? I'll stay here with Meredith." Callie offered. Alex sat quiet for a moment before replying.

"Actually, I need to go home and grab some clothes. Can you stay with her until I get back? I won't be long but I don't want her left alone even for a minute." Alex said firmly, dreading leaving Meredith again.

"I promise, I won't leave her alone. Scouts honor." Callie smiled.

Walking up the stairs to his apartment he prayed that Jo was asleep. He wanted to just grab his stuff and get back to the hospital as quickly as possible. He pulled a duffle bag out of the closet, stuffing clothes into it.

"Where's my phone charger?" He muttered, looking around. He grabbed Jo's purse off of the floor, thinking maybe she was hiding it. He started pulling everything out of it, placing the items on the dining table.

"What the hell?" He whispered as he pulled a syringe out of the bag. He stared at it confused as he reached back into the bag pulling out a vial. He tried to read the label but the room was too dark so he walked into the bathroom, shutting the door behind him as he flipped the light on.

When he could finally read the label in the light, he gasped. "This can't be right." He whispered even though the evidence was staring him right in the face. This was the same drug that Meredith had been poisoned with. He didn't want to believe that Jo had the capability of hurting his best friend. He put the items in his pocket heading back to the hospital.

He walked back into the hospital room, seeing Callie playing a game on her phone. His eyes flickered between Meredith and Callie, his whole body shaking.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Callie asked, seeing Alex shaking.

Alex said nothing as he handed Callie the syringe and vial from inside his pocket. "I found these in Jo's purse when I went home. I was looking for something when they fell out of her bag." He finally said.

"You don't think—" Callie started.

"That Jo was the one that did this? Yeah, that's exactly what I'm thinking," Alex growled. "I'm gonna go talk to Bailey and then take these to security, I'll be right back." Alex whispered, taking the syringe and vial out of Callie's hand. He left the room, hoping and praying that somehow he was wrong.
