Chapter 13
Sarah walked over towards the movies to go meet Ethan. She was feeling a little nervous as this was her first date since Elliot and she didn't really know much about Ethan. She checked how she looked in the reflection of the cars parked outside the movies as she approached Ethan.
"Hey," he said.
"Hi," Sarah smiled.
"You look really pretty," Ethan complimented.
"Thanks," Sarah blushed.
"I got our tickets, so we can go get popcorn and juice now if you want?" Ethan suggested.
"Yeah that sounds good," Sarah replied.
After getting their food they sat in the movie theatre watching the film. Sarah was glad that it was the movies that they were at and not a meal or anything because she was finding it really awkward to make conversation, and at least the movie being on meant they just had to sit and watch it and not make conversation.
Ethan yawned and put his arm round Sarah which just made her remember her first date with Elliot to the movies because he did that to her as well, and then she couldn't help but smirk to herself as she remembered how her dad and Jimmy had been spying on them, and her dad ended up hanging by his feet. Sarah had been pretty mad at the time but she could see the funny side of it now.
The movie had finished and Ethan walked Sarah home which was about a half an hour walk.
"So where was it you lived before you moved here?" Sarah asked making conversation.
"New York" he replied, "It's so busy though".
"I use to live in midland, it's was really quite where we lived, I miss it sometimes but yeah that's like the opposite from New York," Sarah said.
"So how long you lived here for then?" Ethan asked.
"About three years now. We all hated it at first but as time went on we learned to like it, we got in a lot of trouble when we first got here," Sarah laughed.
"Yeah I like it here, everyone is really nice," Ethan replied.
They had arrived at the Baker's house and Ethan walked Sarah up to the door.
"I had a really good time with you tonight," Ethan said.
"Yeah me too," Sarah smiled.
Ethan went in for a kiss as he said goodbye but Sarah turned her head and he kissed her on the cheek instead. She was going to kiss him but pulled out at the last second as she hadn't kissed anyone since Elliot and she didn't feel that she knew Ethan that well.
"Bye," Ethan said as he walked down the path out on to the street.
"Bye," Sarah said as she stood by her door and waved.
Sarah walked into her house hoping not to have everyone gather round and ask how it went. Luckily for her no one seemed to hear her coming in, but she knew she'd have to show face soon or else Tom and Kate would be getting worried thinking she was still out. Sarah wandered through to the kitchen hoping to find her mom there.
"Hey mom that's me home now," Sarah said.
"Have a good time?" Kate asked.
"Yeah it was good," Sarah said before leaving the room to go upstairs.
She bumped into Jake as she was walking up the stairs.
"Oh your home," Jake said.
"Yeah," Sarah smiled, "Want to go hang out?" Sarah suggested as it had been a while since she last hung out with just Jake.
"Sure," Jake replied.
They went upstairs to Jake's room and sat on his bed talking.
"Jake you really need to clean up in here it's a mess," Sarah said as she looked round Jake's room which looked more like a rubbish dump than a bedroom.
"Shut up, you sound like mom," Jake replied.
"Well I think I have to agree with mom when she says tidy your room, because it's actually quite disgusting in here," Sarah said as she looked over towards a bowl of cereal sitting by his bed which she thought had probably been there a while.
"So then how'd your date go?" Jake asked.
"Yeah it was good, like it was a little awkward because it was hard to make conversation because we don't really know each other, but as the night went on it got better," Sarah replied.
"So would you go on another date with him?" Jake asked.
"I suppose no reason not to, I don't know if I like him that much though but I suppose I don't really know him so yeah I would go on another date, so I would get to know him better, then I suppose I can tell if I like him or not," Sarah said.
Jake got up and turned his TV on and they sat and talked while they watched TV.
"You know Whitney and Vanessa are really going to hate you now even more than they did before since you went on a date with Ethan. They are already jealous that you went out with Elliot," Jake said.
"Yeah, I really couldn't care if they hated me or not because to be quite honest I hate them both, they walk around school thinking they own the place and think all the boys love them when they really don't. The only reason that they are ever hanging out with boys is because they won't leave them alone," Sarah said.
"Must admit I'm not a big fan of them either," Jake said.
Sarah smiled as she lay down on Jakes bed and continued to talk. She loved just spending time with Jake and she use to spend time with Jake and Mike all the time, but now it was just the odd occasion.
"Where is Mike?" Sarah asked as she felt it wasn't quite right without him, after all as Mike would say they were the three amigos.
"He's got a boarding competition today it was running on late but dad left to pick him up just before you came home so they should be home any minute now," Jake replied.
"Why didn't you enter?" Sarah asked.
"Too old it's for under fourteens you not remember me and you use to enter every year?" Jake said.
"Oh yeah! I would have went to watch but I never knew it was today," Sarah said.
"Yeah I was going to watch but I wasn't ready in time so they left without me," Jake said as he heard his dad's car pull up towards the house.
"Sounds like Mike's home," Sarah said as they both got and made their way downstairs to greet Mike and see how he did.
Judging by the huge smile on Mike's face they guessed that he had done well.
"How'd it go then dude?" Jake asked.
"Finished in 1st place," Mike said excitedly.
"Well done Mike!" Sarah said as she gave him a little clap.
"So sorry I couldn't come, I was going to but by the time I got home from school and got ready you two had left," Jake explained.
"Don't worry about it," Mike said, "I'll show you my trophy. Your names on it twice from when you won it a few years ago".
"Oh yeah, and now another Baker has his name on it," Jake said as he followed Mike through to the living room to see his trophy.
"Oh hey Sarah, never knew you were home," Jessica said as she walked over towards Sarah, "So how did your date go?" Jessica asked.
"It went fine," Sarah replied.
"Well you never know you might really like him once you get to know him better, and maybe if things go well you really be able to move on from Elliot, and soon he'll just total history," Jessica smiled.
"Yeah maybe," Sarah said with a fake smile. It really irritated her how Jessica was acting all nice when all she cared about was Sarah moving on so that she could get with Elliot.
Sarah quickly found a reason to disappear so she didn't have to continue this conversation with Jessica and before she got even more annoyed than she already was.
"Oh and Sarah you were right," Jessica said as Sarah began to walk away.
"About what?" Sarah asked.
"Ryan," Jessica replied, "You said that after speaking to him for 10 minutes that I would feel more comfortable, and you were right I did".
"That's good then, I told you so," Sarah smiled.
"He's actually a lot nicer than I thought he was, and he's not so big headed and full of himself either. It's more just confidence and I think it just comes across as cockiness," Jessica said.
"See I told you it wouldn't be that bad," Sarah replied as she went through to go join the rest of the family who was congratulating Mike.
"Now we can put that trophy up on our trophy shelf," Tom said as he put it on the middle shelf, "And I know it may not be anywhere near the size of the Murtaugh's trophy collection, but I just want to let you know me and your mother are so proud of you all, and every achievements you guys have up here. What is even better is that every single one of you has got an award up there and I am very proud to call myself your dad. Also another well done to Mike for winning his completion today!"
"I love when dad does that," Sarah said, "You know when he looks at us all and we can really tell he is proud of each and every one of us."
"Yeah me too," Mike said.
"Family hug!" Kim shouted as she felt the moment was right.
