Something seemed off, she couldn't put her finger on it but something was very out of place.

She had dropped Sofia off at Callie's room when she had arrived at work this morning so she knew she wasn't forgetting the child.

She just got done checking on one of her patients, a routine appendectomy that went off without a hitch and now she was going to sit down and work on some paperwork while she took a small break.

"Grey, have you seen Karev? I know you two are joined at the hip these days." Bailey quipped.

"No, I haven't actually." Meredith said, picking her phone up. That's what felt off. It wasn't like Alex to take a day off of work.

She pulled up his contact, pressing the option to call him. "Hey Alex, it's Mer. Just wondering where you are and if everything's okay. I hope you're alright...people are asking where you are and I'm wondering too so, please call me." Meredith said as she left a voicemail.

"That's strange." She paused for a moment. "Well, if I don't hear from him by the time my shift is over, I'll call him again."

They arrived home and Meredith helped Sofia inside, helping her take off her coat. She was a mess, nonstop thinking and worrying about where Alex was since he hadn't answered her call. She would hope that he would have called her if anything was seriously wrong.

"Hey Mer," she heard from the kitchen. She stopped in her tracks, a look of confusion washing over her as she struggled to form words.

"Alex, where the hell have you been? I've been worried sick all day." Meredith said, worried.

"Relax, Mer, I'm fine. I've been working on a little project all day and figured I would cook dinner for you guys." Alex said with a light smile.

"Well, thanks." Meredith smiled, taking her coat off as she slung it over the back of the chair. "Sofia, go get washed up for dinner, okay?"

"Okay!" Sofia said as she ran off towards the bathroom as Meredith watched before turning back to Alex.

"So what's this project you've been working on?" She asked curiously.

"I'll show you after dinner." Alex smiled, flipping a stack of waffles.

"Breakfast for dinner?" Meredith smiled, laughing lightly.

"Why not? It's food. Plus, waffles are amazing." Alex stated, matter of factly.

"Not gonna argue there." Meredith smiled softly.

Sofia came back from the bathroom, now dressed in pajamas as she took a seat at the island. "Waffles, those look yummy!" Sofia smiled.

"They do, don't they?" Meredith smiled. "I'll be right back, I have to use the bathroom...again." She sighed. These days she seemed to visit the bathroom more than anywhere else.

"Alright, let's eat." Alex said, dishing them all a plate. The sweet aroma of chocolate chip waffles filled the house, making them all a little more hungry.

"These are really good," Meredith commented, already halfway done with her stack as everyone else had barely started.

"I take it you were hungry," Alex laughed.

"Blame the baby, he makes me wanna eat everything these days." Meredith sighed. They finished their meal, Meredith quickly doing the dishes even though Alex had volunteered.

"Okay, now it's time for the surprise," Alex smiled. "I know you hate surprises Mer, but I promise you will like this one." He added, knowing the look Meredith was giving him.

Gently he grabbed her hand, leading her up the stairs as Sofia trailed behind. "Okay you two, close your eyes." Alex said when they reached the top of the staircase.

"How am I supposed to see where I'm going?" Meredith asked. "You know I'm already a danger magnet and factor in the pregnancy and I'm a hundred times worse."

Alex laughed. "Just keep hold on my hand." He led them down the hallway, anxiously waiting for Meredith's reaction.

Slowly he opened the door, gently pushing her inside.

"Alright, open your eyes," he whispered. Meredith gasped, looking around the room as she tried to soak it all in.

"Oh, my God," she whispered. "This room was just full of boxes yesterday, how did you do this?" She asked, turning around to look at him.

"Well, I worked really hard on it all day. That's why I wasn't at work." He whispered.

"You did this all by yourself?" She asked, shocked.

"Yeah, your boxes are in the basement, except some things that I've incorporated into the room." Alex whispered, holding his breath as he pointed to the wall by the nightstand.

She walked over, running her hand over the shadow boxes that lined the wall. There were two of them; the first contained her and Derek's Post-It note and the other contained Derek's scrub coat, his name visible in the embroidery.

Tears streamed down her cheeks, in a good way. She turned around, her breath catching in her throat again as she looked towards the crib. His blanket, his stupid blanket was draped over the railing, making her chuckle lightly. Above the crib in large wall stickers was Derek's catchphrase.

It's A Beautiful Day To Save Lives

"Alex," she breathed. "I- I don't know what to say." She glanced around the room again, the light green walls shaded the room perfectly. A bay window that had obviously been cleaned gave off a pretty good view of Seattle. Underneath it was a window seat that had cubbies for toys. In the corner was a rocking chair with a small nightstand next to it that had a picture frame that contained her last ultrasound photo. She was speechless and in pure bliss of everything.

"Auntie Mer, look!" Sofia squealed, running over to the twin bed that sat on a diagonal angle in the corner as she jumped up onto it.

"Very cool." Meredith smiled. Slowly she turned around, walking up to Alex as she wrapped her arms around him. "Thank you, Alex. I just...thank you." She smiled, looking up at him as tears streamed down her face.

"I'm glad you like it, I figured even though you won't be using the nursery part for a while, at least this will get the rugrat out of your bed." Alex smiled.

"Thanks," she said, chuckling softly. "It's hard to sleep when you got one kid using your bladder as a punching bag and another one kicking you in the face when she sleeps." She laughed. "Speaking of, I should probably get her to bed."

She turned around and smiled softly. "Okay Sofia, it's getting late. We should get you to bed." Sofia ran over to the bookshelf, grabbing a book before climbing into bed.

"You wanna read that tonight?" Meredith smiled, watching Sofia nod her head. "Okay."

"Can Alex stay and read it with us?" Sofia asked.

"Sure, I don't see why not," Meredith smiled, looking at Alex. "Come on, it won't take long." She whispered, taking Alex's hand into hers as they headed over to the bed. The three of them sat there, enjoying the time together. Her biggest project was done and now she could sit back and relax in what was sure to become her favorite room in the house. And she couldn't be more thankful to Alex for it.
