Chapter 25
Sarah walked over towards Ethan, "You look beautiful," Ethan said, before even saying hello.
Sarah blushed, "thanks". She really liked how sweet and charming Ethan was. She loved that he always complimented her because Sarah didn't always get a lot of compliments from people so it made her all embarrassed and blush if she ever got a compliment.
"You're welcome," Ethan smiled back, "That was the first thing I thought when I seen you so I just had to say it".
"You're looking not bad yourself," Sarah giggled.
"Thanks," Ethan replied, "So what do you want to do?"
"I don't know, we're in the centre of town so there is a lot to do," Sarah said.
"Do you want to go for an ice cream or something? Everyone is saying that ice cream place that just opened last week is really good," Ethan suggested.
"Yeah we can go there," Sarah replied as they started to head towards it. She felt a bit awkward like she did on the last date because she wasn't sure what to say to Ethan and sometimes she felt that the conversation was really awkward. She was just hoping that the more she got to know him the more they'd have to talk about.
"So what is it like have eleven siblings?" Ethan asked, making conversation.
"It's crazy at times," Sarah laughed, "But I can't imagine what it would be like to have no siblings or even just one or two because I'm so use to having eleven. I love them all. You're never alone or bored because there is always someone there to talk to, so that's really good. Jake and Mike aren't just my brothers they are actually my best friends".
"Yeah I've seen how close you and Jake are at school," Ethan said.
"Jake, Mike and I are all so alike so that's why I think we're as close as we are. We all love skate boarding as well and we've just always been really close. I'm only like 10 and a half month older than Jake so we got on from a young age, and then when Mike started like talking and walking he would always follow me and Jake and copying everything we did. So he just grew up, looking up to us and like trying to be like us so he just was always with us," Sarah said, "You got any brothers or sisters?"
"Yeah I've got a sister who's 24, so we're not very close because there is a big age gap and I have a brother who is ten, we get along alright," Ethan replied.
"I have twin brothers who are 10, they're really annoying but I love them," Sarah smiled.
"Having one ten year old brother is hard enough so I couldn't imagine having two. Must be double the trouble," Ethan laughed.
"Yup sure is," Sarah giggled as they approached the ice cream parlour.
Sarah took a seat as Ethan went and bought the ice creams. She was getting along with Ethan really well and was enjoying being in his company.
"Here you go," Ethan said handing Sarah her ice cream as he sat down.
"Thank you," she smiled back, "You enjoying living here then?"
"Yeah, I really like it here. The people here make it better, such as you," Ethan replied. Sarah blushed again.
They sat for another hour talking and getting to know each other before they started to walk home.
"You sure you want to walk? It would be quicker getting a taxi and my brother also offered to give me a lift home, "Sarah asked.
"Well it's up to you because I don't mind walking, it means I get to spend more time with you," Ethan replied. He really liked Sarah and was hoping that she felt the same way.
"Okay then we can walk," Sarah agreed.
The Baker's had arrived at the Murtaugh's, where Jimmy already had a few of his guests there.
"Hi," Serena said welcoming the Baker's into her house. "Leave you coats in the cupboard over there, all the kids are over in the sun lounge so you can all go in there and us adults will be in the living room.
All the baker kids went through to see the Murtaugh kids.
"Sup dude," Jake said to Elliot as he walked in.
"Glad your here now we've been so bored," Elliot said.
"Where is Sarah? Is she not here?" Becky said noticing that Sarah was missing.
"No she's got a date tonight with Ethan from school," Jake replied.
"But she might be coming later," Mike added.
Elliot went through to the kitchen to get some snacks and drinks for everyone. A few seconds later Jessica followed him in.
"Hey," she said as she leant against the worktop.
"Hi, I haven't seen you about much recently?" Elliot said, as it had felt like it had been a while since the two of them hung out.
"I know it's been a while," Jessica said, "I've just been really busy with Ryan,"
"Ryan?" Elliot asked. Jessica noticed that Eliot looked a little bit jealous and worried.
"My biology partner for this project we've got to do, it takes up so much time and work," Jessica replied, "it would probably be done by now if it wasn't for the fact that we always end up spending too much time talking.
"Oh yeah I remember you talking about him before. He invited you to the basketball trials before," Elliot said.
"Yeah that's him. He's really nice, I wasn't sure about him to begin with, but he's been really cool," Jessica replied.
"You two become friends now or something?" Elliot asked as he filled a bowl with crisps.
"Yeah we're actually quite close now," Jessica said, she was hoping that Elliot would be jealous and that he might actually say that he wanted to be with her.
"Cool," Elliot said, only saying a one word answer because he didn't know what else to say about Ryan. Jessica's plan was working because Elliot was beginning to feel a bit jealous and he knew that Jessica wasn't going to wait about forever for him, and if he continued to say they couldn't be together because he didn't want to upset Sarah, then eventually Jessica will move on. He knew that he either had to decide that they just remain friends or that they do actually begin a relationship.
"It is good to see Sarah moving on. I think she really likes this Ethan boy," Jessica said, trying to emphasis to Elliot that Sarah was moving on so maybe he should too.
"Yeah hopefully he'll treat her right," Elliot said.
"Better than you did," Jessica replied. She immediately regretted saying that because she knew it was a bit harsh, "Sorry that was a bit mean".
"It's true though," Elliot said looking saddened, "The way I treated Sarah has to be the one thing I regret most".
"We all do things that we're not proud of," Jessica said. One of the things that she wasn't proud of was the fact that she liked her sister's ex. She knew that that was one thing that you should never do is betray your sister and that is exactly what she was doing.
"the biggest thing I regret is betraying Sarah," Jessica said.
"So you regret us?" Elliot asked.
"No! I regret like how I've lied to Sarah all this time, but I don't regret what happened at the lake. In a way though it doesn't seem like it is worth it if there is nothing ever going to happen, so it's like I've betrayed Sarah for nothing," Jessica said. She knew it was true. What was the point in meeting Elliot in secret behind Sarah's back, kissing him at the lake and keeping it all from Sarah if there was never anything going to happen anyway.
"You know I like you, it's just I don't want to hurt Sarah anymore," Elliot said.
"Yeah but I don't see how that is fair. You can't like me that much or else you know we'd be together by now," Jessica said as she started to get annoyed. She had had enough of pretending that she didn't care and that she was cool with things the way they were, but she wasn't. She was getting tired of waiting around when it seemed that nothing was ever going to happen.
Elliot stuttered for a second before finding his words, "But you don't understand. I cheated on Sarah, I made her lie to her family, I made Jake not tell her about Sophie. It is my fault Mike ran away. I have hurt her so much and put her through so much. I would feel selfish if I just announced to her that I was going out with her sister. Do you think she'd approve of it? Because I don't want to be the reason that you and Sarah fall out. I don't want to cause another family argument in your family!"
"Yeah I get that but we don't know that she won't approve, we haven't asked her," Jessica replied.
"Did you not just hear all the horrible things I put Sarah through? Of course she isn't going to approve. You are her younger sister she looked out for you, she's protective. She knows what I'm capable of she isn't going to want me to be going out with you, she'll think I hurt you," Elliot said, trying to explain to Jessica that he doesn't want to hurt Sarah more.
"So then this whole time you've just been leading me on? You never once planned on being in a relationship with me did you?" Jessica said becoming emotional, "All this time you've worried about how Sarah may feel but what about me and how I feel".
"No! I haven't been leading you on. Your one of the people I'm closest to. It's complicated because I've tried to be friends with you but I can't help the way I feel and that I feel more for you than just friends," Elliot said.
"So what?" Jessica said, "Look at the situation we are in. What are we meant to do? You say you like me but that we're never going to happen because you don't want to hurt Sarah, and that we can't be friends because you feel more for me. Where does this leave us? What are we suppose to do?"
"I don't know Jess. I don't know," Elliot replied. He knew that she was right they couldn't be just friends if they felt more for each other.
"So what are saying then? Because it looks like we have two options. We either stop being friends because it's not working because we like each other and then we just go our separate ways, or we actually make a go of it?" Jessica said, realising that things could not continue the way they were.
Elliot took a deep breath and held Jessica's hand and looked in her eyes as he spoke, "Jessica you know how I feel about you and you are actually one of the nicest people I have ever met but I can't hurt Sarah again. I really can't. I can't be the reason that you and Sarah stop speaking I don't want to cause any more problems in your family," Elliot said. It killed him to say it but he knew he couldn't be with Jessica without causing confrontation within the Baker family and he felt he had already caused enough problems. He had things back on track, Jake and he were like best friends again and even Sarah was speaking to him, he didn't want to ruin it all and make everyone hate Jessica.
"So what does this mean that we can't be friends?" Jessica said looking upset.
"Well I think we need space and time to get over this, because your right we cannot continue the way that this is going, it's too complicated," Elliot replied.
Jessica walked out the back door and sat on the step outside. She was devastated at how things had turned out. She had hoped and dreamed that one day Elliot would finally say that he wanted to be with her and tell her he loved her. But now everything was over. Jessica had never felt this upset before and now felt that she knew what getting your heartbroken feels like.
Kim noticed her sister had been missing a while and went to go find her.
"Hey there you are. The party's inside you know," Kim said. She noticed that Jessica looked very upset, "What's wrong?"
"I don't want to talk about it," Jessica replied. Kim knew that this had to involve Elliot as she had seen them talking a few minutes before.
"What's he done? Kim asked.
"Who?" Jessica replied.
"Elliot?" Kim said.
"Is it that obvious that it's him?" Jessica asked.
"Well we are twins so I know when something's up and it was a pretty easy guess to presume it was him," Kim smiled.
"I took your advice and tried making him jealous by speaking about Ryan in front of him,"
"Ryan?" Kim said.
"Yeah I would just say how busy we had been revising together and how nice he is, which is true. Well anyway I think it might of worked but in a bad way. I think he realised that we couldn't go on this way and that soon one of us would move on if nothing was ever going to happen. So basically he said we shouldn't be friends as we need space to get over each other," Jessica replied.
"I'm sorry Jess, I know that you really liked him. I never you see get like that over a boy before," Kim said as she hugged her sister.
"Thanks Kim," Jessica smiled, "And thanks for not saying anything to Sarah".
"It's ok, now let's go back inside and enjoy the rest of this party," Kim replied .
Hope you enjoyed it and please review!
