"Remember Adam, I will always be with you no matter what," says his mother.
She kisses the top of his head with a smile on her face. His father smiled composed himself and walked into the room. His mother smiles at his husband, it is a mystery why his parents fell in love. His mother wished his father good evening and kissed his cheek. He gives her the same kindness but nothing more. He informs Adam to go get ready for bed at once his schooling will begin at once. Adam wished goodnight to his parents and went upstairs. His mother lectured his father on being more gentle to Adam. His father informed her that he didn't know how to do so.
"You were gentle with me once upon a time," says his mother.
She walks upstairs to read Adam a bedtime story. His father follows upstairs after a while and enjoys the story for a few minutes before going to do some paperwork. He knew his wife wouldn't like it if she was interrupted by telling a story. He waits until she leaves to sit on the bed beside his son. Adam wakes up and looks at his father on the bed.
"Daddy?" says Adam.
"I am sorry for my coldness, you see my father only taught me in the ways of being cold and I shouldn't have taken it out on you of my learning. I am still learning to be a better father as you are learning to be a good son. Let's learn together," says his father.
Adam smiles sitting up in bed and nods in agreement to his father. His father slowly pats his son on his head before leaving the bed. It wasn't much but it was more than his father has done in a while. As the weeks followed Adam goes to the same teachers that his father had before him. Two months later, Adam's father asks his mother if he could read the story tonight. His mother was surprised but did agree to it. Adam gives his father a chance on reading the story. In the middle of it, his mother comes to watch her boys with the story. She smiled at her boys before she started coughing up blood and fainted to the ground.
"Mother?!" calls Adam.
He rushes over with his father who scoops his mother up.
"Adam go get the doctor now tell him it is urgent!" says his father.
Adam runs as fast as his little legs can carry him to the family doctor and brings him back. The doctors do many tests but can't find a real answer so begins on some treatment and medicine. For the next nine months, the doctors work endlessly to try to save Adam's mother. At the beginning of the year, the doctors tell Adam's father that there isn't anything else they could do for their mother. Adam's father spends the remaining of his wife's days by her bedside and Adam reads to his mother before bedtime. Adam is heartbroken the day that his mother dies and is taken away from her bedside. His father goes back to his cold ways and shoves his feelings inside of him. Adam is pushed into his schoolwork more and more. He is forced to give up his playtime for study time at a young age. At dinner, he isn't allowed to talk to his father even though that is the only time he sees his father. He only says Goodnight to his father and informs him that school is going well. Adam stops reading other than what he is told to read. He no longer reads stories or tells stories. He throws himself into his work much like his father. He turns cold just as his father did. He doesn't make friends and doesn't learn games like most children do.
