Chapter 37
Sarah was walking alone the school corridor when she stopped as she heard someone shouting her name. She turned round and seen that it was Ethan. Sarah had a slight look of worry on her face because she knew she had barley spoke to Ethan since their last date.
"Hey," Sarah smiled as Ethan got up with her.
"What been going on with you lately? I've not seen you in over a week. Is everything ok? It kind of seems like you have been avoiding me," Ethan asked Sarah.
"It really is a long story have you not heard it all ready the whole school has been speaking about it?" Sarah asked Ethan.
Ethan looked puzzled, Sarah could tell that he obviously hadn't heard the story about Jessica. Sarah felt awkward because the last time she was out with Ethan he asked her out so she wasn't sure if there were like boyfriend and girlfriend of if there were just dating.
"By the way it's nothing that you've done," Sarah reassured Ethan in case he thought that her not seeing him recently was something that he had done, "And I've not purposely been avoiding you, to be honest I've been avoiding everyone".
"You know you can talk to me Sarah. It is best not to keep things bottled up inside you need to let your feelings out rather than let them eat away at you," Ethan advised Sarah. Ethan was just happy that he hadn't done anything wrong to upset Sarah because he really liked her and didn't want to lose her.
Sarah was flattered by how nice Ethan was being to her considering she hadn't spoken to him in a week, "To be honest I've been keeping things bottled up inside for too long and now that all this stuff going on with my family is out in the open, I'm now able to let out my anger and sadness," Sarah said to Ethan, "do you mind if we change the subject I'm sick of everyone talking about it and asking if I'm ok all time. Ask someone else about the whole story with my sister Jessica and I'm sure they will have heard it and be able to update you on that".
"I hear your not playng in the basketball game today?" Ethan asked.
"No I've pulled a muscle in me foot," Sarah said.
"Well then why don't you come along and watch the game and then afterwards we could go do something and I could try and cheer you up and we don't have to mention any of the crap that is going on with you right now and you can just enjoy yourself," Ethan suggested.
Sarah smiled, it was the biggest smile she had in a while at least since the truth about Jessica and Elliot had gotten out, "That sounds like a really good idea," Sarah replied before she walked with Ethan towards the school's gym where the basketball was taking place.
Jessica and Emily were also making their way to the school's basketball court to go watch the game.
"I'm sorry that Kim is putting you in an awkward situation because I know that you want to remain friends with both of us but Kim is making that kind of impossible. But I won't be offended and I'll completely understand if you choose to be friends with Kim over me," Jessica said. She didn't want everyone to turn on Emily just because she was still speaking to her when no one else was.
"Jessica no one can tell me who I can and can't speak to so if Kim tried to make it impossible for me to be friends with both of you then it's her loss because I'm not going to stop speaking to you just to make Kim happy. I make my own decisions in live," Emily replied. Emily was a very independent thinker and didn't like other people trying to make their mind up for her.
When they got the basketball game the teams were still warming up. There wasn't a lot of seats left and Jessica and Emily found themselves just sitting in front of Kim who was with three other girls who had been Jessica's friends too but now no longer spoke to her.
"This is just great," Jessica could hear Kim say sarcastically as she sat down in front of her.
Ryan, Elliot, Jake, Ethan and Sarah all played for the school team but Sarah was on the bench for this game due to an injury to her foot.
"Isn't this a little bit awkward for you since both Elliot and Ryan are playing?" Emily asked Jessica.
"Yeah it is a bit. I've spoken to Elliot yet so I'm guessing he must be really annoyed with me right now," Jessica replied.
The team was still warming up and Jake could sense that there was tension between Elliot and Ryan as they were both trying to avoid each other.
"Dude I know my sisters made things weird between you and Ryan but you have to put that aside and play together as a team because so far you have totally avoided passing the ball to him and he's avoided passing it to you," Jake said to Elliot as he could tell that if they didn't pass to one another then this would let the whole team down.
Elliot just nodded in agreement. The coach had called the team in for a team talk before the game started. Elliot had noticed Jessica sitting in the crowd. He was still yet to speak to her since he found out about her and Ryan. Jessica had noticed Elliot looking at her and she just looked back. Elliot didn't know what he was going to say to Jessica if he saw her because he was hurt but then he was a in no position to judge someone who had fallen for two people at once when the same thing happened to him.
"Elliot!" the coach shouted to Elliot who was in a daydream.
"Dude!" Jake said as he nudged Elliot to get his attention. Ryan had noticed that Elliot was staring at Jessica and could tell by the look on Elliot's face that he felt the same way about Jessica as he did.
The game started and after five minutes they got off to a good start by taking the lead.
As the game went on it was becoming obvious to everyone there watching and the players that Ryan and Elliot were not passing the ball to each other, even when the other was open and instead would pass to someone else and then lose possession.
They were now down by one point and Elliot had the ball and he dribbled down the left hand side of the court. Ryan was in a great position by the basket to score and he was the best option to pass the ball and would be a great chance to take the lead in the game, but instead Elliot avoided passing it to Ryan and instead passed it to Ethan but instead another player form the other team intercepted the ball and dribbled towards their basket before passing to another player who got it in the basket to get three points.
"Dude I was wide open why didn't you pass to me," Ryan shouted at Elliot as he walked over towards him.
"I thought Ethan was a better option," Elliot lied.
"You've been doing this the whole game!" Ryan shouted.
"So have you," Elliot replied.
"You're just avoiding passing this to me because you now dislike me because Jessica had a thing with me," Ryan said as he brought Jessica into the argument.
"Well I'm sorry but to remind you I was never actually in a proper relationship with Jessica so don't act all smug as if she wanted you more than me," Elliot replied.
"I have no idea what on earth Jessica saw in you. I would never have treated her the way that you did. You tried to keep her your dirty little secret and played all sort of mind games with her!"
"What and you weren't her dirty little secret then because she seemed to keep you hidden," Elliot responded, "she obviously wanted me more or else she would have just went public with you!"
Ryan charged forward and pushed Elliot and then Elliot pushed him back and the two of them ended up in a fight.
Jessica couldn't believe what she as seeing and everyone was now staring at her and shouting at her, "Look at what you've caused!" someone shouted.
Jake, Ethan and a few of the other players tried to break up the fight before the umpire came over and sent the two of them off from the game.
"Look what you two have done you've let the whole team down," Ethan said.
"Get out of my sight now," the coach shouted. He was not impressed with Ryan or Elliot, "You two will be punished for this!"
Sarah followed Elliot and Ryan to the changing room. She knew she wasn't allowed in the boys changing room but she had to speak to them and make sure that they didn't end up in another fight.
Elliot's lip was swollen and bleeding and it looked like he was going to get a black eye while Ryan had a bleeding nose and had a lump coming up on his head.
"Guys what are you doing?" Sarah shouted you are letting the whole team down. Sarah went and got ice for Ryan to hold on his head to reduce the swelling and for Elliot's lip.
"All this because of Jessica," Sarah said quietly. Elliot and Ryan never said anything and both sat in silence staring at the wall.
"I'm sorry Sarah I never meant to cause all of this," Elliot said as he looked over towards Sarah, "I know that this probably embarrassed you too".
"Just a little bit," Sarah replied, "Look you guys need to sort this out for the sake of the basketball team".
"I don't think you are really in a position to tell us to sort things out because the last I knew you weren't speaking to Jessica or Kim," Ryan replied. Sarah realised that that was a fair point and maybe she did have a cheek to tell them to make up when she was just as bad.
The coach walked into the changing room, Sarah explained why she was in there even though it was the boys changing room before she left and left the coach to speak to them both. Elliot and Ryan were both suspended from the team until further notice.
