Chapter Eleven: Meet Marlow

At the crash site of Packard's crew, 17 had helped the soldiers bury what dead they could find. Once they had covered the last one, a soldier stuck the shovel into the ground before Packard started to give a eulogy for them, "These men did not die in vain." A great anger had taken hold of Packard's heart as he looked at the ground and said, "I swear to God, that their deaths will not go unanswered."

Most of the soldiers nodded in agreement to what he said, but 17 didn't like what Packard was thinking. Packard put his helmet back on before looking down to the helmets of his fallen soldiers. With a glare he said, "Now let's get to Chapman and those munitions." Looking over to 17 he said, "Go and get Randa. We're clearing out."

"Okay." 17 nodded before walking off to find the scientist.

After about an hour or so of walking, 17 and his group came into a dense bamboo forest. While he couldn't sense energies like Broly could, the android did put his ranger training to use by keeping an ear out and observing his surroundings. The android and the humans carefully stepped through the forest. Cole looked to Mills and asked, "You ever heard about the story of the mouse, the lion and the thorn, Mills?"

"Yeah." Mills nodded. Cole then said, "There you go then." Thinking of a possible future encounter he said, "In case we ever see that primate again."

"You do know that story is about a mouse becoming friends with the lion after taking the thorn out of his pow though, right?" Mills asked, confused about what Cole was referring to. It seemed to confuse Cole as he stopped moving and looked to Mills and shook his head, "No, it's not." Then he tells it the way he heard it, "The mouse kills the lion with the thorn."

A buzzing mosquito landed on Mills cheek and he squashed it. Then he looked to his comrade and asked, "Who told you that, Cole?"

"My mother." He said, as if that's how the story is supposed to go. Cole then started to walk off while Mills then said as he somewhat figured Cole's deal, "That actually explains a lot."

"We all grow up in different households." 17 said from behind. He would have said more, but the slightest sound of movement caught his ears. The android glanced up and didn't see much in the trees when he suddenly got a feeling that some of the trees weren't trees. One soldier stopped to take a sip of water from his canteen. When he lowered it he gasped at what he saw. Time seemed to slow down as 17 looked back to the soldier and saw something coming right at him. Acting fast, 17 leapt for the soldier and knocked him out of the way of the leg. The leg crashed to the ground and impaled the canteen instead.

(Cue Spider Attack track from Kong: Skull Island)

Everyone looked back as both 17 and the soldier looked up to see something moving in the trees. A giant spider of sorts walked through the trees while making some sort of chittering noises. 17 looked to the soldiers and placed a finger to his lips to tell them to keep quiet. The soldiers did just that as 17 slowly helped the soldier back to his feet. When they started to move again, they made sure to step lightly. That was until one soldier stepped on a twig that made a loud snapping sound.

Sensing possible danger, the spider lashed out at the sound and knocked the soldier away. The spider tried to step on the group as Cole shouted, "Watch out!"

"What is it?" Reles shouted, becoming freaked out by what it was. They all moved out of the way as the spider kept trying to impale them. Mills narrowly avoided the leg coming down behind him and shouted, "Watch your six fellas!"

"Up above!" Cole shouted and pointed his weapon up to the sky. 17, knowing that there was another way, shouted, "I'll get its attention and lead it away! You lot get going!"

Flying up to the tops of the trees, 17 came face to face with the spider before creating a barrier of light around himself. The light blinded the spider and it screeched as it stepped back. Down below, Packard, Randa, Woodward and the soldiers started to make a break for it, but the spider's legs made it nearly impossible to make it out. The spider then released webbing from its abdomen and caught Mills and a few other soldiers. Mills cried out, "Cole! No, no!"

"Mills!" Cole shouted and dropped his gun while trying to grab his friend. But Mills and the soldiers were yanked too high for them. 17 saw their dilemma and stopped his barrier. He flew at them before holding his hand over his head and fired a ball of energy at the strands. Looking down he shouted, "Be ready to catch them!"

The soldiers readied themselves as the ball of energy sliced through the strands of webbing, all but one. While the other soldier's fell to the ground, the soldier still stuck in the web cried out as he was brought up to the mandibles of the giant spider. Cole noticed one of the spider's legs and got an idea, "Cut the legs! Cut it off the legs!"

Some of the soldiers complied and hacked at the spider's legs. Reles jumped out of the way when one of the legs came down at him and nearly struck him. But it missed him by a few inches. Reles gave a breath of relief before the spider tried again. Reles rolled to the side just as the leg came back and embedded itself into the ground. Reles acted quickly and slashed at the leg. 17 moved to save the soldier being held by the spider's mandibles when gave a snarling crunch to the man. Packard, Randa and 17 all stared at the now lifeless man in the arachnid's jaws. Packard raised his rifle and unloaded a few shots into the spider. The beast cried out as the loss of limbs and blood made it fall to the ground. As it came down, Cole pulled Mills out of the way while everyone moved out of the way. The spider crashed to the ground and chittered as it had been defeated. Packard walked up to the spider's face and pulled out his pistol.

The colonel aimed at the spider's face and was about to open fire when 17 landed in front of him and said, "That's not necessary, Packard." Gesturing to the giant spider he then said, "It's been beaten."

"I'm puttin' it out of its misery." Packard said, though he couldn't care any less. 17 shook his head and said, "It'll be able to heal on its own. Just leave it be."

But Packard was too angry to head the android's words and opened fire. 17 was able to jump out of the way, but the bullet went through the spider's face. 17 looked with shock as Packard let loose for more shots with a glare in his eyes. The group moved out of the forest and took a breather from what had just happened. While some looked about for any other threats to them, soldier's like Cole and Mills could only think about how close they had been to dying again. Even Randa sat on a log as he thought about what had just happened. Feeling that they had had enough, Packard then got them going by saying, "Shake it off, you guys! Let's move out."

But before any of them started moving again, the sound of something snarling in the distance could be heard. 17 looked around to see if he could see what was making the sound, but couldn't locate the source. Everyone rose onto their feet and started moving again.

Over with the other group, they walked through a forest of their own. Seeing a clearing up ahead, Conrad then said, "Stay tight, everyone."

They soon came through the tree line and found themselves before a somewhat amazing sight. Slivko looked at their surroundings and said, "What the heck is all this?"

Conrad, Broly, Cheelai and Lemo prepared themselves as the group walked in what appeared to be ruins of some kind. A broken archway stood between some of the trees while there were other stone structures around them. Lemo pressed a button on his scouter and said, "Step carefully, everyone. I got readings up ahead."

"And they're close." Broly added. The group walked to the archway and found themselves in front of an archway. Cheelai said, "You know, it's actually kind of nice in a way."

No one said anything as they looked around at the structures. Weaver raised her camera and took a few pictures of the ruins. But when she tried to take a picture of some of the paintings, a pair of eyes opened making her gasp in fright. They all looked around as a tribe of warriors wielding spears appeared from their hiding spots. Slivko looked behind them and shouted, "Oh! Behind us!"

"Everybody, stay calm. Stay calm." James Conrad said as the group formed a circle with Broly in the middle. Conrad, Slivko, Cheelai, Brooks, Lemo and Nieves held their weapons while Broly held his hands by his side and he started to gather energy in his palms. Green orbs of energy appeared in his hands as he readied himself while Brooks shouted at the warriors, "Stay back!"

Much shouting was going on as the warriors came in closer with the spears pointed at the group. Trying to keep things peaceful, Conrad warned, "Don't shoot! Don't shoot!"

More of the strange people walked through the opening and Broly suddenly sensed a presence nearby. He could tell that it was human, but it felt much different than the group or the strange peoples. Those in the group who had a weapon kept them trained on the warriors. Brooks even cocked his as he prepared to fire. But a voice from the entrance caught them all off guard, "Whoa, whoa, whoa."

The group looked to see an older man carefully make his way through the tribe as he tried to calm the situation, "No, no, no. There's no need for any of that." He moved between the groups and said, "Come on now!" Looking to everyone in the clearing he said, "Everybody, just keep your wigs on now!"

"What?" Slivko asked as he was confused. Cheelai then said, "I'm guessing that you're friends with these guys, huh?"

"That's right, green lady." The old man said as he didn't know her name. Then with a shake of his head he said, "I didn't believe it when they said that you were coming."

The group just looked at him with stares as he happily said, "I was up all night just thinking about how me and Gunpei dreamed of this moment." He gave a chuckle and said, "And now here it is. Twenty-eight years, eleven months and eight failed attempts to get back to the world, and instead the world comes to me?"

"Funny how life works, eh?" Lemo joked. This made the old man laugh a little and he looked to the tribe. They didn't say anything as they continued to point their spears at the group. The old man looked to the group and he told them, "They never smile."

"Did you crash here?" Weaver asked him. The old man then said, "Oh. Sorry, miss." Then he saluted to them and said, "Lieutenant Hank Marlow of the forty-fifth." Marlow looked down at his getup and he said, "Put the old flight suit on for your arrival."

Weaver nodded as he laughed. The group didn't say much as Marlow then said, "You lot are more beautiful than a hot dog and a beer at Wrigley Field on opening day."

Marlow looked down at his hands as if imagining that they were really there. Most of the group gave him weirded out looks and Cheelai said, "You okay there, Marlow."

"Oh, yeah." Hank said, getting back on track. That's when he noticed Broly at the back. As if seeing Broly from somewhere, Marlow snapped his fingers and said, "Hey, big fella. I see you somewhere before?"

"No." Broly said as he moved to the front of the group. When he was more visible to Marlow and the tribe, the warriors retracted their spears and Marlow asked, "You're real?" He squinted at Broly as if to make sure, "Right?"

"Yes." Broly said. The group noticed Marlow and the tribe's reaction and Cheelai asked, "You know of Broly?"

"Oh," Marlow said with a nod, "he's been expected for quite a while."

The entire group looked to each other with questioning looks. Weaver looked to Marlow and asked, "What do you mean by that?"

"Come on, we'll show you." Marlow gestured for them to follow. Slivko then said, "Not that this isn't fascinating, but there's something out there, man."

"Oh, there's a lot out there." Marlow nodded. Then knowing what was important he said, "Now, come on. We gotta get back home." With a smile to Broly he said, "Everyone's gonna want to see you, my friend."

While the group had mixed looks of relief, skepticism or confusion, Marlow then added, "Plus, you don't wanna be out here when it's night."

The tribe and Marlow turned to walk back through the entrance. Broly and the group looked to each other before silently deciding to follow Marlow and his friends.
