Chapter Twelve: Higher Powers

After having doing some recon around the surrounding river, Jack Chapman stopped at the river and looked up into the air to see a huge flock of birds cawing as they flew by overhead. The sound of snarling echoed across the mountains, but he could tell that it was at a distance. He didn't even seem to notice something as it swam through the water. When nothing seemed to be causing him any trouble, Chapman decided to refill his canteen. Removing his belt and setting down with his gun, Chapman set them on a rock and waded out into the water. He placed the canteen in the water and waited for it to fill up. When he felt that it was enough, Chapman dipped his hand into the water and splashed some on his face to clear some of the dried blood from the battle off.

(Cue Dominant Species track from Kong: Skull Island)

As he continued to wash the blood off, the sounds of rustling drew his attention. From the sounds he could tell that it was something big coming his way. Something large came from behind the mountain on Chapman's right and he saw that it was the giant ape. The soldier stood very still as Kong walked across the river. Kong looked about before turning in Chapman's direction. When the giant ape started walking towards him, Chapman started running as fast as he could. He hid behind the rock and looked up as Kong came to a stop. Kong sniffed to see if there were any threats or anything nearby before looking to the wound on his right arm with a soft chitter. Reaching his left arm up to the wound he gently pressed it before looking down at the blood on his hands. Then he gently raised his other hand to his face and gently touched the wound on his cheek. Kong grunted in pain from it, but then kneeled down to the water.

Chapman watched as Kong looked down at his arm and moved it around before looking to the wound. Kong pushed into it with his left hand, but groaned in pain when it hurt. Kong clenched and unclenched his hand as he struggled to make it work. When it didn't seem to hurt to move it, Kong looked down to his reflection in the water. Gently touching the water's surface with a finger, Kong watched as the water rippled. Then he dipped his hand in the water before bringing it back up for him to drink. Chapman watched on as the water looked like a waterfall as the excess water fell from Kong's hand. When it ran out, Kong looked ahead and Chapman thought that Kong was reaching for him and he backed away. But Kong instead shoved his hand into the water before pulling something out with a growl.

Chapman watched a battle unfold between Kong and an octopus as the latter wrapped its tentacles around Kong. Kong roared as the tendrils wrapped around his legs, neck and arms. Then gripping the tentacle wrapped around his throat, Kong roared again as he pried it off. Kong then stepped on the octopi's head and crushed it underfoot. Then reaching down, Kong grabbed one of the dead octopi's tentacles before ripping it apart. Chapman yelped as the piece came flying at him and moved out of the way.

(End of track)

When he looked back to Kong, he watched as Kong put a few pieces of octopi in his mouth. Chapman was kind of grossed out as he continued to watch Kong eat. When most of the tentacles had been consumed, Kong stood back up and started to walk off while dragging his food behind him. A panting Chapman could only watch as Kong left him alone.

Unfortunately, Chapman wasn't alone as the sound of footsteps behind him drew his attention. Seeing his gun on the rocks beside him, Chapman quickly grabbed it and turned to whatever it was. But his eyes widened at what he saw; a man wearing white armor, black pants and had strange looking face, as if it had been stitched so many times. The man held up a hand and told the soldier, "Do not be afraid, Jack Chapman."

"Who are you?" Chapman questioned. He kept his finger on the trigger as he then added, "How the heck do you know my name?"

"I am Geras." The man introduced. And then he said, "But how I know your name is unimportant. What is important is your belief in your commander. And how it is flawed."

"Colonel Packard?" Chapman asked while slightly lowering his weapon. Geras nodded and he said, "I know that every soldier has a duty to their men…" He looked a little sad as he added, "And to their family."

"What do you mean?" Jack asks. Geras then said, "I can be sure that you do make it back to your family alive. But you must be willing to leave the island."

Chapman looked as if he were starting to think of it, but then shook his head and said, "No way, man. Most of my friends are dead. Someone's gotta see them avenged."

"I see." Geras said as he looked down. Then he warned, "But I must let you know, should you go any further away from your crash site, and you will most likely perish."

"Is that a threat?" Chapman questioned. But before he could do anything, everything around Geras started to freeze. When he was sure that he had frozen time around Chapman, Geras took a step closer to the soldier. Though Chapman was frozen, Geras then said, "Know that your death would help the colonel with his mission, but it would not accomplish anyone in the long run."

Then using his gifts from Kronika, Geras formed into a tornado of sand before disappearing. Soon Chapman was released from being frozen and saw that Geras had vanished. He looked around for the strange man, but couldn't see him anywhere. Picking up his stuff, Chapman then started to head off again and ignored Geras' advice.

The group had followed Marlow to the tribe's village and saw a huge wall on the river. Marlow glanced back and said, "I bet you all have probably noticed a lot of weird things on this here island." But then he reassured them and said, "As long as we stay in here where the people live, we'll be all right."

Weaver looked back to the wall and asked, "That wall, is it supposed to keep the giant ape out?"

"Nah," Marlow shook his head. Gesturing to the tribe he said, "he's not the one that they're trying to keep out."

"Wait, what?" Brooks asked as they continued to follow Marlow. As they walked by many a villager as they were going about their usual lives, they looked up to Broly but didn't say a word. The group saw some cooking, weaving or standing guard. Marlow then explained about the tribe, "These people live up on top of the trees while we're down on the roots. Some of them don't even seem to age." Marlow smiled as he said, "There's no crime, no personal property. They're past all of that."

"Sounds like a good place to live." Cheelai said. Marlow glanced back and said, "It is." Looking to Broly he said, "It's a really peaceful place."

The group stopped when a couple of the village elders and a few warriors walked up to them. Marlow held his hands out to his sides and started to communicate with the elders in some way. The group watched them for another moment or so before the two elders bowed their heads. Marlow nodded and said to both of them, "Thank you. Thank you."

"So, good news." Marlow said as he turned to the group, "They say you can stay here."

The elders turned to Broly and stared intently at him, but the Saiyan didn't know what to do and looked to Marlow. But the old man just shrugged before saying, "I guess that they're wanting to know if you're the one."

"I don't hear them saying anything." Conrad said, very confused about all this. The elders turned and led the group as Marlow explained, "Oh, they don't speak too much." He shrugged as he admitted, "When you've been here as long as I have, you start to understand. You'll see."

"Wait a minute. Wait, wait, wait." Nieves said as he moved to the front of the group. Then shaking his head he said, "We can't stay here. We have to get off the island. We have lives. I have a life."

"Hey, pal." Cheelai said as she moved between Nieves and Marlow. Then crossing her arms she said, "We all have lives. But those lives won't matter if don't finish the job."

"What job?" Marlow asked. Conrad then said, "All will be explained in time. All right?"

"What ever lands here tends to stay here." Marlow then said. Then he added, "At least that's how it was for me and Gunpei."

"You mentioned a Gunpei before." Lemo recalled. Then looking around he asked, "Where is he?"

Marlow's usual happy face fell for a moment before looking to the orange skinned alien. Then he said, "Don't worry. All will be explained."

He gestured with his hand, "Come on. Follow us."

(Cue The Temple track from Kong: Skull Island)

The group followed Marlow and the tribe across the path. When they saw their destination, all eyes widened at the sight. A large metal ship sat grounded on the river bed. The group walked to an opening and Marlow said, "As far as I can tell, this ship washed up about ten years before I did."

"Wait? You've been here since forty-four?" Weaver asked. Marlow nodded and said, "Yeah." Then looking back he asked, "Say, what happened with the war? Did we win?"

"You'll have to ask them." Cheelai said and gestured to Universe Thirteen's inhabitants. Slivko then asked, "Which one?"

"Uh-huh." Marlow nodded, knowing that there have been a lot of scrapes. Then ducking underneath a narrow opening he then said, "That makes sense."

The group followed him, all except Broly, who had to walk over to a bigger opening. When he was in he hurried up to catch up to the others. Glancing back Marlow explained the place to them, "This ship has become hallowed ground to them. So if you'd like to keep your hands, then don't touch anything."

They followed Marlow around a corner to a bigger chamber within the ship. When he reached the entrance, Marlow pulled off his cap in respect before continuing further. Weaver looked around and said, "Oh. Look at that."

There were a few villagers inside the chamber as they rose to their full heights with the elders in front. The elders turned around and walked deeper into the chamber while the other villagers backed away. The group looked about before looking to their left to see an image made with an assortment of boards. Conrad and Broly walked up to it as Marlow then said, "The way they tell it, for thousands of years, the people on this island lived in fear."

Conrad narrowed his eyes at the image as he tried to make out what it was. The image became that of a few tribe warrior's trying to defend themselves from a variety of giant monsters, "That's a heck of a long time to be scared."

They looked to the next image and saw a familiar face that was surrounded by a few villagers, "And then, one day, the craziest thing happened. Some of the things that they were afraid of started protecting them against the things that were eating them."

The next image showed a sad sight of Kong standing before two skeletons of his family. Even Marlow looked sad as they all looked at the image, "But nothing lasts forever, I guess."

They walked up to the final paintings and saw the villagers standing before Kong who looked like a deity in the painting. Marlow then told them, "And this is where they honor the last of their saviors."

"The last?" Cheelai asked. Marlow nodded as he walked up to the final portrait and said, "Yeah. That's Kong. The last of his kind."

"What is Kong to the people?" Broly asked. Marlow looked to the Saiyan and said, "Well, in terms of nature, he's king around here." Then pointing to the Iwi's he said, "But to them he's God to these people."

He nodded as he added, "And Kong's a pretty good king. Keeps to himself mostly. And we do see him from time to time." Talking about the island he said, "And this island, this is his home. We're just guests here."

Marlow then pointed to the group and said, "But you don't go into someone's house and start dropping bombs unless you're picking a fight." Then looking to Broly he said, "And the Iwi's would kind of appreciate it if you or them didn't try to pick fights."

"He mostly did it in self-defense." Cheelai said in Broly's defense. Lemo then added, "Yeah. Broly only fought against Kong to protect us."

"And the hair changing and obvious power growth?" Marlow asked with a quirked brow. Cheelai then rubbed the back of her head and said, "Yeah, that was something that we were hoping wouldn't happen."

"And we know that the bombs were a bad move." Weaver said. But then she asked, "But is there more of a reason why?" Then she asked, "And wasn't Kong the one who killed your friend, Gunpei?"

"Yeah. There is." Marlow nodded, answering the first question. Then he shook his head for the second question, "No." Then pointing to another image he said, "One of them did."

They all looked to see a mural of a lizard like creature as Marlow then said, "Kong's god on the island, but the devils live below us."

"And what are they called?" Conrad asked. Marlow whispered as he said, "The Iwis won't speak their actual name. But I call them…" Marlow, Broly, Cheelai and Lemo all said at the same time, "Skullcrawlers."

Marlow and the Monarch team looked at the three with quirked brows. Cheelai then said, "Let's just say that we've encountered one of those."

"Really?" Marlow asked. Broly, Lemo and Cheelai all nodded to confirm it. Then he asked in awe, "How did you survive?"

"With Broly and a few of our friends' help." Lemo said. Weaver then asked the three, "So the name sticks around?"

They nodded and Marlow said, "How did you know of that name when I just made that name up. It was meant to scare you."

"Well, we're fine with calling them that." Weaver said, trying to put Marlow at ease. She looked to Conrad and asked, "Are you cool with that?"

"Yeah…" James nodded. Marlow then said, "They're big lizard things. Nasty."

Broly looked to the image of the Skullcrawler as Marlow said, "They come up from the vents deep down. That's why Kong got so mad. Those bombs woke up a bunch of them."

Marlow then told them, "And I'll tell you what. You're lucky that he's out there, too, or you wouldn't have made it this far."

"Are they that dangerous?" Lemo asked. Marlow nodded and said, "They're crafty jerks. And their mean as heck." He sounded calm as he said, "Now, he can handle them as long as he gets to them when they're still small." But then he warned them, "But you don't wanna wake up the big one."

"How big is it?" San asked. The group didn't like the sound of it as Marlow said, "Bigger. It wiped out his whole family."

He moved behind the group as he said, "Kong's the last of his kind, but he's still growing. And you better hope he does." Then he warned, "Because the Iwis say that once Kong goes, the big one comes up." Conrad, Broly, Weaver, Lemo and Cheelai look to the villagers as Marlow chuckled as he said, "Then it's, 'Goodnight, Irene.'"

"A chain reaction has started." Lemo said to the group. The five all formed a huddle and he said, "By dropping those bombs, we've unleashed the small ones. And if Kong should be killed by us or them..."

"Then the big one will rise." Cheelai surmised. But then she thought of something, "But what of the Legendary Skullcrawler? It still hasn't arrived yet."

"That is another issue." James nodded. But then he said, "But we'll figure out a way to help Kong." He looked to Broly and said, "Won't we?"

Broly nodded and Cheelai remembered something. Looking to Marlow she asked him, "Back when we first met, the Iwis acted like Broly here…"

"Was some kind of foreseen savior." Marlow finished. Lemo then added, "Yeah, and you said that you'd explain what all that was about."

"Why don't you see for yourself?" Marlow asked while pointing to something behind them. The group turned as he said, "The Iwis hoisted this one into the air because it was even more special to them."

They all looked up to see another image made by the pieces of wood and saw that they made two images. One of the images was Kong as he looked on the image at the back of the room, but the other was of a being that looked like a man with spiky hair. As Broly looked at the image, his eyes widened when he saw that it indeed looked like him.

Elsewhere, Kong leapt onto the side of a mountain and started to climb up it. When he reached the top, the giant ape Titan looked around for any signs of trouble on the island. That's when he saw something in the distance. Using the mountains to travel, Kong quickly made his way to the place where he could sense the trouble. As he leapt from one cliff to another he left the place shaking. He landed to where he sensed the disturbance with a boom and looked up, but didn't like what he saw.

He looked down into a large vent as gas billowed out from it. Then looking to his left he saw a corpse of the giant water buffalo. He roared in anger when he saw what was eating from the body. A large lizard like creature with a skull for a head and two limbs looked up from its meal and saw Kong. Stepping over the dead water buffalo with a chitter, the Skullcrawler hissed while is served as a distraction. On the cliff face behind Kong, another Skullcrawler slinked out of hiding and waited for just the right moment. But Kong glanced back when he heard it hissing.

The Skullcrawler in front of Kong hissed again before taking a leap at Kong. But the giant ape grabbed onto it before throwing it at the other Skullcrawler. The second Skullcrawler jumped over the first and lunged at Kong. The ape Titan was prepared for it as he grabbed the smaller creature's skull before slamming it onto the ground. The first one tried to come in for another attack, but Kong back handed it in the face and wrapped his arm around it before grabbing the second one by the face with his free hand. He slammed the second one to the ground before slamming the first into its kin. The second one hissed before Kong smashed its skull underfoot. When neither of them moved again, Kong let loose a roar of victory.

Looking over the two bodies, Kong began to have a flashback about his youth and his parents.

(Flashback)

(Cue Paragus' Rage track from DBS Broly)

A younger Kong had a smile as he ran on all fours alongside his much larger parents through a valley. The bigger primates looked down to their son as they too had smiles on their faces. They ran through a field and were about to cross one of the island's rivers when they heard a horrible shriek.

Kong and his parents looked back to see an enormous silhouette appear on one of the cliffs. Both of Kong's parents furrowed their brows when they recognized the shape of the creature. Kong's mother told the young Titan to stay back as she and his father rushed at the large Skullcrawler. The serpentine Titan gave a hiss before leaping off the cliff as well. It made a leap at them before twisting its body and smacking the father's face with its tail. The male ape Titan fell to the ground while the female grabbed the Skullcrawler's leg and spun it around before smashing it into the ground. The smaller Titan used its free limb to kick Kong's mother in the gut. She let go of the foot and the Skullcrawler got up and tried to tackle into her, but her mate quickly grabbed it by the tail to stop its leap. The female ape Titan then got back up and started to bash her fists against the smaller creature's back. The Skullcrawler looked back to the other ape Titan before an idea came into its head.

Hunching its shoulders while taking a deep breath, the giant Skullcrawler let loose a screech that echoed across the island. Kong and his parents looked around as the sounds of many hisses filled the air, meaning that a multitude of them were on their way. Kong's father looked to his son and roared at the child to go and hide. Kong didn't want to leave his parents, but the stern yet caring look in his father's eyes told him to go.

Kong turned and ran up one of the many cliffs but stopped and turned around to watch. He could see the large number of smaller Skullcrawlers break from the tree line and ran straight for the two Ape Titans. But Kong wasn't too worried for his parents, for they had faced down a large number of these foul creatures before.

The smaller Skullcrawlers either made a leap or went for the legs of the bigger Titans. But Kong's parents were able to knock back or crush the scavengers that came at them. They kept at least one foot on the large Skullcrawler and would switch when they turned, but it was what the large one was hoping for. When the female turned to swat one of his kin, the large Skullcrawler made its move. Slipping its tail from underneath the male's foot, the large Skullcrawler used its shoulders to push the female's foot off. The male turned and looked in shock as his mate stumbled a little. She cried out in pain when a smaller Skullcrawler bit down on her arm. She was about to rip it off when the large Skullcrawler pounced on her and knocked her onto her back. The male tried to rush in and help but the Skullcrawler grabbed one of his leg with its tail and tripped him backwards. The male grunted when he fell on his back, but then started roaring in pain when the smaller Skullcrawlers started to attack him. The male ape Titan thrashed around as he fought back.

With one of the Ape Titans distracted, the Skullcrawler started to wrestle with the female as she tried to push the large scavenger off. But it grabbed her wrist with its jaws and started twisting. The female tried to pry the jaws off with her free hand but it was proving difficult when a few other smaller Skullcrawlers came in to help their leader. They bit with their jaws and clawed at her with one set of their claws, causing the female Ape Titan great pain. The large Skullcrawler finally released her arm before lunging for her throat. She tried to push it's snapping jaws away, but the pain from the smaller Skullcrawlers became too unbearable for her as her strength started to weaken. The large Skullcrawler quickly shoved her arm out of the away before lunging forward.

Kong watched in horror as the enemy Titan bit down on his mother's neck and could hear a sickening rip coming from the fight. Kong's father looked to his enemy and mate and his eyes widened at the sight of his mate in trouble. He became enraged as he used his primal strength to knock the other Skullcrawlers away. The larger Skullcrawler turned from his victory to see the other Ape Titan running at him. With a hiss it charged forward as well.

Kong hoped that his father would avenge his mother and defeat the Skullcrawler. The Skullcrawler leapt into the air but Kong's father balled his fists together and swung them into the large Skullcrawler. The blow knocked the scavenging Titan away and it tumbled along the ground before coming to a stop in the river. The other Skullcrawlers started to rush forward to attack the Ape Titan when the large Skullcrawler hissed for them to stop. Kong and his father watched as the other Skullcrawlers stopped in their tracks and chittered to one another. The bigger Skullcrawler rose to its feet and then roared at Kong's father who roared in return. Both Titans rushed forward to end the battle. Kong's father leapt into the air with his fists raised. The Skullcrawler jumped back as the fists came down and crashed into the ground. Before the Ape Titan could go after the Skullcrawler, the scavenging Titan rushed forward and scratched at his face with its clawed hands. Kong's father roared in pain before the Skullcrawler slammed its claws into the ape's gut. Kong's father fell on his back and grasped the appendage from going any deeper and quickly grabbed the Skullcrawler's throat with his back feet. With a quick motion, Kong's father quickly snapped the Skullcrawler's neck but in doing so made the other creature's claws go in a little deeper. The smaller Skullcrawlers quickly turned and ran from the battlefield since their leader had been defeated. Kong's father threw the Skullcrawler's corpse away and started to get back up. But when he turned to go and check on his mate, a set of claws wrapped around his throat before clawing it one fell swoop. Kong's father roared in pain before another large Skullcrawler shoved him to the ground.

Kong's father turned his head to the other Skullcrawler and his eyes widened at the size of it. This one was much larger than the one that he and his mate had fought. Kong's father fought to get up but the Skullcrawler quickly turned and swatted him with its tail. Kong's father tumbled along the ground before coming to a stop next to his mate. The female looked to the male as she could feel her life ebbing away and vice versa. They both placed their shaking hands together as they could feel that this was the end. Both of Kong's parents turned to their son's direction and gave him a smile that told him everything would be okay.

Kong gave a holler before the Skullcrawler roared at the two Apes. Kong's parents once again turned their heads together as they waited for the inevitable.

(End of track)

Kong was thankful that he had lived after that encounter as he continued to walk from where he had defeated the two Skullcrawlers. He placed a hand to his cheek as he thought about the small yet powerful creature he had fought earlier. The Ape Titan knew that if he had trouble with someone like that, then would he be able to defeat the other large Skullcrawler.

"So, Broly was prophesized to have come here?" Lemo asked in confusion. Cheelai placed a hand on the side of her head as she said, "I guess."

"And is that his Super Saiyan form?" Brooks asked taking a good look at the hair on the image. Everyone took another look at the mural and noticed that Broly's hair did stand up in the transformed state. Weaver then asked, "How did they know that he was coming?"

"They just saw it." Marlow shrugged and then said, "But all I really know is that he's meant to help Kong when the time comes."

Cheelai was about to ask another question when Broly cried out in pain, this time a little louder. They all looked to the Saiyan as he felt the wound on his leg start to pulse again.
