TW FOR DESCRIPTIONS OF DEATH AND INJURIES, GUNS, POLICE, MENTION OF CULTS
Blake's heartbeat roared in her ears, her hands steadily holding her gun at the ready as she rounded a corner.
"Vale Police Department, open up!" Her partner, Yang, called, knocking loudly on the hotel door.
Blake could smell the decay from where she stood.
When no one answered, Yang kicked in the door.
Blake cursed under her breath, moving to cover her nose.
Inside the walls were splattered with blood, the room frozen in a horrible scene. There was a girl, or at least, what Blake assumed to be a girl, sprawled out on the floor. She had been dead for a few days, her hollow eyes staring up at the ceiling. Her skin had begun to fall apart, turning awful shades of purple and red.
"I… I'm going to call back up." Yang said, her voice faint.
She mustered a nod, before inspecting the room. She could hear Yang outside, talking over the radio.
"Any visible injuries?" Yang called.
"Rope burn around her ankles and wrists, bruises consistent with self-defense, three stab wounds, and a nine-millimeter bullet wound to the stomach." She listed off. She brushed some of the hair from the girl's face and frowned. "Wait, there's something else. Behind her ear, there's a brand."
Yang came back into the room. "A brand? Here, let me take a look."
She went and crouched next to Blake, gasping quietly.
"Oh… Oh Blake, you don't think..?"
She gave her a grim nod.
Yang leaned into her radio. "Guys, this is a White Fang kill."
"Let me get this straight... The White Fang, a group of thugs, that took us years to get rid of, that you, Blake, were a part of… You're telling me that they've returned?"
Blake nodded. Her chief sat in front of her, pinching the bridge of his nose as he drew in a long breath.
"Chief Ozpin, they're more than just a group of thugs. They're smart, you know this. They're practically a cult." She said. "Their leader, Adam, they worship him."
"You had this same mentality at one point, yes?"
She nodded again.
"Do you think it's a good idea for you to be on this case?" He looked down at her through his olive tinted glasses.
"Yes! I am the most qualified to be on this case, I know how they work. If anyone can stop them, it's me."
Ozpin sighed. "You're personally invested in this. That can be a dangerous thing."
"I know, I know… Please, let me do this." She said, her voice wavering on begging.
"Fine. I'm putting Sun in charge of this case. If at any point that I deem you too reckless, too emotional for this, you are off the case. Do you understand, Blake?"
She nodded. "Thank you. I promise, I will get rid of them, once and for all."
"Don't make promises you cannot keep."
Velvet was finishing up the victim's autopsy when Blake came in.
"Any luck identifying her?" She asked.
Velvet nodded. "Octavia Ember. Went missing a few weeks ago." Her tone softened, as she frowned. "She was young, too."
"At least her suffering ended." Blake said quietly.
"That's awful."
"I know."
Velvet shook her head. "How could they do such a thing?"
"I don't know. I just know that they won't stop, not until they're gone." She said, sighing heavily.
"You can't stop them all on your own."
"I'll have help. Ozpin put me on a team."
"Be careful, okay Blake? You have to remember that you're on a team, that you can't do everything by yourself." Velvet said gently, taking Blake's hands in hers.
Blake looked away. "I can do this, Vel. I'll be fine."
She shrugged Velvet off and left.
She went up to Yang's desk, where the blonde was sitting.
"Hey." She said, sitting down on the edge of the desk.
"Hey." Yang glanced at Blake, her brows furrowed. "You doing okay?"
Blake shrugged, crossing her arms. "I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?"
"Would you tell me if you weren't?"
She frowned, looking down at the ground.
Yang sighed and stood up, pulling her into a gentle hug. "You don't have to do this, you know."
"I do. I have to stop them." She said quietly.
"You don't have to do this alone."
"I'm not alone. I have you." She looked up at her, as Yang cupped her cheek.
"Please, remember that you have me, that you can talk to me." She kissed Blake's forehead. "I'll be here to listen."
Blake nodded, as Yang pulled away.
"Now, I just have a little more paperwork, and then we can leave. You want to go get dinner somewhere?"
"No. Let's just go home, I'm not really hungry."
"Yeah, me neither." Yang sighed.
Ten minutes later, they left, heading to their shared apartment.
Ruby, Yang's younger sister, was waiting for them inside.
"Hey Rubes, what's up?" Yang asked as Blake took off her coat.
"Weiss's parents were coming over, so I had to leave." She said.
"Ugh, those assholes." Yang grumbled.
"Yeah. Can I crash at your place? Dad's busy with work."
"It's fine with me. What about you, Blake?" She asked.
"You can stay here." Blake said. "I'm going to go shower."
"Mind if I join you?" Yang asked.
"Gross, you two." Ruby said, wrinkling her nose.
Blake rolled her eyes. "And sure, Yang."
Ruby continued to tease them, as they headed to the bathroom.
Blake took off her uniform, as Yang brushed out her hair.
"You know, if you want to talk about what happened today, we can." Yang said softly.
Blake shook her head. "I think I'd rather take my mind off of it."
She nodded, going over to her. "Maybe cuddle up in bed, watch some movies?"
Blake managed a smile. "That sounds lovely."
"Let's go shower then."
Blake then took her hand, leading her over to the bathroom.
The two finished getting undressed, before getting in the shower.
Blake turned on the water, as Yang wrapped her arms around her from behind. She leaned against her, letting out a breath as the water ran down them. She relaxed in her hold, as steam filled the air.
"You're so tense, kitten." Yang said softly, as Blake grabbed the shampoo.
"Yeah, we have a tense job." She shrugged, as she began to wash Yang's hair.
"I know. Try to relax tonight, okay?"
She nodded, as Yang began to gently wash her.
Once they were done showering, they got out and dried off, getting ready for bed. They soon fell asleep, cuddled close to one another.
Blake woke up to the sound of steady breathing, warmth enveloping her. Her eyes fluttered open as she was met with Yang's sleeping form. She was wrapped up in her arms, their legs intertwined.
She smiled sleepily, leaning up and kissing her.
Yang awoke, as Blake pulled away.
"Morning, love." She yawned. "What time is it?"
She glanced back at the clock. "Nine thirty. We slept in."
She hummed. "No calls?"
Blake shook her head, as she sat up.
"Man, I'm hungry. Let's order something." Yang said.
She nodded.
The day went by slowly as the couple took a day of rest.
That night, Blake got a call.
It was Sun, his voice was panicked and rushed. "Blake! We need back up, we're held up at a warehouse, Neptune's shot."
Blake's eyes widened, as she gasped. "I need your location, I'll be there in ten minutes. Hang in there."
She quickly got dressed in her uniform and rushed off, gripping her steering wheel with white knuckles.
The night was eerily calm, the warehouse was still. Blake pulled out her gun and held it at the ready, as she slowly approached the warehouse.
She stopped for a second, listening closely. A gunshot rang through the air, causing Blake to wince. She ran in, looking around at her surroundings. Inside, there were multiple men with masks and suits, shouting and pointing guns. Neptune and Sun were hiding behind a box, Sun holding Neptune as he put pressure on his wound.
"Go, call back up, I'll take care of this." She said as Sun nodded.
He ran out, as she turned her attention to the men. After a headcount, she concluded there were only four of them.
"Put down your weapons and get on your knees!" She shouted.
One of the men began to laugh, as she pointed her gun at them.
A moment later, something hard and heavy hit the back of her head. She stumbled, turning to see someone standing behind her.
She gasped.
"Hello, my darling." Adam grinned down at her, holding a crowbar. He swung it again, and her world went black.
