Alphonce was feeling better and was happy to have someone to help him out. Not only did Shamus looked after Alphonce while the other bandmates settle on their work schedules, but they were surprise to see how quick Alphonce was attach to Shamus. The other band members of Gorillaz were okay having Shamus as a new roommate, he was a major improvement from Gregory and Alphonce would agree wholeheartedly. Yet when it came to Alphonce's bass lessons, he was quiet as a mouse during dinner, and when asked Alphonce just glares at Shamus. He would say nothing, but when his step-mother asks Alphonce again, he'd answers it's fine. Shamus would then agree with him that Alphonce was getting started on the right path. Alphonce rolled his eyes, like another eager student, Alphonce's expectations don't live up to his standards and he would often pout the rest of the night.

It seems that when it came to teaching Shamus was a lazy teacher. At first, he would take forever to wake up until Alphonce came and jump on him. After that Alphonce sits at the kitchen table, next to Shamus, and waits for him to finish his breakfast, but that only seems longer to Alphonce whenever Shamus talks to his step-mother. Luckily, Kim knew how important it was for Alphonce to get started his bass playing lessons and cut their conversations short. Alphonce then had to drag Shamus away from the kitchen and up the stairs straight to Alphonce's room.

Inside Alphonce's room, with the door open, Shamus would sit in his chair across from Alphonce's bed and listens to the young student as he tries to master a simple scale. This is would annoyed Alphonce often. Shamus would stop Alphonce in-between his scale practicing and then starts to lecture him on his posture. Shamus grabs Alphonce's El Diablo bass from his hands and how him how to properly hold it. Alphonce was annoyed, but before he was could start again, Shamus interrupts him again and calls for an early lunch. Again, Alphonce sits in his seat next to Shamus, eats his lunch, and wait for Shamus to finish his lunch and drink before Alphonce's step-mother appears to begin on making dinner.

After three longs weeks passed Alphonce finally finished playing the scales completely. Relief, he sighs, but Shamus just sat in his seat and didn't show any expression, "Not bad. You got over the first bump. You have talent, your posture is getting there, and I think…."

"That's it time I start playing Gorillaz songs like my dad?" Alphonce interrupts abruptly.

Shamus looks at him and sighs sadly, "No. You're still not there yet."

"What?!" Alphonce shouts, "But I'm the best. I'm the closest thing to a bass player for this band like my dad was! I'm going to become great like him. You're not teaching me anything! All day, every day, you've been interrupting me, pushing me, and I finally got through it..ONCE!"

"Look, I know what's best for you. So, you better listen to me." Shamus told him.

"Why should I?!" Alphonce's hair spiked up. His eyes turn red, but Shamus didn't flinch. He sat in his seat with his arms cross.

Alphonce's voice changed deeper, "I am the best! Who do you think you are?! My father?!"

The entire room started to shake, objects began to hover, but Shamus got up and looks down at the angry boy.

"Alphonce," Shamus spoke calmly. Alphonce growled and hisses at him. "If your father was standing in front of you, would you expect him to teach you a complex piece until your fingers blister and bleed and then cry about or would he help build your stamina first before you were ready to play your first piece?"

Alphonce answered, "My father was the best and he wouldn't."

"I'm not asking about your father!" Shamus exclaims, "I'm asking would you want him to train you to be strong instead of training you to play like an amateur!"

Alphonce blinked, his eyes return to normal, but he kept his head down to the wooden floor. Shamus look at the small boy, he continues, "Music isn't just a hobby. Anyone can play a simple song and say it's like the original, but it's not. He didn't want to sound the same, he wanted to play his way, and he did his way through hard work without anyone helping him."

Alphonce's body began to shake, the room was starting to shake a bit, but stop when Shamus added, "But he tried it your way, his fingers were cut badly and, he had to quit to stop the bleeding. That held him back, he almost wanted to quit, thinking it wasn't worth the pain, but he knew another type of pain, being another copycat. For hours he spent listening and watching Black Sabbath and several other bands. Training his hearing to learn what note was being played and watching them how each musician held their instruments. From that day on he knew he wanted to play better than them. He'd want you to try to play better than him, not to become carbon copy of him. You might be his son, but it's your skills that needs to be hear first."

The room stops shaking. Objects place back on the shelves. Alphonce started to cry. Shamus got down on his knees.

"I just want to be like him. I miss him a lot. This band was very important to him, Aunt Noodle, Uncles Russel and 2D. They had to stop playing and can't find time to practice no more. I thought if I could play the same songs, they could go back performing for their fans, and I could make dad proud of me." Alphonce spoke softly, his voice returning normal.

Alphonce cried, Shamus held him close to him, he petted Alphonce's head, and asked, "Then what's stopping you?"

Alphonces' eyes shot open. He clings to Shamus' shirt. Alphonce's answer, "It's just that, I want to help. I just want to be with him and playing his music helps me to know he's there."

Shamus smiled and told Alphonce, "Your, dad is with you and he'd want you to try your best, but you need to be you first because he knows you're going to be great someday and that'll be the proudest moment where your dad will be with you."

Shamus wipes the tears from Alphonce's eyes. He smiles at him. Alphonce smiles back. Alphonce pick up the El Diablo and asks, "So how can I be better?"

"Well I could show you how to handle your bass and show you why it's important you keep your back straight and your arms relax." Shamus suggested.

Alphonce slowly hands over the El Diablo to him. He sits on Shamus's seat as he sat on Alphonce's bed and show him how to properly handle the bass guitar. Hanging over Alphonce's bed was a poster of his father, Murdoc Niccals, playing his bass, and seeing it Alphonce quickly notices that Shamus was in the same position as his father. Shamus demonstrated his skills by playing 'Feel Good Inc.'

"If you're tense up here, your hands will cramp, your arms will stiffen, and your back will try to straighten if you stay for too long in a hunch position. Keep it straight, relax your arms, and it'll make your hands easier to move. Just handle the neck like this and remember, it's a bass guitar, you strum a few strings, like you're not even trying to play." He continues to explain.

Alphonce nodded and listens to Shamus to play. He stares in amazement. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. Alphonce watch and listens to him play. Alphonce could recognize how and when it was his father's turn to play, whenever he listens to a Gorillaz album, but when Shamus started to play every note, matches to the way his father had played. Alphonce stares amazed at this person, a stranger he met days ago, a stranger who he calls his teacher sitting in his room, and as he continues to watch Shamus playing on the bass, Alphonce's mouth turns into a bright smile.
