Our Future
Set sometime after New Moon if it happened, Beau is still human, a newborn army is in the future ahead. Beau has come to a big decision about his future as a mortal and spending eternity with Edythe.
It wasn't often Beau woke up and was graced with the clock saying it was well past nine-thirty in the morning. Good thing it was at Saturday at least.
With a groan, he slowly rolled over, tired from work and he had to stay up later than usual just to finish an essay due on Monday, so now he didn't have to stress over that for the weekend. He could chill and relax and these days, that was few and far between.
His hands hit the wall as he stretched awkwardly on the bed, a loud and high-pitched yawn escaping and he couldn't be bothered to be embarrassed. It wasn't lost on him that Edythe wasn't in his room but he could hear some rummaging around in the kitchen and since Charlie was out for work at the station, that only left Edythe.
Smilingly lightly, he pulled on a jumper since it was quite fresh at the moment, grateful for the socks he was wearing and trudged down the stairs, another massive yawn escaping him as he scratched his head and back. Beau only perked up when the music reached into his sluggish mind and he raised a brow at the familiar song.
"Haven't heard this one for a while,"
"Didn't mean to bleed
Just trickin with you
And I don't mean to do
What I do when I do and I
Didn't need to let go of ya here
But I am what I ammmwuh"
He had listened to many songs in his childhood with his mum, cooking and cleaning with her around their home in Phoenix. My Heart is a wheel by Megan Washington was old time favourite and repeat that he had been subjected to. But he could hear the tones of Edythe's voice as she sang along and there was no way he was missing this. Turning the corner, he was subjected to an even more lovely view that he didn't often really see.
"My heart is a wheel, is a wheel is a wheel is a wheel is a, when it tips it turns. Heart is a wheel. I can't stop. Gotta go gotta go wah, someone's gonna get hurt. Got a heart like a wheel." Edythe stood on the other side of the kitchen counter, in the kitchen, stirring a pan with some eggs and flitting back and forth between the fridge and the stove. Swaying along with the music, her hair undone from her usual ponytail and swaying around wildly behind her as she twisted and turned, hips swaying purposefully with the music.
"You gotta you gotta you gotta know, I do what I do, Coz I don't want it done, and I can't help, If I hurt somebody, it's just how I feel. My heart is a wheel." She spun around, singing her heart out in a way Beau had never seen her act before, and was more than content to just lean against the doorway, watching her sing and dance and cook in his kitchen.
He smiled lovingly at his girlfriend, and couldn't help wonder how he got so lucky to have her in his life. And it was nice…nice seeing her in moments where she let loose and was relaxed a little. As the song came to finish, she spun around facing him, the next song playing on her phone and she was lip-syncing the words while she plated the eggs on a plate with some bacon and piece of slightly burnt toast. A cheeky grin on her face as she glanced at him, hips swaying quickly to the beat of the music. Beau moved from his position away from the door and coming around the counter into the kitchen he wrapped his arms around Edythe's slender waist from behind and buried his face in her shoulder and hair, breathing in her sweet scent.
"Morning sunshine." Edythe chirped, leaning back into him with a content sigh. "You're not one for a sleep in." She turned to face him, her smile dimming lightly as she raised a hand to cheek, finger tracing under his eyes. "You're more tired than you let on, Beau."
Beau shrugged, leaning in to kiss her forehead.
"I won't deny I'm tired. I had that blasted English essay to finish up. And I'd rather get it out of the way." She frowned slightly.
"I could've helped if you needed it." Beau shook his head, rubbing her back slowly.
"I didn't need the help doing it. I just wanted to finish it and get it out of the way."
"If you say so Beau," Realizing the food on the island counter, she slipped out of his grasp and held up the plate of food for him. "Eat up, it's late for you to eat and you need all the strength you'll need to finish your other essays." With a breathy chuckle, Beau took the plate from her and leaned down to kiss her forehead, tilting her face up by her chin and catching her lips in a soft, grazing kiss that has his heart stuttering in his chest.
Edythe giggled quietly against his lips and he blushed furiously as he pulled away, pinching her nose lightly which made her laugh out loud as he walked around her and sit at the table and eat in peace. Edythe resumed her way through the kitchen, cleaning up and putting ingredients away and even taking out the rubbish and he smiled slightly at the sight.
The thought graced his head, a kitchen, different from the current one they were in, but standing side by side, washing dishes, cooking dinner…for one, laughing and kissing, distracting each other and lost in their own world.
"You're in another world, Beau." He blinked back to the present and glancing up quickly to see Edythe standing beside him watching him carefully, slight worry in her expression. "You okay?"
"Uh, yeah," He glanced down at his plate and seeing it empty, he stood up taking his empty plate to the kitchen and loading it in the dishwasher, all the while he could feel Edythe glancing at him as she opened the cupboards and took out the dishwashing liquid and powder.
This was not just a fantasy, a dream he was thinking of. It was a reality he liked amongst a lot more. He glanced at Edythe standing next to him, putting some dirty dishes away and then straightening up before noticing him watching her. Her brow raised curiously and he wasn't sure what expression was on his face but Edythe's expression was stunning. She looked bashful but at the same time relaxed and content under his gaze, her ochre eyes burning intensely back at his.
He didn't think, he just closed the dishwasher out of the way and standing right in front of her, he placed his hands on her hips and picked her up which was surprisingly easy since she was tiny and so light in his arms and sat her on the counter. Her stunned expression lasted only a second until he leaned in, his hands buried in her hair at the back of her head, his lips on hers and a gasp just escaping her before she lost herself in Beau's embrace.
Her taste, her smell, her skin and her closeness and openness surrounded Beau like a homey, warm and seductive blanket. He did take care to not push it but the intensity as he held her, his lips upon hers, his hands tangling themselves in her thick, silky curls drove him wild in a way he had never been before. He could feel her small hands sliding up his chest, one tracing themselves behind his neck so gently, her cool fingers sliding into the curls on the back of his neck, the other hand gripping the collar of his jumper as she retuned the intensity in which he was kissing her. Leaving one hand desperately gripping the back of her head, the other hand resting on her lower back, but not too far down to at least keep his hands to himself in a manner of speaking. He moved in closer, vaguely aware her legs had parted, giving Beau more room to shuffle closer to her so their fronts were pressed right against one another. His skin seemed to burn under her touch, he could feel his heart thundering in his chest but there was a calmness that took over and he reached for her more and more, needing her like he needed air.
Her sighs against him, the cool breath brushing against his cheek, he glided his lips away from hers, giving her the break, she needed at the always close proximity of his scent and flesh. But he couldn't bring himself to completely remove himself from her, his lips tracing down her jaw, to the skin under her ear, his hand pushing her hair aside so it was just her cool, marble skin under his lips. Her hands grasped desperately at his jumper, the quivering whimpers of her voice making him sigh.
"Beau, what…aahh…" She sighed breathily, as his lips ran down to her neck, tracing and loving the graceful curve of her neck, his other hand laid against her cheek, he could feel her trembling under his ministrations and he had been almost expecting her to push him away but she hadn't.
It didn't mean he wasn't planning on pushing her too far.
With a shaky moan, and uttering of her name, he laid one more kiss on the curve of her shoulder where it met her neck before raising his head and leaning his forehead against hers, breathing hard much like she was, even though she had no need for air. He opened his eyes to meet hers which were dazed, brighter than usual and smouldering as she stared back at him.
"Where, um," Edythe breathed, smiling bashfully. "Where did that come from?"
He stared at her silently, contemplating what to say.
Edythe Cullen was his girlfriend, his soul mate, his future, his best friend, his confidant, his partner, his protector and he hoped in a way she saw him as her protector. Watching her in his kitchen, seeing the domestic way she had learned just to help out and fit in more, even though she didn't need to, only made him love her more. But it was more than just loving her. It was him as well.
A plan, an idea that had come by some bit ago that he didn't give much thought until only a few weeks ago and only grew and grew especially with graduation coming soon. Now the idea was hope, a bigger plan and part of a future before he embarked on eternity with Edythe.
He wasn't sure how to broach it, but he knew Edythe would be pleased at his choice but it was more than just him waiting. He wanted an experience as human, but he wanted her to be there as he lived before, he embarked on what he truly wanted with her in the end.
He had spoke to most of the Cullen's out of Edythe's ear shot. Archie hadn't been surprised but he didn't seem to mind at all, probably having seen everything Beau had in mind for the future and only said he would keep it to himself no matter what.
It was Royal he had confided in and he had been the most helpful though brutally honest.
"After everything you've said and done, you want to stay mortal longer?" Royal pulled himself out under the red convertible, grease marks staining his face and shirt as his eyes stared at Beau hard.
"I still want immortality with Edythe, but she is right and you are too. I need to experience life a little more."
"Well, that's better than nothing." Royal sighed, looking a little more relaxed until he turned sharply to Beau, his eyes narrowed and almost black as he spoke deathly quiet. "I do hope this means you're not planning on ditching Edythe then?" Beau glared back, keeping his gaze on Royals.
"No. I have no intention of ever leaving Edythe. She's everything to me. I just want a more human experience before I move on. And I want that with Edythe. I only wanted to tell you Royal, not just because you were right but because it doesn't matter. I need this as much as I need Edythe and I've got plans I want to make, while mortal."
Royal had been the most pleased over this, though Beau hardly doubted they'd be best buddies after this. Maybe in another decade or two who knows.
Looking back at Edythe, he shouldered himself up and with a sigh, lowered his hands to rest on her waist.
"I need to talk to you. About our future." Edythe blinked in surprise but nodded, sitting comfortably on the counter before Beau gave her a comforting smile. "You're right, Edythe. About choosing my life carefully." She looked still confused but didn't say anything. "You've said, Julie's said it, even Royal has said it. Immortality is not something to be taken lightly and I haven't been taking it in properly. All I've been thinking about is eternity with you and Edythe, that is what I want. An eternity to walk beside you, hold you, love you, laugh with you, protect you no matter what."
"That's why, I've decided, I want to stay human a little longer."
Edythe blinked slowly once, then twice then third, obvious surprise on her face as she leaned back to stare at him, her eyes on his, reading him and taking in everything.
"You'll wait?" Edythe breathed, her voice hopeful with a faltering twinge. The worry was a quick flicker in her expression.
"I want to stay mortal a little longer. But it's not just because, this is a serious change. It's also, I'm not ready to say goodbye to Charlie, my mum, Julie and the things I can do while mortal. But the other reason is why," He hesitated, raising a hand to caress her cheek while she waited patiently, her eyes bright and intense. "Why I've been so intent on watching you today and the last few days. There's something I want with you."
"The say it Beau and it'll be yours. I promise." Edythe clasped his hand on her cheek, smiling softly, her expression gently and open and Beau returned the expression.
"It's not something like a wish, and what I need I have already with you. But I want us to experience life together." She looked surprised and taken aback from that but he continued to press on. "I want us to graduate at Forks High together. And go to the party Archie is holding at yours, and I want to hold you close and tight while we dance and laugh, drink – well, I'll eat and drink," Edythe laughed and he grinned back.
"You don't like dancing though." Beau grinned cheekily.
"I'll do it with you no matter what." He raised a pinky to her and she raised a brow before curling her pinky around his. "I'm your partner and you're my partner, Edythe." He kissed their interlocked pinkies.
"And after the party, we are gonna deal with the fight with the newborns, you and everyone else are going to survive. I have no doubts on that." Edythe's expression faltered, but he pressed on, refusing to let her get distracted with dark thoughts. "And we are going to go to Dartmouth together, college together. And we, we are gonna find an apartment, a place of our own," Her eyes flashed up to his shocked. "Just you and me. A place of our own to call home for the time being. We are gonna study separate degrees. Me with English and you with medicine. We may not see each much during the days but sometimes we'll find each other in the library and we'll study together and go home together."
"Or we'll find each other at home and we'll talk about our days, holding each other, laughing and catching up." Edythe smiled softly, a shaky breath escaping her but Beau was on a roll, his own eyes stinging, his voice husky and faltering as he continued on because with every action he described, he could see it so clearly and he wanted it so badly and form Edythe's expression, she felt the same. "We'll make dinner together or maybe I'll be cheeky and watch you spoil me by making me dinner." Edythe giggled at his cheeky smirk.
"We'll study together in the living room afterwards, helping each other out and then we'll sit back and watch movies together well into the night despite us having an early class. But it'll be a familiar routine and we live our lives together and our own path. And then one day, I'll look at you and realize this is it. Now is the time." Taking a deep breath, he reached for her hands folded primly on her lap and held them in his, bringing one hand up and twining his fingers with hers. "The moment will come, and I will get down on one knee before you," Edythe gasp quietly but he gripped her hand tighter, nervously continuing on. "And I'll hand out a ring that I know will suit you better than it could anyone else and ask you a very important question. I know your answer and I'll cry with joy and never let you go. And then I'm gonna marry you in a ceremony of yours and Archie's making because we all know you couldn't do anything without Archie getting involved." A choked laugh escaped Edythe, as her hands shook in his, hunching over laying her head on his chest. "And then I'll be ready Edythe. To move into eternity with you."
Edythe raised her head to meet his gaze, her golden eyes burning with emotion and lips parted and she looked so perfect to him that he wanted nothing more than to kiss her just as he did mere minutes ago.
"I love you, Edy-Mph" He gasped against her lips as she jumped him, wrapping her arms around his neck and shoulders lightly, jumping into his arms which he wrapped them around her waist and held her tightly to him. Her lips moved with his intense and the emotions behind the force of her kisses spurred him on and he buried a hand in her hair and the other wrapped tightly around her waist as he held her up, her feet hanging off the floor.
"Beau," She gasped, pulling back slightly. She met his gaze evenly and a smile so stunning and warm-hearting he could pass out right then and there. "I love our future."
Beau grinned back and wrapped both arms around her, lifting her higher off the ground and spinning her around while she squealed in delight, clinging to him with pure and utter joy.
Their future was a way off and there were dark moments ahead of them, but nothing would stop them from reaching that future together.
