When Naofumi ran away from home, he left a note for his little brother.
Dear Brother,
I'm sorry but... I just can't take it anymore. It's obvious that I'm not wanted in this house nor do I have a place here. I'm probably gone by now, but don't worry about me. You're the favorite. I'll sure you'll be fine without me there. And don't try to find me either... I probably won't ever come back to this house again.
Again. Sorry, little brother...but maybe we'll see each other again someday. I love you. Goodbye.
- Iwatani Naofumi
Later...
When Naofumi was reading in the library on his day off work, he got himself summoned.
When talking to the other heroes, he says that he's been on the streets for a while before finding himself a place. That he ran away from home.
Itsuki really wanted to ask why, but he keeps his mouth shut. He doesn't want to pry or make Naofumi uncomfortable.
Naofumi does mention he got a job in a pro gaming club as a guild leader. He's super happy about that.
'Lucky...' the others think jealousy before asking him about pro gaming.
They get along pretty well after that.
When the trial happens, Naofumi says, "I didn't do it. I was too busy trying to learn how to survive in this world to think of anything else."
He gets pity from the other heroes, and they decide to believe him. Much to the dismay of Trash King and Bitch.
He picks up other runaways along the way while utilizing his knowledge on gaming.
When he meets L'Arc, he's as cautious as a cat, but L'Arc being L'Arc, he melts his heart a little.
When Naofumi is betrayed by L'Arc, he says, "I'm only protecting what I want to. I could care less about this world much less my own."
That surprised L'Arc, who kidnaps him on the spot.
They negotiate, and both agree to try to save both worlds.
L'Arc does, however, kiss Naofumi, who accepts him as his boyfriend.
