At Ponyville School, the Cutie Mark Crusaders along with the other kids were waiting for Miss Cheerilee to dismiss them for the day.
"Now class before I dismiss you for the day, I have an announcement to make." Miss Cheerilee told them.
The foals quieted down, and listened.
"This morning, I was informed by Mayor Mare that Ponyville will be holding a scooter race."
That got Scootaloo's attention.
"If you want to sign up for it, go to town hall and ask tell Mayor Mare. The top three winners will receive prizes."
Then the bell rang, and Miss Cheerilee dismissed them. As the foals left, Scootaloo spoke to her friends.
"Guys, we need to get to town hall." she informed.
"We had a feeling you'd want to sign up." Apple Bloom replied.
"Let's go then." added Sweetie Belle.
And the three fillies hurried into town.
Once they were at town hall, Scootaloo talked with Mayor Mare, and got signed up for the race.
"Can't wait to see you there, Scootaloo. Remember it's in two weeks." Mayor Mare told her.
"Can't wait to be in it." Scootaloo told her back.
Then she went back to her friends.
"Well I'm all signed up."
"I just know you're going to win, Scootaloo." Sweetie Belle told her.
"I don't know, ponies of all ages will be in this thing." Apple Bloom pointed out.
"That just means I've got to train hard, and up my game." Scootaloo replied.
She was already pretty fast on her scooter, all she had to do was practice.
And that's what she did. The following morning, she got up early and rode her scooter around her house.
"And that's ten laps." she said, getting off her scooter.
"Well look who's up early." said a voice.
Scootaloo looked up, and saw Rainbow Dash coming in for a landing.
"Hi, Rainbow Dash." Scootaloo greeted, and hugged her.
"I take it you're practicing for the town's scooter race."
"You got that right."
"Well good for you. If you train hard, you could do great."
"Will you be there?" Scootaloo wondered.
"You bet. Just keep practicing." Rainbow Dash told her.
"Scootaloo, time for breakfast." called her mom from the house.
"You better get in there. I'll see you later." Rainbow Dash said, and she flew off.
"Bye Rainbow Dash." Scootaloo called, and she went inside.
Later that day at school Scootaloo was desperately waiting for recess. She had rode her scooter to school, so she would be able to practice at school.
"How much longer till recess?" she whispered to Apple Bloom.
"We gotta finish this math lesson first." Apple Bloom whispered back.
She quietly groaned. Finally the math lesson was done, and Miss Cheerilee dismissed the foals for lunch and recess.
"Finally, I thought class would never be over." Scootaloo said, as they went outside.
"Now you can practice, we'll time you." Sweetie Belle told her.
And that's what they did. Scootaloo rode on scooter, dodging rocks, other foals, and playground equipment.
"You're doing great, Scootaloo." cheered Apple Bloom.
"Keep on going." added Sweetie Belle.
Scootaloo then scooted up to them, and got off her scooter.
"How did I do?" she asked Sweetie Belle.
"You did ten laps in twelve minutes."
"Awesome!" Scootaloo cheered.
Then the bell rang for lunch. Scootaloo was a little annoyed, she'd rather keep practicing.
The following morning after Scootaloo finished training she went inside to eat breakfast. Her mom served her some oats and a muffin, and a glass of juice. Then Scootaloo got an idea, she stuffed the oats and muffin in her saddlebag, and just drunk the juice.
"All done, Mom." she informed.
"Wow, you must've been hungry." said Mane Allgood.
"Yeah, well I better get off to school."
"Have a nice day, sweetie."
And Scootaloo got on her scooter, and rode off to school. On the way she gave the oats to some forest animals, and decided to give the muffin to some other foal at school. When he got to school, she met up with Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle.
"Hey, girls." she greeted.
"Morning, Scootaloo. Ready for school?" asked Apple Bloom.
"Yeah, oh by the way. I have an extra muffin from breakfast? Either of you want it?"
"I'll take it." Sweetie Belle piped up.
And she gave the muffin to her friend.
School went on as normal, with the exception of Scootaloo's stomach rumbling. Finally recess came, and Scootaloo was looking forward to practicing more on her scooter. And she did go faster than usual.
"Gee Scootaloo, you're getting better." Sweetie Belle complimented.
"Thanks, been practicing." Scootaloo replied.
Then the lunch bell rang, and the foals headed inside. As the others pulled out their lunches, Scootaloo didn't.
"Miss Cheerilee, is it okay if I spend lunch practicing on my scooter for the race?" she asked.
"You don't want to eat any lunch?" Miss Cheerilee wondered.
"I...had a big breakfast."
"Well all right then, I'll call you back in when lunch is over."
"Thank you."
And she hurried back outside.
As the days went by, Scootaloo kept skipping meals. She only drank juice at breakfast, and skipped lunch at school. But the effects of that was starting to take its' toll on her. She began getting tired more easily and she got a little irritable.
Being the good friends they were, Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle began taking notice. Before Scootaloo arrived at school, the two talked about the situation.
"I really think something's wrong with her." Apple Bloom told her.
"Yeah, we've gotta find out what's going on with her." Sweetie Belle agreed.
"But she ain't just going to tell us."
"We'll just have to be sneaky."
"Hey, guys." called a voice.
They saw Scootaloo scootering up to them.
"Oh, hey Scootaloo. What's up?" asked Apple Bloom.
"Nothing much, I did my practice laps this morning."
"Uh huh." they both replied.
In class, the two kept an eye on Scootaloo. She didn't seem to be paying that much attention, because she looked tired. And they noticed a small sound, it was coming from Scootaloo's stomach.
It was clear that Scootaloo hadn't eaten breakfast. And at lunch she didn't eat, she just wanted to practice her scooter. It was clear something had to be done. So at the end of the school, they went up to Scootaloo before she left.
"Uh, Scootaloo, we gotta ask you something." Apple Bloom told her.
"What is it? I gotta go." Scootaloo asked.
"We've been wondering, have you been eating lately?" Sweetie Belle questioned.
"I don't see how that's any of your business."
"It's just that, we've noticed you've been acting weird lately."
"Weird, I'm not acting weird, I'm just busy training. And I've gotta go." And she scootered off.
Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle looked at each other. It was clear, that Scootaloo had a problem. But she wasn't going to listen to just them, they needed extra help. So they went into town, and looked for Rainbow Dash.
And they found her flying over the town.
"Rainbow Dash." they called.
When Rainbow Dash noticed them, she flew down.
"What's up guys?"
"Scootaloo's got a problem." said Sweetie Belle.
"What kind of problem is she okay?" wondered Rainbow Dash.
"She's doing something along with her training, or should I say not doing something." Apple Bloom told her.
"Oh?" Rainbow Dash questioned.
Later that day, Scootaloo made her way to the clubhouse, a message had been sent to her telling her to come there.
"I wonder what Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle want?" she thought.
When she got there, she went inside, and saw her friends standing there with Rainbow Dash.
"What's going on?"
"Your friends told me that you've been cutting out some meals." Rainbow Dash informed.
Scootaloo looked at Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle who had shrugged.
"Well it's no big deal, it's just until the race is over." Scootaloo told her.
"Scootaloo, how long have you been doing this?"
"A few days."
The three were shocked.
"Scootaloo what you're doing is really dangerous. By not eating you're hurting your body."
"I just thought I'd be able to be better if I didn't eat as much."
"That's not how you get better at something. Besides if you don't eat, your body begins to break down."
That startled Scootaloo.
"Seriously?"
"Yes, and how do you expect to do better if your fuel tank is empty?"
"I...guess I can't."
"So are you going to start eating right again?" Rainbow Dash wanted to know.
Scootaloo looked at Rainbow Dash and then at her best friends.
"Okay, I will. I promise." Scootaloo told then sincerely.
"Great, now what do you say we all go out for some hayburgers?" Rainbow Dash suggested.
"Yeah." the girls cheered.
"Could I get mine with extra hay?" Scootaloo requested.
"(Chuckles), sure."
From that day on, Scootaloo began eating breakfast and lunch again. And she realized she was doing better with her training when she'd had a good meal. Then on the morning of the race, Scootaloo had a good breakfast of oatmeal and milk.
"So you ready to race, sweetie?" asked Snap Shutter.
"You bet." "Then let's get going." declared Mane Allgood.
And they went into town, and saw everypony was there. Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, and Rainbow were there to cheer her on.
"All right contestants for the race, line up at the starting line." Mayor Mare announced.
"Good luck, Scootaloo." called Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle.
"You got this, squirt." Rainbow Dash cheered.
"We'll see at the finish line." Snap Shutter told her.
"Thanks." Scootaloo said.
She lined up with the rest of the contestants, and with a wave of the flag, the racers were off. Scootaloo was fast, and managed to zig zag between the other racers. After an hour, ponies began crossing the finish line.
Scootaloo managed to come in third. Once everypony was done, Mayor Mare handed out the prizes, the 1st place winner got the trophy and the 150 bits, the 2nd placer got a medal and 100 bits, and Scootaloo got a ribbon, and 50 bits.
"Congratulations Scootaloo." Mayor Mare told her.
"Thanks."
"You did great, sweetheart." Mane Allgood told her.
"We're so proud." added Snap Shutter.
"You did great, Scootaloo." Apple Bloom said.
"You were really fast." added Sweetie Belle.
"Thanks everyone, it was really fun."
"You were really good out there, kid." Rainbow Dash told her.
"I have to thank you guys." Scootaloo told the three.
"You helped me realize my mistake, and I wouldn't have come in the place I did without you."
"It was no problem." Sweetie Belle replied.
"You're our friend, and that's what friends do." mentioned Apple Bloom.
"And plus, it's a big sister's job to look after their little sister." Rainbow Dash informed her.
