Chapter 12:

"My point was that if we had all gone together and worked as a team we wouldn't have an limp body on our hands!" Jess continued angrily at the child of Zeus

"And if you were actually effective against the wild centaurs, we also might not have a limp body on our hands!" Bri shouted back

"Guys, maybe we could try and remedy the limp body rather than argue over it?" Caleb suggested, holding his hands out both placatingly, and in case one of the feuding demigods hit him.

Jo looked up at her brother. "Oh, I'm soooo sorry! I know I'm supposed to be able heal people, but you could give me a few minutes to figure out how to do that!"

"Jo, I wasn't accusing you-"

"It sure sounded like it. Just because my godly dad is capable of healing people with a single touch doesn't mean I'm any good at it yet."

"That's obvious." Bri sniffed. "Just work some Apollo magic on Ian and make him up!"

"What do you want me to do, shoot an arrow at him?"

"If it'll help!"

"At least she's trying to help!" Jess went on. "Unlike you!"

"I don't think electrocuting him is going to do him any good."

"Yeah…" the son of Dionysus groaned. "Neither is all the yelling…."

The four other heroes all jumped. "Ian! You're awake, man!" Caleb restarted the conversation after the initial shock.

"Good." Bri punched him in the arm. "He can explain what the hell he did to the centaurs."

The camp was quiet for a few moments. Jess could hear the cicadas beginning to buzz. After Ian had done something to the centaurs, he'd passed out. The remaining four demigods had hauled him and their supplies to a small forest just outside Indianapolis, where they set up camp, and attempted to do something to help Ian.

Some firewood sat in a small pit Caleb had dug out, unlit. Five one-man tents stood in a half circle. Ian had been dragged into one of them, while Jess and Bri argued near the abandoned fire. Caleb sat in the opening of his own tent, attempting to stay out of the argument, while Jo crouched next to Ian, doing her best to wake him up, or force feed him some ambrosia.

At this point, however, Bri had dragged the son of Dionysus out. Jo crawled out of the tent, and joined the circle of people standing over Ian. Both Bri and Jess had their arms crossed, with looks of fury on their faces. Jo seemed more exasperated than anything, while Caleb mostly looked uncomfortable.

"What do you mean?" Ian muttered

"I mean," Bri said, the annoyance obvious in their tone. "What did he do to the centaurs?"

"I...I don't know. It was just instinct. There were five centaurs on top of me, all about to take me down, and I just had a gut feeling."

"You yelled." Caleb observed. "And the centaurs went crazy."

"Is that what happened?" Ian asked

"Interesting." a new voice came from behind them. It was female, and had musical undertones. "It sounds to me as though you have some power from Pan. But you don't really look like a satyr."

All of the demigods of the prophecy tensed. Bri and Caleb reached for weapons that weren't there, while Jo began to reach for her bow, but another voice came from behind. This one was male.

"I wouldn't. You won't have time to draw an arrow, much less fire. And you can take your hands off of your daggers."

The last comment was directed towards Jess, who did have her knives on her belt, but had been waiting to draw them.

"Who are you, and what do you want?" Ian asked. He had the advantage on his comrades. While they all stood in a semi-circle around him with their backs to the strangers, he was able to see them. He didn't suppose they would like to see they had been ambushed by a little old man, and old lady.

"Better question." the woman said. "Who are you, and why are you here?"

"We're just trying to get to the Waystation." he responded.

"The Waystation?" the man asked cautiously. "What exactly do you want in the Waystation?"

"We're looking for Leo Valdez and Calypso. The prophecy said they would help us."

"Dios amigo, why didn't you say so? I'm Leo Valdez, and this is Calypso. But now we need to know your names."

"Can we turn around now?" Bri asked, with irritation beyond anything Ian had heard before, and they had been annoyed almost the whole trip.

"Slowly. And keep your hands away from the knives." the woman replied.

"I'm Bri, child of Zeus. This is-"

"Jess Tewers, daughter of Nemesis." she interrupted.

The Lynks and Ian introduced themselves in turn.

"Fine. Annabeth sent a message that we might have some guests. We'll take you to the Waystation. And offer some serious advice on not making yourselves obvious to anyone who might want to kill you. Like monsters."

The five half-bloods of the prophecy broke camp, and followed the older heroes. Jess was thoroughly embarrassed.

The old man, for one thing, was about her height. And while she was tall, she wasn't that tall. He had curly hair that had gone grey. He had on grease stained jeans and white shirt that was just stained in general, paired with suspenders. The suspenders made him look grandfatherly, but he wore them with such ease, and they were worn so thin, it made her think he had worn them most of his life. Besides that, he had on a tool belt. What was really infuriating was that he didn't even carry a weapon, which made their defeat even more shameful. Yikes.

The woman was much taller than the man, who Jess assumed was her husband. Unlike the man, her hair had gone pure white and not grey in her old age. It was pulled into a braid that fell over her shoulder. She wore jeans as well, with a black t-shirt and a buffalo check jacket. There was one small knife in a sheath on her thigh, but otherwise she was completely unarmed as well. It was frustrating is what it was.

Upon reaching a door, Calypso pushed it open for them and smiled. "Welcome to our home-the Waystation."

Author's Note:

I'll freely admit how much I love Leo and Calypso together. Of course they were going to make any appearance!

It isn't Saturday-update day, but I'm busy all of tomorrow, so it's a few hours early. Maybe it's Saturday-update day already where you are. I dunno. Just so it's clear-this is your weekly update. I'm being redundant.

To StreetWeakness: I'll keep that in mind. You can tell this one was supposed to be mostly from Jess' perspective, give the way it started, and ended. But in the middle, it kept slipping towards Ian, so eventually I just sort of let it. I'll try that next chapter, thanks for the advice! :)

To Guest: (commented on chapter 9) Aaaaawwww, thank you so much!
