Edward II of England planned to set out into battle, but his wife, Alice, was pregnant and was about to give birth, so he had to stay. He waited outside their chambers as the midwife came over to him.
"My King, you now have a beautiful baby girl."
"That's wonderful!" said Edward.
"But I'm afraid your wife will not make it." said the midwife.
"WHAT?!"
"She's very ill. You may see her now if you wish to say goodbye."
Edward ran into the room as Alice lay in bed, pale and dying. One of the nurses held the baby for them. Edward smiled a little seeing the baby, but his happiness didn't last long as he went over to Alice.
"Alice, please don't die."
"I'm sorry, Edward, but it's my time." said Alice.
"But what about the baby?" asked Edward, "She would have no mother."
"Take care of her for me." said Alice, "And remember I'll always love you."
As Alice slipped away, Edward held her body, crying.
