The Getaway Gang

"Do you ever wonder why there's so many of us, spades?"

"Not really" He replied "Honestly, I've just kinda accepted that every so often, a new version of us will just turn up outta nowhere." Spades pulled his legs onto the rickety desk with little effort. He shot a look into his mug, where the luke-warm coffee had changed from a creamy chocolate brown into a murky grey. The sun shone through the gaps in the blinds. The dust was visible in the room slowly rising and falling around the office.

The Getaway Gang. The only life which seemed true to these outcasts of society. It started with only 4 members. The Wildcards. They wore stainless white suits, with black gloves, shoes and ties. Each one had a mask with a card symbol on it. The icon for the team. From there, it seemed that new additions would show up almost everyone the island would be stitched with a new biome to explore.

Ace - The Disguise Expert, she's the only female of the team. She used this to her advantage however, for blending in to a scene. Hearts always said that they should recruit more woman to the team, he was always looking for someone to go out with though.

Inferno - The Enforcer, he was very fond of his favourite weapon, the dragon's breath, the rest of the team hated it but he didn't care, it was as close as he could get to a flamethrower. He could control fire as well.

Heist - The Comic Relief, he never really helped with missions but he did make for a great distraction. Turns out, he was a pacifist, no-one on the team really questioned it but they reappointed him as the hacker on the team, he was much more fun this way.

And there was a few more in the team too.

Spades let out a long sigh and leaned back in his chair, it let out a creek as he relaxed his back against it. Himself, Clubs and Ace were sitting around the office waiting for Diamonds and Dark to get back from they're stakeout on the target. Hearts and Heist were out shopping for food and... "non-incriminating equipment for... a show" at least that's what Heist called it. Inferno didn't stay around the office that long, it was on the colder part of the island and he only came in when necessary. They're newer member, Frost Broker, was getting his suit made up to be part of the team. January was a bad time for Frost. Not for the cold, he loved that part of it. He would just grow extra ice on his head and needed... "Haircuts" a lot.

Spades took a sip from his cup, the taste was bland, flat. He wanted to get a drink but he knew that hearts would have his head if he didn't finish his coffee first. Even though he was wearing his mask, you could tell he was bored out of his mind. And it wasn't just him. The room was filled with a sense of dull tension. Ace had been standing against the wall, trying to fix her jammed gun by literally poking the inside with a stick. Clubs had been sitting on top of the filing cabinet, with no files in it but a lot of ammunition. He was messing about with his Nintendo Switch, he was a big fan of fighting games. He actually based most of his fighting style off of the games he played. Every so often, they would see him trying to do a Hadouken.

"Ugh, how long are Diamonds and Dark gonna be? I've been looking to take another of Dark's Guns.""Take another of his guns? You've just broken another one of his and you're trying to fix it by hitting it with a branch. Besides, that's not the only thing you've been trying to get off him eh?, heh heh."

Clubs held his hand up for a high five, and Spades responded with a first bump leading to an awkward silence for a second, before Ace burst into a small rage.

"Oh shut up, Spades, go get a life and stop bothering people with theirs."The office light flickeredfora bit before the bulb popped. Clubs paused his game of smash and opened the drawer underneath him with his leg, reached in and pulled out a 60w bulb. Spades looked back over to Ace, who was scowling in his direction.

"Oh come on, Acey," He said with a huge smirk under his mask. "Everyone on the team knows you're been trying to get with Dark for a while now.""No, I'm not!" I'd rather jump off the reservoir then go out with that edgy freak." She turned toward the door and started to leave before she then remembered that she, along with her associates, were wanted criminals.

"Then, let's do pop quiz then, if you had to choose someone on the team, who'd you go for?""Wh-What kinda question is that?""A 'What If?' one."She was wearing her mask but Spades knew if he kept pressing for info here, maybe her mask would start turning red as well as her face.

"How about big Clubs over here?"Clubs glanced up from his switch when he heard this. He wasn't interested in the question, but he didn't liked being called big. He knew he was a big fella, not in stomach width of course. He was pretty tall and yes, he did lift, that wasn't an excuse to call him big. He stopped day-dreaming of going up to Spades and punching him in the mask and turned his attention to Ace while trying to look not interested at the same.

"Well, I think I'd look elsewhere than him."

Clubs lowered his head and resumed playing smash mashing the buttons harder in frustration. Ace noticed his gloominess in the corner and felt very bad afterwards, Clubs was a friend of few words but he wasn't all strong-silent type.

"Uhh..., no offense Clubs"

There was an awkward moment of silence again, until Spades piped up again with another suggestion.

"Well, how about Heist? Huh? The Crazy One?""Heist isn't crazy, he's just a' non violent nice guy. And no actually, I feel like he would be very annoying to be with constantly."Spades knew he had to keep going, she wasn't saying it with the same spunk as she did before. He was going to figure it out and antagonize her as much as possible cause of it.

"Inferno?""Uhh, he's a bit too violent...""The new guy, Frosty?""I never even met him before!""Me?""You're not that bad""Hearts?""He's too much of a suck-up.""Diamo... Wait... what did you say?""He's too much of a suck-up?""No, before that...""You're not... that... bad."Spades stopped and stared at her, he wasn't expecting himself to get flustered out of this.

Ace was silent, and covered her face with her hands, in a fit of embarrassment. She started walking to the door when Spades grabbed her hand and stopped her.

"Uhh sorry, but did you actually mean that?""I..I... I need to go out."

Ace made for the door but just as she opened the door, the distinct sound of a proximity mine in the hall, rang through the room

"Oh shi.." A large explosion rocked the building, and threw Ace and Clubs straight toward Spades in his office chair. Flames filled the corridor outside the office.

"Hey.. HEY! Ace! Clubs! You alright?"Yeah, i'm good."

Clubs let out a small grunt of confirmation.

"The entire place is on fire, how are we getting outta here???""The window, quick grab whatever you can and I'll set us up a zipline."Spades pulled out his grappler gun and shot a line down toward the lamppost on the ground. He jumped out the window and zipped down to the ground floor. Ace followed suit with a large duffel bag over her shoulder. Spades held his arms open to catch her on impact. She landed in his arms with a grunt and with a light blush in her face.

"I.. I didn't you to catch me, Shovel"." Eh, I felt like it".

They looked back up to the building waiting for Clubs to jump out as well, then they noticed. He was actually too big to get through the window. They could see in his eyes, he started panic in the office filled with fire.

"SMASH THE REST OF IT, CLUBS!"Clubs picked up his crowbar and started to hit the glass out on the rest of the window. He smashed open the sides until the frame fell out and then he put his leg on the ledge and hauled himself up onto the ledge. He put his arms on the zipline, picked up his bags and then-

The fire had reached the gas mains and the building exploded into a humongous explosion.

Spades shielded Ace from the explosion but were sent flying back into a wall. Other residents of the building were out on the street as the wailing of fire trucks were heard in the distance.

Ace and Spades collected themselves, still dazed from the explosion and turned to look at the building consumed by fire. She took off her mask and stared into the smouldering window where Clubs was looking back down at them. She stood there silently for a minute before Spades heard her start to sniffle.
