Prologue: New Beginnings

I sat at my desk, I know, this is how the last story started but trust me, school is boring, it gets hard to focus. It had been a few months since I've been here in Steelport, and let me tell you, this place fucking sucks. At least in Stilwater you could walk the streets without someone assuming you were a prostitute... Like what the fuck, I'm only sixteen I still have my whole life ahead of me. Anyway, I got a tap on my shoulder as the teacher droned on about our reading assignment, "Sara..." Stacy, my new best friend said to get my attention,

"What?" I whispered back,

"Wanna be my partner for this assignment?"

"Yeah, sure thing." I smiled at her. As I walked down the hallway to my next class I noticed someone duck behind a wall, I knew him from one of my classes, "Matt..." I rolled my eyes and approached where he was at. I peeked around the corner where he was, "Call it a hunch, but I'm pretty sure you're following me."

"No, I-I wasn't... I mean..." He was at a loss for words,

"Are you always this incoherent?"

"No..."

"So can I ask why you're following me?"

"I... I wasn't following you, I promise."

"Is that why you hid when I turned around."

"I was not hiding."

"It sure did look like it." I smirked. His face turned a bright shade of red, "You know, I'm not going to bite you if you talk to me... I'm not that scary." The bell rang, "We better go before we're late for class." I started off to go to class, "Maybe you can help me with something." I said,

"You need my help?" He asked,

"Yeah, I'm stuck on this programming issue on my computer that you probably know how to fix." We headed to class.

"I don't know Johnny, it's some kind of fancy police party that mom wants me to go to." I said to my brother over the phone as I was getting ready,

"So you have to dress up?" He asked,

"Duh, except I got rid of most of my dress clothes before the move. Shit, the last time I actually dressed nice was..." I didn't finish that thought, I didn't want to think about my past too much. I snapped back to reality, "... Anyway, I don't know what the fuck I'm going to wear."

"I don't know what to tell you Sara, I'm not an expert in that shit."

"Thanks Johnny..." I sighed, "How is everyone?"

He went silent for a second, "They're good. Shaundi's been asking about you, she really misses you."

"Yeah, I miss her too." I blinked back tears and looked at the clock, "I gotta go, talk to you later."

"Yeah."

"Love you Johnny."

"Love you too." I hung up the phone and left the bathroom to head to the closet.

Ever since I left Stilwater my wardrobe has become increasingly more black, I was becoming some kind of gothic weirdo... And it all started when my hair went from blonde to black. I flicked through the miscellaneous shirts and hoodies, "I've gotta have a dress in here somewhere." I finally got to the back of my wardrobe where there was my dress from last year's homecoming. It was just a long navy blue strapless dress with a black ribbon around the waist, "This'll have to do." I said, grabbing the dress.

I sat at the table, all by myself, watching my mom schmoozing with the mayor. He seemed to like her, my mom was pretty good at getting on people's good side. I looked around the room, there were hundreds of people there, not just policemen but big time business owners, a lot of the people looked like they were important. I sighed and rested my head on my hand, "This sucks." I muttered to myself as I closed my eyes and listened to the instrumental music provided by the band that was hired. The beat was slow and calming, I was almost asleep until I was brought out of my thoughts, "You look a little bored there..." The familiar British voice said. I looked up and saw it was Matt, he was actually wearing a tux and cleaned up nicely, I was impressed, "Matt... What the fuck are you doing here?" I asked,

"It's a long story... Would you like to dance with me?" He held out his hand. I looked at it for a minute, I couldn't remember the last time I really slow danced with anyone, especially a guy who would follow me around school. This was my moment, my moment to break out of my shell and move on from this awkward funk that I've been in, I took his hand. We made our way to the floor, "I gotta be honest, I'm not that good at dancing..."

He said, "It's okay, just follow my lead." We started to slow dance, "So, since we have some time, mind telling me why you're here?" I raised an eyebrow.

He had a nervous look on his face, "It's just... A long story."

"Matt, we have time."

"Well, why are you here?"

"My mom is a police officer, she dragged me out here so I could get out of the house... Though I'd much rather be home."

"Trust me, I don't want to be here either... My boss made me come."

"You have a boss? Like a gang?"

"I mean... Kind of. It's hard to explain."

"So your boss is here then?"

"Yeah."

I noticed he was looking past me instead of at me, "He's behind me isn't he?" I smirked,

"Not directly behind you."

"I wanna see." I started to turn us so that I was standing where he was. I scanned the room, "Where is he?"

"He's sitting at a table, with two girls and a bigger guy."

"Okay, let me see..." I scanned the room. I did notice in the back at one of the tables were the people Matt described. There were two girls, twins sitting next to an older guy and a guy wearing a wrestling mask, definitely a weird bunch to be at a place like this, they seemed to be talking amongst themselves, "Who are the other people he's with?" I asked,

"Well they're like..." He paused for a second, "Actually they wanted to... Meet you."

"Me? Matt have you been talking about me? You barely know me."

"I swear, I didn't tell them anything. I just, you know, saw you were sitting there and they wanted to meet you."

"That's it?" I raised an eyebrow,

"... Yes?"

"You're a fucking liar."

"Okay, I might have brought you up in conversation before..."

"Why, do you like me?" I teased with a smirk,

"C'mon, you gotta meet them." He took my hand and led me off the dance floor,

"Matt, wait." He stopped and looked at me, "I don't know about this..."

"Sara it's fine it'll be a short little conversation."

"I... Okay." I sighed. I didn't like talking to people I didn't know, it made me uncomfortable.

Matt practically dragged me up to the table, "You must be Ms. Ashmond. Please take a seat." The older man said to me. I didn't know what it was but there was something in his voice that had an authoritative tone to it, maybe it was his accent, either way I took a seat. Matt sat next to me, "Mr. Miller have told me a lot about you." The man said, I gave Matt an annoyed sideways glance, "Trust me, it was nothing bad I assure you. Allow me to introduce myself, I am Phillipe Loren, I believe you and I can do some business together."
