A Dance for Two

A Coll-Sam collab

Stuffy collars and lengthy periods of little movement. That was what a dance was, really.

But tonight, Agnarr knew, it would be so much more.

Sure, all the Arendellian nobles would be there. Representatives from Dewood were joining them. The ice harvesters were coming down to display their beautifully-crafted sculptures of crystal water. But none of that was important. Because tonight, for the first time, Iduna was joining him in the ballroom. Would be with him on the dance floor.

Iduna. His friend. His love. His life.

"Your Majesty, they're ready." A voice from his left broke him out of his daze.

"Oh! Yes, I'm coming," he replied, squaring his shoulders and smoothing out his dark forest-green uniform. Alright. Time to face the crowd. With a determined breath, he mentally prepared himself for the night to come.

His facade promptly fell apart when he saw her.

"Well, what do you think?" Iduna twirled slowly in the hallway, letting each individual ripple and sash of her dress shine in the corridor's candlelight. Pearls of blue glimmered where they draped across the floor.

She observed his gawking expression. "Should I take that as disgust? Or what?" she asked teasingly, raising an eyebrow.

He blinked. "You look… dazzling."

She smiled, reaching out and adjusting his collar. "Hmm, add that to the dictionary of ways-to-describe-Iduna." Another giggle escaped her mouth. "Really, Agnarr, the ice harvesters will be offended if you can't pay attention."

He laughed. "I'm ready now. That is, if you are."

"Let's get this over with." And with that the doors opened.

One, two, three, one, two, three… Iduna murmured to herself. They turned and walked, waltzing to the band's slow orchestral tune. It was a soft, gentle melody, long and flowing. Agnarr lifted her hand in his, then back down, swaying to the rhythm.

Sweat began to form on the back of her neck. She knew she was being watched. Judged. Scrutinized by everyone. A friend of the King, a newcomer! She just had to hang in there.

At least the dancing was working out for her. It seemed that the two lessons she'd taken with Gerda the other day had paid off. So far she'd been able to maintain some level of poise, a stranger among the sea of professionals.

She looked around. Men and women, all dressed in fine, ornate clothing, danced past her. Exquisite banners of green and purple silk decorated the walls. Trays of food and jugs of hot chocolate lined the tables, their brass knobs sparkling. The chandelier reflected dots of yellow and white down on them from its throne on the ceiling.

It was definitely a very cordial event. Everything in grace, in step, in one, two, threes…

Suddenly, Agnarr stepped on her foot. "Ow!" she yelped, tightening her grip on him.

"Oh, sorry." He cringed next to her. "Sorry." They both giggled uncontrollably.

Then the pair registered the silence around them. Iduna's eyes darted 'round and met the gazes of the guests. The musicians teetered off in the mutual confusion. Lord Peterssen shot Agnarr a steely, knowing look from across the hall.

Thankfully the moment did not linger. The lull filled. The dance continued.

But Iduna wasn't through. In Agnarr's next spin, she lifted her foot and lightly tapped his toes with her own, taking care to stay quiet. Not a stomp. But a peck, a brush against the leather of his sole.

He suppressed a laugh, then eyed her playfully. "Payback, huh?"

"Call it even," she whispered back, winking at him.

He just shrugged, then twirled her around and sent her heart racing. Their bodies pressed together, mouths near each others' ears, breaths hot and heavy in the ballroom's chilly setting. Iduna shivered in her excitement, their close proximity making the blood rush to her head.

A touch grazed her foot, and she knew where it'd come from without even looking down. She smirked. "Are you sure you wanna do this? They do call me the Master-of-spinning-toe-taps for a reason."

Agnarr's eyes danced with delight. "Oh, really? I don't know, 'cause… well, I think that's actually my title."

She laughed into his shoulder, leaning her head against his chest. "No, I'm pretty sure it's mine. I was dubbed it a few minutes ago." With that, she jumped up off her toes and tapped him. Twice. "I'd step down if I were you, before you get in over your head."

"Then it's a good thing you're not me." He quickly returned the favor. "Is that title… perchance, up to challenge?"

Her smirk widened. "So you agree it's mine."

"For the moment, Iduna, if it pleases you."

She smiled. "You'd like that, wouldn't you?" Raising her foot, she brought it down on Agnarr's left foot with perhaps a bit more force then she'd intended to. Oops.

Still in her embrace, he stifled a strangled cry through gritted teeth. "Ow," he said, leaning into her ear. "Remind me later to make a decree to round out shoes and make them less, ah, pointy." His grimace of pretend pain made her giggle.

Uh oh. They were being watched again. It seemed Agnarr hadn't stifled his gasp quite enough. Coming to the same realization, he blushed furiously and offered an awkward smile. Lord Peterssen sighed and chuckled in adoring disbelief from across the chamber.

The hallway's soft candlelight was easier on the eyes than the glaring brightness of the chandelier. Hand in hand, he and Iduna strolled back to their room.

"So, what'd you think?" he asked.

She smiled shyly, glancing down at her feet. "I… I liked it. But I don't know if that kind of… uh, silent competition happens every time."

Agnarr stopped her, pulling her close and tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "It can if you want."

It looked like she was about to say something in return, but then he tapped her once more. She gasped in mock betrayal, tilting her face up to look at him. "Did I just fall for that?"

"I don't know. Did you?" His grin broke, sending both of them into hysterical laughter. In retaliation, she promptly chased him down the hallway, hands raised. Caught off guard, he yelled in happy surprise and tried to evade his lover's attacks.

For someone watching the pair, it might have looked like they were mad. Tagging each other with wild abandon, falling over, and collapsing in one big, giggling mess on the carpet.

But it wasn't madness. It was love.

Agnarr knew boring dances were a thing of the past.

A/N: They're just adorable, aren't they? This night is definitely one to remember. Did you like how in the end Iduna is chasing Agnarr, a parallel to how Agnarr chased Iduna offscreen in the Gale Test scene? Thanks for reading and leave a review!

Samantha: I dedicate this art to symbolize my inner strength moving forward in life and proving that I can overcome any fear and do the next right thing.
