Saruhiko hated both, her gender and her secondary gender.

Growing as an omega girl under Fushimi Niki's care hadn't been easy; the first taste of how the world would look down on her, her abilities, her body, had all been provided by that man.

In a convoluted way, she owed him thanks, for breaking up any hopes she could have developed through the years, for showing her the true and cruel reality that would be hers for the rest of her life.

If she hacked her papers to change her gender in order to pretend she was a male beta, if she bought experimental drugs to mask her secondary gender, well, it was all in the name of self-protection. It wasn't like she wanted to have any children – who with any rational thinking would want to bring any child at all to this shitty world?

So Saruhiko pretended to be what she wasn't born as, and made fun of Misaki for his femenin name and his fear of girls, amused at that boy that would not be able to talk to her if only he knew the truth.

The competition for "Misaki's love", as Aya called it, was even fiercer from her side, as her cousin knew perfectly well that Saruhiko wasn't a guy.

"We betas should be together, don't you think so, cousin?" would ask Aya. "It's not like beta and omega can ever procreate" she'd add with a teasing, knowing smirk as Misaki got redder and redder, flapping his arms and unable to speak correctly.

Misaki was a really good boy, the likes of which Saruhiko hadn't believed that existed. His family was oh-so-different from hers, caring and warm even if Misaki felt like he didn't belong with them. Minoru and Megumi liked her especially, cuddling up to her whenever they saw her.

Saruhiko didn't know what to do with that, not rationally, but her instincts would nudge her to show them the little care she had known thanks to Misaki. Her instincts would make her feel a little protective towards them just like she felt towards Misaki, and when they went on to live on their own, Saruhiko left a little app on the siblings' phones so they would know to contact her if needed.

She still pretended to be a boy and a beta, the habit so ingrained that Misaki, unattentive guy that he was, didn't realize anything amiss in the time they shared together. It was partly due to Saruhiko's well-settled head, always mindful of her drugs and changing clothes on the bathroom.

Misaki was the one to cook and clean most of the times, and though Saruhiko looked and comitted the acts to memory, she didn't care enough to actually do it herself.

ooo

Meeting HOMRA, actually being accepted as part of the Clan, wasn't in her plans. It actually spooked her.

That man hadn't been an alpha -Niki was an omega just like her- but the Red King still reminded her of her parents: powerful and uncaring of those beneath him.

Saruhiko couldn't help but fear for the moment he would turn his eyes to her, realizing what kind of weakling he had accepted into his territory. Surely that day Saruhiko would be put at the end of the command chain just like she already was as a male beta – her ideas, her contributions discarded in favour of plain brutal force, as if to remark how unneeded her presence there was.

Girls already faced discrimination, even those who were alphas like that woman, but she who had the added weight of being an unmated omega, faced the risk of being raped each day, especially while being around HOMRA: headstrong alphas, violent betas, zero omegas besides herself and zero girls to boot. Saruhiko seriously feared for herself every day she was part of the Red Clan, despite how strongly she tried to ignore it.

After that man's death, her fears of one day being looked at in hatred and disgust by Misaki for her deception -already up in years-, panicked about the Red King ever discovering her status as an omega girl and the visit to the Blue Clan, where Liutenant Awashima was present and respected, things came to a head for Saruhiko.

She did not hesitate to take Munakata's hand after JUNGLE's attack on the apartment she shared with Misaki, Mikoto didn't even have to make his presence known for her to realize that she didn't want to be at HOMRA.

He found Yata instead, explaining to him that Fushimi was to be a Blue from then on.

Despite being told by his adored King, Yata felt betrayed. What kind of right did Saruhiko think he had to simply walk out without a proper goodbye?

The next time they saw each other face to face Yata snarled, full of venom and despair, while Saruhiko convinced herself that it was better that he hated her for betraying him than for lying to him through all the years they had shared.

And if she burnt her HOMRA mark to destroy any possible doubt, well, that was her prerrogative.

ooo

Scepter 4 was superior to HOMRA in many aspects, in Saruhiko's eyes.

Women had the same rights and respect that men. Omegas weren't others' scapegoats, actually gaining respect fairly. Kamo and Enomoto, for example, Domyouji too and that Kusuhara boy Hidaka told her about. There were also betas, Akiyama and Benzai, and the very Captain too, just like there were alphas like the Liutenant, Fuse and Hidaka.

Saruhiko felt safer with them than she ever did in HOMRA.

Minoru and Megumi congratulated her sincerely when she told them, insisting on visiting her whenever she had a free day, and though she missed Misaki terribly, it was better this way.

She kept their visits to a minimum, and tried to corral her instinctss into not caring about the Blue Clan, to no avail. The younger teens and her coworkers still sneaked their way into her heart, giving her reasons to appreciate her life -her deceptive, shrouded in lies, life- even after she had to renounce to her attachments to Misaki.

When Totsuka was murdered, not many things differed from what would occur, but for the fact that it is Misaki who does not want to have anything at all with his old friend, not even cordial talks.

As part of his final message, Mikoto ask for Anna to tell Yata that he didn't fault Saruhiko, that the Vanguard should try and reforge that friendship before it is too late.

Yata Misaki is too pigheaded by far, but he would still try for his King – one could argue that it was his final wish.

He finds Saruhiko on a day he's meeting with his siblings, and hidden from them he's witness to the clear love both Minoru and Megumi greet Saruhiko with, the little smile he turns to them, the curiosities they ask about his work and personal life.

How they ask about their insensitive arse of an older brother to be answered something along the lines of "I imagine that he's feeling down lately, as his King passed away recently".

Yata turns around, unable to face his old best friend and his siblings.

ooo

Nobody would have ever know about Fushimi's gender and her secondary one if not for her infiltration mission into JUNGLE. Not because they air off her business but because her drugs can't be delivered on time while she's underground.

All these years she had been careful not to step inside Hospitals, not to take physical examinations.

All of her efforts get thoroughly trashed as Sukuna pierces her thight with one of her knives and later Douhan takes her to a Hospital, even if it's one under Scepter 4's direction.

There's no one from the three allied Clans that do not know of her burdens by the time she has recovered, Minoru and Megumi sat on each of her sides as Misaki enters her Hospital room. They are the ones she put as the contacts to inform in case she's in danger, behind Munakata himself. He's the one who called them; they were already anxious after more than a month with no answers from Saruhiko.

A part of Misaki cowers from Saruhiko and the fact that he was a girl all along. Another scoffs, because girl or no girl, Saruhiko is Saruhiko. He has never feared the damned monkey, he's not going to start now. Even if he's actually a woman, she's completely different from the rest.

Even so, is still difficult for him to start the conversation.

"So. You're a girl". He has no problem about the omega part, even if he doesn't really see it; Saruhiko has not been caring in a lot of time, and he-she's not what he'd call an innocent, innofensive omega like most of them are. Saruhiko's prickliness had always stroke him as an alpha's characteristic more than her real secondary.

"Quite" she admitted curtly.

"All this time?" the question had to be asked, had to be. And he needed answers, damnit.

"My father", there's a slight hesitation that the three siblings still catch, "was the first to illustrate just what kind of shit life I would have for being born as what I am", she shrugged her shoulders. "Pretending to be a guy was easy, as was altering my records, and working sideways to pay for our first flat was no more complicated than doing it to acquire the secondary's suppresors.

"By the time we met the farce was well-put in place, and once we got to live together I was already scared of the day you'd found me out and despised me, just like that man said the world would. So I kept on pretending, and when I had the chance to get out with no one being the wiser about the truth, I took ot".

"You're super courageus" said then Minoru.

"Just like a spy" added Megumi, her eyes twinkling as she looked at Saruhiko. As another omega girl, it was really important for Megumi the way the older omega had protected her from alpha classmates and older students in the past.

Yata remembers the creepy man his friend had for a father, and though he would have liked for Saruhiko to tell him herself, well, all's well that end's well.

ooo

Saruhiko won't be able to have children, ever, due to all the years her body has been under the suppresor drugs, a fact she doesn't care about, but it doesn't change the fact that she's unmated and therefore still at risk.

She doesn't want to trouble Misaki with things like that, and the man still has difficulties seeing her as more than Saruhiko, best friend. Things like being a girl or having heats don't really register in his brain, not at least until her heat is all over them one day on the flat they started to share after all that mess with the Dresden Slate and the Green Clan.

Misaki is not really affected by her hormones, and he could mark and bond with her despite the fact that he would never form a knot for her, but he's still the only one she would have as her partner.

She doesn't force herself on him, beyond admitting that he's the only one she could trust, and while Misaki helps her during that heat, and several following ones, he will not mark her as his until a couple years pass.

Yes, Saruhiko is very, very dear to him, but this time he wants to form a long-lasting attachment that has nothing to do with heats or that is based in a lie.

And when he finally marks her as his it is real, undeniable, and forever.
