Chapter 31 Another Try

Zuko was awoken by his phone going off. It was Toph's ringtone. He opened his eyes, trying to think what she was doing up so early and then remembered everything that had happened the day before. He grabbed his phone and rushed to the family room, finding Tenzin sitting up on the couch, already opening his lap top. Tenzin met his eyes and nodded. Zuko took a deep breath to calm himself and handed the agent the phone.

"Hello?" Tenzin answered

"My patience is wearing thin," Azula stated and it sounded hushed. Zuko heard more emotion in her tone than she usually let in. "Do we have a deal or not?"

"Yes, we do," Tenzin replied, still keeping his eyes on Zuko. "We'll meet at…

"No," Azula interrupted. "I'll text directions 20 minutes before the meet. It'll be tomorrow. Make sure my brother comes alone. No 'help' this time."

"You know I'll…" click. Tenzin sighed as the line went dead and Zuko let out the breath he hadn't known he was holding.

Azula had learned well, almost too well from their father, but something was different.

"Can Toph and Jun listen to that?" Zuko asked.

He was still rubbing the sleep from his eyes. It was only 4:30 in the morning and Tenzin was in sweats, having slept on the couch in case another call came in. And it had. Azula must have woken early so Ozai couldn't listen in. Or, it was a trap. Zuko was pretty sure that either way he looked at it, it was a trap for him. Tenzin nodded while stifling a yawn.

"Better get some coffee going," Tenzin stated as he got up slowly and made his way to the kitchen. Zuko nodded and made his way back to his room to get ready for his run.

Since his reunion with Toph the day before after the botched trade, he hadn't seen her. She had gone to the hospital to be reunited with her parents and treated for her injuries. He wanted to give her time with her family as he had time with his. He wasn't sure if Lao would ever let him get close to Toph again and he was giving them space.

As he changed into his running gear, he smiled slightly. He remembered how she had used Jun's phone to call him the night before, most likely with her cousin's blessing. Toph had still been shaken about her kidnapping, but seemed to have gotten better once she had gotten back to her parents.

Zuko headed back out to the family room as he smelled coffee brewing and found Tenzin and Bato talking quietly. They stopped when they saw Zuko. Tenzin looked serious. "Zuko, you know you don't have to go through with the trade."

Zuko met the man's eyes, knowing he was giving the teen another chance to back out. But that would be running...again. He was tired of it. Tired of the fear, the pain, the worry.

"No," Zuko stated firmly. "I'm not running from him anymore. It's time to fight back."

Tenzin glanced at Bato and sighed. "You were right," the negotiator told the blue eyed agent. "I owe you." he then turned back to Zuko. "I'll be heading over to the Bei Fongs and Jun once I get word that at least Jun is awake. I'll review the audio while you are out on your run.

Bato turned to smirk at Zuko. "We had a small bet. I'll split the winnings with you. Let's get Danny and Roland and head out. Sue's outside, ready for us."

"So what did we win?" Zuko asked Bato quietly once the agent had called Danny and Roland to have them meet outside Zuko's house.

"Steak for lunch," Bato replied, grinning.

Zuko let a small smile out. "Sounds good."

"What do you say we go a little longer today," Bato asked the scarred teen.

"Think Roland and Danny can keep up?"

Bato chuckled as they met up with Sue. "They'll have to or they'll fail their annual exam. Sue, you up for 6 miles today?"

Sue just laughed. "Doing the physical today without their knowledge? Yes, and it'll help them get over yesterday."

Once Danny and Roland had joined them, they both groaned at finding out the length of their run and that this run would count as their annual physical exam.

Toph sighed. She was practically bed ridden. She hated being stuck, and after being strapped to a chair for a couple days she was now stuck in a bed. But, her feet needed to heal. After she had been reunited with her parents, to many hugs and even some kisses from both parents, she had been treated. Her father had been furious with Ozai for her injuries and treatment, but he was strangely not angry with Zuko. Or least it seemed that way whenever her father spoke of her boyfriend, which wasn't often. She had her feet bandaged again after the doctors had taken another look at them and applied some medicine to her feet. She had braced herself for pain, but strangely the medicine hadn't hurt. It had even numbed the area. The doctor had told her the medicine would help heal the burns faster and was mixed with a topical sedative so she wouldn't be in too much pain. She had been given orders to stay off her feet as much as possible.

She had been discharged along with her mother that night. Her dad had already had a special bed and a private nurse set up at their home for her mom. And Toph had a wheelchair available if needed. She was not looking forward to being wheeled around. She heard the front door open and heard the new guy, Tenzin, talking with her dad in a low tone before they started heading her way.

"Good morning Toph," Tenzin said in a friendly, calm voice from just outside her door and Toph found she liked his voice. "I have something for you and your cousin to listen to, once she is awake."

"You better have brought some of Iroh's brew." Toph heard her cousin say in a groggy tone from the hallway.

Toph almost chuckled as she heard Tenzin reach towards her cousin and a relieved sigh sounded from Jun. "And I have another thermos for the young lady. Go get refreshed, Jun, and then I have something for you both to listen to."

That piqued Toph's curiosity and Tenzin must have noticed her sitting up a little straighter because he chuckled softly. It sounded similar to Zuko's chuckle. Like he had been through a lot but still found reason to find some joy.

"Jun, please bring a couple of mugs back with you," Tenzin called back to the hallway which was answered by a grunt.

Toph heard him walk towards her and pause as he reached her bed. "May I sit?" he asked gently.

Toph just smiled and nodded. Her bed dipped as he sat at the foot of the bed, away from her bandaged feet.

"I know we spoke, or rather you spoke, of your experiences yesterday, but do you have any questions for me?" Tenzin asked her.

"How's Zuko doing with all this?" Toph asked.

"He's doing...all right, considering everything," Tenzin answered calmly, yet delicately, as if he was choosing his words with care.

Toph huffed. "That's not what I asked, and you know it," she told Tenzin with a smirk.

"Nothing gets past you, does it?" Teznin asked and it sounded as if he was appraising her awew.

"Not much," she replied. "Now, tell. How is Zuko really doing?"

"He's been worried sick about you," Jun stated as she came into Toph's room. "Here, pour," she said and Toph heard mugs clinking as Jun handed them to Tenzin.

"Yes," Tenzin replied as Toph smelled Iroh's morning brew being poured into mugs. She held her hand out for one and frowned as she held it palm up.

"Something wrong?" Tenzin asked as he placed the mug in her hand.

"Nothing," Toph muttered under her breath. She knew both adults had noticed her turning quiet, but she pressed forward after taking a sip. "Ok, continue. Is he ok?"

"He was pretty pissed when you were first taken," Jun continued and it sounded like she was sitting down into the wheelchair. "I'm glad I wasn't in the same room with him when that happened. Iroh said he almost sprained his wrist from what he did to the punching bag. But, he powered through."

Tenzin sighed. "He offered to trade himself for you immediately, He is tired of running. I noticed something shift in him from when I arrived. Zuko isn't afraid of his father anymore. He was more scared of losing you."

That made Toph blush slightly and she tried to hide it behind her mug. She heard a gurgle from her cousin drinking her tea and knew Jun had seen it.

"He doesn't want anyone hurt by Ozai anymore," Toph stated after she finished her sip of tea. She remembered his words to her the day before in the ambulance. How he had practically said he loved her without saying the words. And she had replied the same. They were young, could they really be in love? Did she love Zuko?

"If I could interrupt your musings," Tenzin stated after a minute or two of silence, "Are you both awake and alert enough to listen to a recording? Zuko asked if you could."

"Who is it?" Jun asked before Toph could.

"Azula. She called this morning, waking both Zuko and I up. Most likely to not alert Ozai to her new deal."

Toph just nodded, hearing Jun's hair as if she was doing the same. They listened to the recording 10 times before Jun called a break.

"Azula's desperate," Toph said while her cousin got up to stretch. "She's doubting her father more. She's starting to see the truth she blinded herself to."

"What truth would that be?" Tenzin asked. Toph gave him a wry grin. She was pretty sure he already knew the answer.

"That Ozai only wants revenge. He doesn't care about her. She's just a tool to get what he wants. He never intended to leave with her." She felt a pang of sadness well up within her at that. To be seen as nothing more than a tool...Toph shook her head. Her parents loved her, even if they were overprotective. Azula's father... he just wanted what he wanted. And he did whatever it took to get it. Toph shuddered as she thought about her own private session with Ozai. If she hadn't been tied to the chair, things would have been much different.

"It's ok," Jun said softly, laying a gentle hand on Toph's shoulder. "He won't hurt you again."

"No, but he plans to kill Zuko and Ursa," Toph said quietly. "Aunt Jun, you can't let that happen!"

"We don't plan on it," Tenzin stated firmly. "But you know Zuko probably better than any of us. Do you think he'll go quietly."

Toph laughed. It was more of a chuckle, or a laugh of desperation. "Hell, no." She paused for a moment. "But Ozai is just plain nuts. Zuko's good, but crazy throws a wrench into it. He'll need backup."

"He'll have it," Tenzin said in a firm tone. Toph let a smile come to her face as she heard a smile in Tenzin's voice.

"He better, or I'll be the one hunting you down, bad feet or not."

Jun laughed so hard she started snorting. "That's exactly what your mother said!" the agent said between laughs.

Zuko heard his phone ringing with the ringtone he had set for Jun after lunch. "Hello?" he answered.

"Hi Sunshine," Toph stated and he felt himself truly smile for the first time all day.

"Hi, how are you doing?' he asked, slipping away from Bato and his mother in the family room to his own room to speak more privately.

Toph sighed heavily. "Besides being stuck in bed? All right. Better than I was."

Zuko paused. "I'm…"

"Don't you dare!" Toph interrupted. "No apologizing! This wasn't your fault. It was that maniac who is too far gone to even see he won't get anything in return for the pain he's causing."

Zuko started smiling again as he sank onto his bed. "Everyone's been telling me it's not my fault. But how can I not feel guilty? Just by knowing me, your family has been hurt. You've been hurt."

"Still not your fault, so stop beating yourself up over it. Or I will."

Zuko sighed and the line went silent for a bit.

"Zuko, you know the truth. You stand up for the right thing. That's something he will never understand."

"Toph...thank you. Did you hear…?"

"The recording from your sister this morning? Yeah," Toph sighed. "I listened to it."

"And?" Zuko asked when Toph was silent for a minute.

"She's done with him."

Zuko ran a hand through his hair, feeling the brace on his wrist as it almost caught. Why had it taken so long for Azula to see sense?

"Sunshine, you there?"

Zuko chuckled. "Yeah, still here. Just trying to understand my sister."

"Don't. I tried and was able to help sow the seed of doubt. I don't think anyone can understand her. I don't think she understands herself...at least not right now."

"Probably not," Zuko sighed.

"You going to be ok tomorrow?"

"Yeah, Tenzin will be with me. And Jun and Bato will be backup. Too bad Nyla can't be there."

"Yeah, she's soaking up lots of attention and treats here now that she's been discharged too. It's a good thing the shot was through and through and nothing major was hit." Toph's tone turned serious and Zuko could almost hear what could be fear in it. "You know you'll have to face him."

Zuko sighed again. "I know."

"Zuko, be careful,"Toph said and Zuko paused as he heard a lot of emotion in her voice, just as he had heard the day before after they kissed.

He smiled softly. "I will." They talked a little more of other things, of her trip and their friends being so worried for her. Toph had stated she would call them later and was looking forward to getting her own phone again. They must have talked for another half hour before Toph had to go as her father was heading her way. Another reminder to stay safe or she would kick his butt was made before she hung up.

Zuko and Tenzin had been sitting in the agent's car for at least 3 hours near the mall where they had rescued Toph and still no text or call had come in. The teen was getting bored, and hungry. Tenzin offered him a protein bar again as the teen's stomach growled, again. Zuko grabbed it this time, his hunger finally pushing aside the worry he felt. Not eating for the past 5 hours was not helping. He was hungry and 's phone went off as he finished the protein bar, finally feeling a little better with the food in his stomach.

"Hi Jun," Tenzin answered. "No word yet. You know I'll call or text when we have something." Zuko saw Tenzin pinch the bridge of his nose out of the corner of his eye and turned away to hide a small smirk from the agent. "I know, but we're not the ones in charge at this time. It's a waiting game, as it always was….Yes….Yes, I know you hate waiting. Why don't you check on Nyla…."

Zuko sighed and just looked out the window as Tenzin tried to keep Jun calm. He understood how both of them felt. He was tired of waiting and he wanted to get this over with. But Azula was the one planning the next move. The day was deceptively calm. A clear blue sky, hardly any cars driving on the nearby street. Nothing to indicate that today Zuko would probably be facing his father and sister again. The last couple days before had been chaotic, but he knew the agents would do everything to protect him. And now, Toph was safe.

Zuko smiled a little as he thought of his girlfriend and then felt his phone vibrate. He pulled it out and felt his smile fall into a frown. He reached over to show the text to Tenzin.

"Jun, we have a development. Text arrived. We're heading to the Dell warehouse, where we had the alarm set off. See you there."

Tenzin hung up with a relieved sigh. He then turned to Zuko and looked thoughtful to the scarred teen. "Again, are you sure you want to…?"

"Yes, and we'd better hurry," Zuko interrupted. He knew Tenzin was trying to keep him safe, but Ozai wouldn't show if he wasn't there.

Tenizn merely sighed again and put the car into gear and drove to the warehouse. The parking lot of the warehouse was empty, even more cut off than the mall parking lot had been. Zuko couldn't see any streets with passing vehicles and he knew Jun and Bato would have to stay further back to avoid detection. They had made the drive in 15 minutes. Zuko looked at the text again. It had only given the address of the Dell warehouse and the time of 10am. They still had 5 minutes.

"Any idea where they could be?" Zuko asked Tenzin. They both had their vests on already, and Zuko had the keys to the 3 vehicles requested by Ozai in his pockets, but the meeting point was the unknown factor. He didn't see where Azula or Ozai could be. The warehouse appeared secure and there were no other cars in the parking lot and he hadn't seen any in the parking lots of the nearby warehouses. 10 am came and passed and still nothing. Tenzin was starting to text Jun and update at 10:05 when Zuko's phone vibrated again.

He looked at the text and groaned. Showing it to Tenzin, the agent sighed heavily. "Very well. I'll drive, you call Jun."

Tenzin drove quickly out of the parking lot, heading towards the freeway. Zuko quickly called Jun's phone with his own. He was surprised the tires hadn't squealed when Tezin started driving again.

"Change of plans," he told her when she answered. "I got a new text. The address is across town."

"So, where is it?" Jun asked and Zuko heard the frustration in her tone.

"Gaoling Community College. The theatre there."

Jun sighed. "Of course. Ozai was into theatre when he was young, supposedly."

Zuko frowned. "He prefers the tragedies. Where the hero dies or fails miserably."

He saw Tenzin frowning out of the corner of his eye. "Makes sense now," Jun replied. "We're about 5 minutes behind you, to not make anyone suspect anything. But the college will still be on break so the parking lots will be empty. I'll call the security before Piandao and have them back away from that area and try to look normal."

"Ok, see you there. Hopefully this is the last text."

"Me too," was all Jun replied before she hung up.

Twenty minutes later, Tenzin pulled into the empty parking lot of the community college. He easily found the theatre and parked. A minute after they stopped, another text came in.

"Enter the theatre. Main door is open," the text stated.

Zuko met Tenzin's eyes and the agent nodded. Tenzin easily sent a text to Jun as they exited the car.

"How many weapons are on you?" Tenzin asked quietly as they walked towards the main door.

"Three knives, including the belt buckle."

"Ok, make sure he doesn't get those if you get into a fight," Tenzin replied. As they approached the door, his right hand lingered on the gun at his hip. Tenzin tested the door before opening it carefully. The inside was dark and they let their eyes adjust before they entered slowly. Tenzin started out in front as they made their way slowly through the entry and towards the main theatre. Once they opened the door, Zuko saw a singular light shining on the stage and Ozai waiting in the center of the stage, under the light. A stool stood behind him. He had a gun in his left hand.

Zuko saw that his father's entire right hand and forearm were bandaged and a good part of the bandage around the hand was dark as if a lot of blood had dried.

Zuko frowned and stepped towards his father, still following Tenzin. He glanced around and didn't see Azula. Where was she and what was going on?

"Ah, the prodigal son returns," Ozai started with a smirk, causing Zuko to frown more. "And he brought a friend." Zuko heard a thump behind him and turned as Tenizn did before Azula crashed onto Tenzin from the balcony above. He moved to help the agent and was stopped as Ozai pointed his gun towards Zuko.

"No, my boy. Not yet," Ozai stated and Zuko could only watch as Azula had already knocked Tenzin out. The weight of her body and a well positioned jab had knocked the agent unconscious in a single move. Now, Zuko was alone with his family. He met Azula's eyes and saw her try to smirk at him as she usually did. However, her face was different this time. She looked apprehensive, almost nervous.

"Where are the keys," she asked.

"In my pocket," Zuko replied. He just kept his eyes on her. He made no effort to indicate which pocket, which she obviously noted with a roll of her eyes.

"Come on," she replied, having taken Tenzin's gun from his holster. She motioned her brother to walk in front of her with the gun and towards the stage where Ozai still had his gun pointed at Zuko.

"So what now?" Zuko asked his sister quietly as he passed her.

"He wants you."

"Azula, you don't have to…"

"Speak up, boy! No need to whisper. We're all family here," Ozai stated, frowning.

Zuko turned to glare at his father. "I was asking what now? You have me. What else is there?"

Ozai sneered at his son. "You will learn respect and then I will kill you. Your mother and uncle are fools, but they're too heavily guarded at this time. Killing you will destroy them. Then, I will be free of you weaklings."

Zuko stopped at the bottom of the stage. He looked up at his father. Ozai's long black hair was greasy and frayed. He wore rags and looked like he hadn't showered in a couple days. He also looked thin and was holding the gun awkwardly in his left hand. "I?" Zuko asked. "Not we? What about Azula?"

He saw Ozai's eyes dart towards his sister who was still behind him. Something flickered in his gold eyes, perhaps doubt. "Of course I meant we," he snarled back. "You will fight me to see what you've learned. This time, no one will interfere. No weather or obstacles. Only a way to make it more even. Then, you will die after you have lost."

Zuko frowned and heard Azula approach behind him. He almost elbowed her when she reached for his right hand, still in it's brace, but held still as Ozai continued to point his gun at Zuko. Azula bound some rope around Zuko's right arm and wrist, binding it to his side at his waist.

He felt her searching his pockets briefly as she did so and felt her slip out 2 of the keys from his back pocket. Zuko knew she must have felt one of the knives on him as she tied the rope, but she made no move to take it or point it out to their father. She merely stepped away after making sure the knot was secure. Once Azula stepped away, Ozai smirked at Zuko and then backed up to place his gun on a stool in the middle of the stage. He then sank into a fighting stance.

"Ready when you are, boy. I'm sorry it has to end this way."

Zuko merely took a deep breath before sinking into his own stance. "No you're not," he replied calmly. He watched and waited. Ozai's stance was loose, he was compensating for his mangled hand, and twitched every couple of seconds. Zuko had learned from his spars with Toph, the training his uncle had given him, and the tournament. He would wait out Ozai.

Ozai's smirk quickly fell to a frown when he realized Zuko wasn't going to make the first move. He jumped towards his son with a kick aimed at Zuko's head. Zuko merely sidestepped out of the way. He quickly brought up his left hand to block a roundhouse kick as Ozai spun and kicked out again. More jabs and kicks followed and Zuko blocked or stepped out of the way. He could see Ozai becoming more frustrated as he didn't fight back. They circled around the stage.

"Fight me, boy!" Ozai gritted in frustration after failing to land a kick on Zuko for the fifth time.

"Why?" Zuko asked as he blocked another jab. "You never liked it when I fought back before. You never let Mom fight back. Or Toph. Do you think you could have touched her if you hadn't had her tied to a chair? You only want to hurt those who can't fight back!"

Ozai snarled again and jabbed in towards Zuko's face. Zuko caught the incoming fist with his left hand and fell backwards, kicking his father in the stomach and over his shoulder. He couldn't roll to be above Ozai as Toph had done with him due to his bound arm, so he let Ozai go and quickly jumped back to his feet.

He turned and waited as Ozai got to his feet more slowly than Zuko had. Ozai's face was set in a feral snarl. Zuko almost didn't recognize his father the way Ozai was looking at him. Ozai's eyes darted towards Zuko's right. The scarred teen didn't want to follow the line of sight, but saw the snarl start to turn into a smirk. He glanced to his right quickly and saw the gun set on the stool about ten yards from where he was. He glanced back just in time to see Ozai coming forward to jab at his left side. Zuko caught the wrist as Ozai tried to feint and head towards the gun. The teen then turned and kneed his father in the side before sweeping out and knocking his feet from under him. Ozai managed to get his wrist loose and rammed his bandaged wrist into the side of Zuko's head.

Zuko felt and heard his ears ring, wondering what Ozai had under the bandages and tried to keep the man from getting to the gun. They wrestled on the floor, Zuko starting to strike his father more, but more concerned on just keeping him from the gun. They slowly made their way, inching along towards the stool. Ozai managed to land a kick in Zuko's stomach and reached one of the legs of the stool, toppling it over and sending the gun to the floor. Zuko tried to jump for it, to get it away from Ozai, but Ozai was closer and scooped it up, turning and pointing it at his son.

"Well, this is where we part,"Ozai panted, a smile starting to appear again.

Zuko rose from the ground to his knees and noticed movement behind Ozai. He let a small smile come to his lips. "Perhaps, but not for long."

"Drop the gun!" Jun shouted as she stepped out from the shadows behind Ozai.

Ozai's eyes dated around as other agents and police showed themselves or entered the theatre, pointing their guns at Ozai. Ozai's small smile fell again.

"No!" he yelled and pulled the trigger.

Zuko instinctively closed his eyes and braced himself, being only 5 feet from the gun, but only an empty click sounded.

"Drop it or you will be shot!" Jun yelled again, getting closer to Ozai.

"No! No ! No!" Ozai yelled, trying to pull the trigger again, but it had jammed. Zuko backed up as Jun and Bato and another police officer rushed Ozai, disarming him and wrestling him to the ground on his stomach.

"You'll pay for this!" Ozai yelled as they placed cuffs on his wrists and more officers came forward to carry him away. "I'll be free soon and you'll all die!"

Zuko just sat back once his father was handcuffed and watched as the police carried him out. He saw Tenzin approach him and hold out a hand, but he merely shook his head. He needed to be sitting for a while. Tenzin merely shrugged and sat down next to the teen.

"Need help with that?" Tenzin asked, gesturing to the rope that still bound Zuko's right arm. Zuko merely shook his head and pulled a knife out of a pocket with his left hand and easily cut the rope.

They sat in silence for a minute, Zuko stretching his right arm and wrist to get feeling back into them. He finally glanced over at Tenzin and saw the agent placing an ice pack to his neck.

"You ok?"

"Yes," Tenzin replied, frowning. "Your sister sure knows how to punch. But I'll be fine. I came to just as the fight started. I know you didn't have a choice, but you did well."

Zuko merely shrugged. He had been just trying to buy time, to wait out his father so he could get caught.

"Do you think he'll escape?" Tenzin asked. "Will Azula set him free?"

Zuko sighed and felt into his pockets. He pulled out one car key and the other knife and showed them to Tenzin.

"I don't think Jun will let him get close to a door for a while. And I think, and actually hope, Azula's gone. Did you tell everyone to come?"

Tenzin let a sigh come out and nodded. They just sat in silence for a while until Jun came back with some paramedics and Captain Piandoa in tow.

"Still here?" she asked with her usual smirk.

"I'm tired,"Tenzin replied. "It's been a while since I've had any physical harm done to me."

"I'm just glad it's over," Zuko sighed.

Jun smiled and the paramedics came to examine both Tenzin and Zuko. A few cuts and bruises were found on Zuko, many of which he was not even aware of, but they were inconsequential compared to what he had received during the Homecoming dance or the other scars he had received from his father.

He answered the Captain and Jun's questions regarding the fight easily and told them about Azula taking 2 of the keys. Once they were done asking questions, both Jun and Piandao started calling the agents or police watching the vehicles. Apparently one of the vehicles had been taken and the police were tracking it through a gps installed in it.

Zuko was just tired and ready to head home. Bato held a hand out to him and he used the agent to help pull himself to a standing position. Once he was upright, Bato gave him a friendly slap to his shoulder and then led the way out. The sky was still bright and sunny and looked peaceful. As if nothing had happened. Zuko paused once he was in the sunlight. He let the sunshine soak him and warm him and took a deep breath as he closed his eyes. The running, the fear, it was all over. Ozai had finally been caught and Zuko could breathe easier.
