Jane woke to her alarm blaring at 6am. Groaning, she rolled over and silenced the dreadful noises coming out of the machine. Today was her first day of working as an instructor for the FBI. Part of her was still excited about the opportunity to teach new recruits about interrogation techniques, but another part was dreading the whole experience. After going for a run and actually taking the time to eat breakfast (Maura would be proud) Jane was off to the FBI academy.
She walked towards the door of the academy and was greeted by Agent Davies with his calming presence and caring blue eyes. After a month in Paris and her confusing feelings towards her best friend, Davies didn't have as much of an appeal to her as he did back in Boston. He saw that clearly written on her face and while disappointed, he understood and gave her a reassuring smile. They would stay friends but nothing more.
"Morning Jane, how we feeling about today?" he asked while holding the door open for her.
She shrugged walking into the building, "I'm alright. Excited to get started." She hoped by saying it enough times, eventually it would be true. Davies picked up on how her tone of voice did not match the words she was saying but chose not to mention it. He knew leaving home and everything you knew was hard but he had confidence she would grow to love Quantico and DC as much as he did.
Davies helped her set up her slides and videos waving a goodbye when the first recruits started to trickle in. With Davies' calming presence gone, her nerves started to fight their way to the surface. She focused on her breathing, just like Maura taught her and felt her heart rate slow.
When all the recruits found a seat, she turned to the front of the room. "Good morning, my name is Jane Rizzoli and I worked for Boston Police Department for many years in both the drug and homicide unit. I don't know why, but the people here at the FBI thought I would be a good person to teach interrogation techniques. We'll see if they were right." With an encouraging laugh from the recruits, Jane began her lecture and felt her enthusiasm begin to return.
By 5pm, Jane was done for the day and found herself so bored she actually took out the pots and pans her mother packed and cooked a homemade meal. She played light rock music from her phone as she hummed and moved around her kitchen. Once her meal was ready, she sat down and heard the ringing from her computer, telling her Maura was video-chatting her.
Jane opened her laptop and accepted the call, her best friend's smiling face filling up the screen.
"Hi Jane" she said, hesitation laced in her voice.
Jane sighed. "Look Maura, I want to apologize for yesterday. I was not in a good mood and I took it out on you. I feel much better today, promise." She crossed her fingers over her heart in a scout's honor to which Maura let out a laugh.
"It's alright, I understand. I should have realized me talking about my cases would be difficult for you. I wasn't thinking and I'm sorry."
The brunette aggressively shook her head. "No, Maura you should be able to talk to me about cases" she paused. "Maybe just not right now. I'll work on it and I'll let you know when I'm ready okay?"
The blonde nodded in agreement. "How was your first day?"
"It was nice. Started at 9 and finished by 5. I don't have to worry about calls coming in late at night or chasing down suspects. It's safe and nothing at all like BPD" Maura heard the wistfulness in Jane's voice but chose not to say anything. "I just hope my recruits actually learn something in the 12 weeks I have to teach them."
"I'm sure they will" Maura replied with confidence. "And what about Agent Davies" Maura wiggled her eyebrows but Jane noticed her voice had a slight tone to it. Something that only came out when the doctor was faking her emotions. Jane wondered what that meant.
"He's alright." Jane shrugged. "In Boston I liked the idea of him but I don't think it'll work out. I'm better off having him as a friend than anything more"
Maura let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding, another thing Jane picked up on. What was going on?
Before Jane could ask her friend about it, the blonde had her eyes narrowed, her gaze focused behind Jane's head and on her kitchen. "Wait a minute, did you cook? Something not frozen or pre-made?"
Jane laughed and nodded. "This whole having a job with regular hours gives me a lot of free time. I made chicken parm and spinach."
"So, you're telling me that all these years, all it took was you having a normal job to get you to cook and eat real food?"
The brunette shrugged laughing. "I guess so."
Maura rolled her eyes as her phone rang. She looked at the phone and then looked back at Jane, an apology written on her face.
Jane waved her hand in dismissal. "Go ahead, don't feel guilty. Murders in Boston continue and they need the expertise of the Chief Medical Examiner of the Commonwealth." Jane purposefully said Maura's title in an awful British accent to get her friend to smile and not feel guilty.
"Bye Jane, talk soon?"
"Of course, stay safe"
Maura nodded and the screen went dark leaving Jane alone in her apartment with nothing but a homemade meal to comfort her. When she was in class and teaching, she felt confident and powerful and the homesickness faded to the background. But here, in her empty apartment, the ache began to seep into her bones and she felt lost.
