Jane sat grading papers on her couch when her laptop began to ring with an incoming video call. She hit accept and her brother's face filled the screen.

"Hey Frankie, how's everything going?"

Frankie grinned. "Everything is great. Ma and Maura took over planning the wedding since Nina and I were totally helpless. They're doing a great job."

"That's great, Frankie. How's work?"

The younger Rizzoli shrugged. "It's good. Murderers keep on murdering. They still haven't filled Korsak's sergeant position so we have a lot more paperwork but the new detective, Emma George, is really great."

Jane bit her lip. "Frankie, if I tell you something do you promise to keep it a secret?"

"Cross my heart," Frankie replied crossing his index finger over his chest.

"I may have taken the sergeant's exam before I left. And I may have passed."

Frankie's eyes grew wide in surprise. "You what?"

"Before I left I was doubting my decision and the exam was coming up so I decided to take it. I didn't expect to pass on my first try but I did. It sure threw me for a loop."

Her brother nodded. "I could imagine. Are you still doubting your decision?"

Jane let out a sigh and gave a half-hearted shrug. "I'm not sure. I miss Boston and BPD more than I thought I would. Plus you, Tommy, TJ and ma" she paused looking past her computer screen.

"And Maura?"

Jane focused her gaze back on her brother's face. "What makes you say that?" she said sharply

Frankie put his hands up. "Woah, didn't mean to strike a nerve. Just that she's a mess. A well put together mess but still a mess. She thinks we don't notice but we do. The only thing that's different is that you're gone so we assumed that's why."

Jane paused taking in the information her brother had told her. She didn't realize Maura was struggling. They didn't talk as often as they used to but whenever they did she seemed happy enough. She had MEND and her job and all these new obligations so she never seemed unhappy. What else didn't Jane know?

"Anyways, that's not why I called" her brother's voice interrupted her thoughts.

Jane quirked an eyebrow. "Then why'd you call?"

"Well as you know I'm getting married next month."

"No, really?"

Frankie shot her a glare and she smiled for him to continue, faking the motion of zipping her lips.

"I was thinking about my groomsmen and about who I want standing next to me when I get married. And I realized you are always there for me. To defend me, protect me from ma, encourage me to go for my dreams and were always my role model. So, Jane, would you do me the honor and be my best man?"

"You do realize I am a girl?" Jane quipped but the megawatt smile and tears in her eyes gave her true feelings away.

"Yes, I'm aware you're a girl" he replied with a roll of his eyes. "You can wear a dress or a suit or jeans for that matter, I don't care. I just want you there when I pledge to love Nina forever."

"I would be honored to be your best man. I'm so proud of you, little brother."

Frankie smiled. "Good. Nina's sister is going to be her maid of honor and Maura is her bridesmaid. Obviously, Tommy is going to be my groomsman and TJ's the ring bearer. That's it for the bridal party, we want to keep it small."

"Sounds perfect. Is that all?"

"Um, no"

"Frankie?" Jane asked warily, picking up on his tone.

"Since you agreed to my best man, ma is going to come down to Quantico and help you find an outfit for the wedding. She'll be there next weekend. So sorry, I love you, bye"

"Frankie!" was all Jane could get out before the screen went dark. "Chicken" she muttered under her breath before sighing and going back to grading papers.

The weekend came faster than Jane would have liked and Jane awoke Saturday morning to incessant knocking at her front door.

Swinging open the door she grumpily yelled, "What!" before realizing it was her mother at the door.

Jane didn't even have time to apologize before her mother had launched herself at Jane, wrapping her arms around the taller woman's neck in a bone crushing hug.

"Geez ma, relax" Jane said into Angela's shoulder.

Angela pulled back and held Jane at arms length scanning her up and down. Her eyebrows creased in concern.

"Jane, you're in your pajamas."

"Yes, because normal people are asleep at this hour. God, ma what time did you leave Boston?"

Angela waved her hand. "It doesn't matter, I couldn't wait to come see you. I brought some homemade scones for breakfast," she said holding up a pink box with Jane's favorite bakery's name stamped on the side.

At that, Jane wrapped her arms around her mother. "I've missed you."

The elder woman was surprised by the confession as well as the hug. "I missed you too, Janie. How've you been."

Jane walked back to her kitchen, carrying the box of scones as she responded. "I'm alright. We have about 4 weeks left in this term and then a week off, which I'll be using to come to Frankie's wedding and spend time in Boston before coming back for next term."

"Any gentlemen callers?"

Jane groaned. "Gentleman callers? Really ma? What are we in the 1960s?"

"That's not an answer."

Jane let out a sigh. "No, ma, no gentlemen callers."

"Why not? You have the time don't you?" Angela pressed, intent on laying the groundwork for Maura's confession.

"Yeah, I guess" Jane replied picking absentmindedly at a scone.

"Then what's the problem?"

"I think I'm still trying to make this feel like home. Until I feel at home here I don't feel like I can date. Does that make sense?" Jane met her mother's gaze.

"Yes, that makes sense. You have to have your heart here and right now it's still in Boston." Angela paused assessing her daughter. "You sure that's all?"

Jane's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Yeah, what else would it be."

Angela shrugged. "Unresolved feelings for someone else maybe?"

Jane snorted. "And who exactly might those feelings be towards? Casey? I can assure you, ma, it definitely isn't Casey."

"I didn't say it was Casey."

"Then who?"

The way her daughter was on defense and agitated made Angela realize now was not the time to push Maura and love. Jane still needed more time to acknowledge that truth bomb.

"I guess I was wrong and it's just the fact that Quantico doesn't feel like home. Sorry for bringing unresolved feelings up, I'll stop talking about it now. We have shopping to do, so go get dressed and please try to limit your complaining."

Jane eyed her mother with apprehension. Angela Rizzoli rarely ever admitted she was wrong, something must be up. But Jane was in no mood to try and decode what she meant, so she opted for leaving the conversation alone and heading off to get dressed.

A painfully long day later, Jane was set with a nice suit and a cream blouse that complimented her skin tone perfectly and would blend well with Tommy and Frankie's tuxes. The next day, her mother was gone taking the feeling of happiness and home with her. Jane was left feeling lonelier than before and counting down the days until Frankie's wedding when Jane would have a full week in Boston with her family. And maybe she could get Maura to tell her why she was feeling so upset.
