Looking over the control panel Joker remarked while turning to face Edi
"Alright everything is under control and within working perimeters."
"Of course it is Joker, I would have told you if I had noticed anything that was not in order" Edi interjected in her matter of fact tone.
Joker sighed, "I miss the days when I was in full control of the ship." He saw Edi was about to say something "I know I still have control and you just monitor and assist when needed, but it's a pride thing really. I know I am the best pilot out there, I just don't like feeling like I am being babysitted. No offence Edi."
"None taken Joker. You know that I do what I am programed to do, just as you do what you are ordered to do. Free will comes second."
"Well lets drop the programs and get into our free time, because I have some jokes for you."
A smile comes across the AI's face. She did enjoy the time that Joker spent with her, trying to assist her in becoming less AI and more organic. She felt that he really did understand her better than anyone else on the ship. She felt he saw her still as part of the ship so maybe that is why he bonded so well with her. He loved The Normandy (both of them), he knew every part of this ship, so in a way that would mean that he knew her too. In the beginning he was stand offish toward her, but once he saw her usefulness he seemed to ease up.
"Fire away Joker" Edi's voice had a lightness to it, which Joker seemed to be able to bring forth on their personal time.
"We will start with classic dad jokes and work our way up."
"You are not a dad Joker." Edi stated in her matter of fact tone
"Its more a style of joke Edi, anyone can tell them. Remember we are talking about jokes here, don't be so literal."
Edi nodded her head to show her understanding and waited for Joker to deliver.
He sat there for a moment going through his mental collection. He liked jokes that had some word play in them, and he felt these would be good for Edi to help her with not being so literal.
"Today, my son asked "Can I have a book mark?" and I burst into tears. He's 11 and he still doesn't know my name is Joker." He grinned as he waited to see Edi's reaction, and when she didn't he took it as a personal challenge.
"Ok how about this one. My wife said nothing rhymes with "orange". I said, no it doesn't"
Edi tilted her head to the side and looked at Joker. "I am sorry I just don't see the humor in these. I can understand the idea, the joke uses a play on words, however I do not find it funny. I would however say they are clever in their use of language."
"That's what makes a dad joke. They are simple and often make you just want to groan because they really are not funny, they are what you would call corny. Lets try one more."
Edi would have told Joker no, however she was curious as to what Joker would try and produce next. She leaned against the panel and crossed her arms, trying to look relaxed.
"A child asked his father, "How were people born?" So his father said, "Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on." The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, "We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now." The child ran back to his father and said, "You lied to me!" His father replied, "No, your mom was talking about her side of the family."
"Perhaps jokes are not something I will fully grasp." Her tone a little disheartened. "I just am not seeing these things as humorous. I do not see the humor in the father saying what can only be seen as a negative comments about his wife and her family. What makes it worse is that he is saying these things to their child. What kind of …."
Joker put his hand up and waved it slowly past Edi's face "Its ok Edi I get it these are not the jokes you are looking for." He cocked his eyebrow and had a sly smile on his face at the end of the statement. He was proud of being able to use the nearly obsolete reference.
Edi looked at him curiously "I can tell by your expression that you have said something that you believe is witty, though I do not know what was witty about what you said."
"With all the things you know, there is still so much to learn. It's a reference to 'These are not the droids you're looking for' Pop culture from over 200 years ago. Yea I know it's out dated, but I love the line cause back then they had NO idea about droids or anything, and now...well now we have so much AI. I've watched the films and they are so simple and basic but such an interesting look at what they had in mind for space travel and aliens. They had some good ideas and others were just way off. For instance they were talking about The Force, which is basically bionics..."
Edi attention was caught by an alert to Torin's vital signals so she let her focus slide from Joker, she knew he would have no idea that her attention wasn't 100% on him, he was so engrossed into this subject of The Force, and she could always replay the conversation if needed.
EDI's connection was due to Cerberus wanting to be sure their investment was monitored, so within the augmentations that Torin carried, she also carried this connection. EDI wasn't sure if even Doctor Chakwas was aware of the connection.
EDI felt this connection as just another task for her when she was just an AI. Now however since becoming a near sentient being she felt that this connection was an invasion of privacy. She wasn't able to override or bypass so instead she tried to just get through it as quick as she could.
Heart rate 100 and rising, breathing elevated, Blood ethanol elevated above acceptable levels. Pain receptors functions limited. Balance compromised. Conclusion Commander Shepard is intoxicated, unfit for duty.
EDI's logic kicked in. She knew that Torin did not want to be disturbed until they reached their destination, which was still over 9 hours away, and there were ways to get sober instantly if anything was to happen that would require Torin.
She made a note to herself to keep an eye on the readings, but at this point would not disturb the commander.
"…and that is why Yoda was the most bad ass user of the Force." Joker concluded as EDI returned her full focus to him.
"That is fascinating Joker. To think humans were able to already envision such capabilities without the knowledge of element zero." She paused for a moment before continuing "So tell me more about this Yoda character"
