When Blood Loses Its Appeal – Chapter 3

"Hey Emmet, I may not have had as much as you, because we all know what you're like when you are in a feeding frenzy. But I had plenty." Edward joked. His head turning away from the group as he finished talking. Edward was hastily checking out the landscape around them.

Edward heard Emmet approaching him from behind. Purposeful footsteps, with a slight hurry to them. This made Edward turn back to face Emmet and when he did Emmet was no more than 6 feet away from him. Emmet stopped then and was looking intently at Edwards face.

"Your eyes seem awfully dull to me. Not like ours, not like you have just eaten?" Emmet questioned. This comment made Edward focus intently on Emmet's face and of course his eyes were glowing a fabulous golden colour. This always happened to all of them after they had just feasted on animal blood. Edward knew his eyes would not have the same glow as he had fed so little and had not enjoyed one moment of it.

"Hey man, how should I know why they ain't glowing. Don't ask me, I'm not the doctor." Edward retorted. As he did so he glanced across at Carlisle and saw he was wearing a curious look on his face.

"Emmet, that doesn't always happen. Most of the time yes, but not always." Carlisle said in a commanding tone. Emmet threw Carlisle a frown but turned and began to walk away from the group.

"Well you're the quack" Emmet said and followed this with bellowing laughter as he continued to walk back into the dense forest. In a second, he was out of sight.

Edward looked again at Carlisle and caught a fleeting glimpse of a concerned look on his face, but in a split second it was replaced with a smile. Carlisle offered his hand to Jasper and helped him to his feet. Jasper still seemed distracted by his own pleasure and Edward was sure he hadn't picked up on the moment of tension, which was now dissipating.

The three of them joined up and started to head after Emmet. After a few paces Edward could sense Carlisle holding himself back slightly by tugging onto his anorak with his left hand. Edward slowed his pace, and, in a few seconds, Jasper was 20 feet or so in front. Carlisle leant towards Edward briefly, his eyes lighting up both their faces as he did so.

"Come to the surgery this evening. Make an excuse with Bella but be there." he hissed. Edward knew he would be there. After all Carlisle had just lied to cover for him.
