"How dare you stand where he stood!", Harry roared as the sky above them fell apart.

"Tell them how it happened that night! Tell them how you looked him in the eye, a man who trusted you, and killed him!"

Light flashed before Snape's eyes, sudden blinding purples casting streaks behind his eyelids like paint on a canvas as the world tilted beneath his feet. His eyes came into focus, finally landing on the old man's warped and weary face stretched out mockingly before him. Snape's breath hitched, and he took a staggered step back as his mind screamed at the impossible sight in front of him. "Severus", the man whispered, twinkling eyes bleeding into his own until he could hardly distinguish where his being ended and Dumbledore's began. "Please".

He could not do it. Standing there on the stone floor facing the Chosen One, Severus Snape felt all of the strength leech out his body like poison, leaving only weakened tendrils of fatigue. He watched as if from someone else's eyes as Minerva pushed herself in front of the boy who lived, arm strewn out fiercely in a protective stance, her wrinkled face fixed fiercely to his own.

Giving into the pulsing urge stemming from his chest, Severus looked up into the boy's eyes.

Into those arrogantly defiant, brilliantly emerald eyes.

A moment and he forced his gaze to the sky.

Eyes snapping shut, Severus Snape summoned the last fading wisps of his energy and disappeared into clouds of grey smoke, as quickly as Dumbledore had been struck those many nights ago.

And if he were to open his eyes, he would find no difference.

Destined to be surrounded by the darkness he had sworn to set alight.
