CHAPTER 10 SHOCK
I don't know where I am. Everything is dark around me. I keep walking deeper into the trees, with trembling legs, trying to ignore that it is nonsense. There are no tracks to follow, the rest of his path is not there. The leaves of the trees move with the wind, the rain crashes against my cheeks.
I keep walking without thinking about anything ... I can't do anything. I must stay in motion, because if I stop then everything will be over... everything.
I walk and walk. I lose track of time as I make my way through the humidity of the grass and thickets, surely hours have passed but for me it's only seconds. Time stops, everything around me is the same. Darkness. I stumble often but I can't stop not now. I fight until I fall. I manage to roll on my side to try to breathe and I curl up on the wet grass. I don't know where I am.
Lying here I feel that time passes faster than I can perceive it. I do not know how many hours have passed, is there always so much darkness at night? ... I hope to see a light ray of moon that pierces the clouds, that lets me see the rain. A light to filter through the trees and reach me ... but there is not. I am alone in an immense darkness. I tremble even though I'm not cold.
"Hey! ... are you alright?" I hear a voice muffled by the distant thickets. I think it is talking to me. "Do you need help?" I cannot identify the voice. I think about answering but I am stunned. When I find some strength to answer back I don't hear it anymore.
:
The rain wakes me up shortly after. I don't think I have really slept. I have only sunk into a torpor that prevents me from thinking. I prefer to hold on to this daze with all my strength instead of being aware of what I prefer to ignore.
The drizzle bothers me a little, it's freezing. I stop hugging my legs to cover my face with my arms.
"Are you Okay?" I hear the voice again, this time it sounds closer. I try to breathe deeply. I remember that I must answer although I doubt I can.
"Olivia ... are you okay?" It doesn't stop raining. The water slides down my cheek. I try to gather strength to lift my face and that's when a light dazzles me.
"Olivia." It repeats my name. I look up at the face that was above me, at a height that seems humanly impossible to me. It is surely because my head is still on the ground
"Are you hurt?" I know the words have a meaning ... but I can only stare in bewilderment.
"Olivia, I am officer Karen Davids." The name is not familiar to me. "I am a homicide detective. Are you hurt? Do you know where you are?" I try to stand up but the only thing I manage to do is sit down. I look around. Trees and grass ... in the distance I can see a statue but I am not able to identify it. I am lost. A tall man approaches. I see how he says something to the woman and with his black eyes examines me for a moment. He shrinks a little and lifts me off the ground. He takes me in his arms with an agile and fast movement.
"Come on." I'm in his arms, lifeless. As he jogs with the woman next to us. Somewhere inside I know I should be scared by the fact that a stranger is taking me somewhere, but I have no sense left to react.
"I don't think she hurt."
"She hasn't stop muttering 'He is gone'." Am I really saying that out loud? I bite my lips. I am somewhere where the rain does not touch m. I recognize the sound of an engine and the movement lulls me.
"Olivia?" Another voice brings me back to reality. "Hello, I'm Dr. Kyle Beresford, are you hurt?" It took me a minute to think about that. Finally I recognize someone. I'm still confused that question has a different meaning for me.
"Liv." My name, again. I react to the nickname ... my name. He waits. One of his blond eyebrows raised, deepening the wrinkles on his forehead.
"I'm not hurt." I finally I manage to talk, to lie. However, I have answered the truth taking into account what he wants to know. He places his warm hand on my forehead and his fingers pressed inside my wrist. I watch as he moves his lips as he counts my pulse with his watch. I am more aware that there are people around me but I do not recognize anyone. They seem worried.
"What happened to you?" He asks.
"I don't know." I died.
"You are not injured. You are just exhausted. It would be better if you sleep here and tomorrow they will take you to your house. The doctor says looking at his watch again. "Actually, later today."
"Wasn't detective Stabler with you?" I shake my head and cringe. The sound of his second name frees what has been biting me from the inside. A pain that hit me leaving me breathless. I get stunned and I let myself down into what seems to be a bed.
"Let her rest." Everyone leaves the room.
