-I absolutely love this story and need to give it a lot more love :) ...-
I had talked to June for a good 30 minutes before I got pulled away to do an assessment on a few of the trauma victims from this morning. Most were fine, but one woman was in bad shape... She was in critical condition and I wasn't sure how long she was going to last. Her heart rate was abnormally low and her body was pale.
I hate when patients pass on in our care, but unfortunately it is a thing. I try everything in my power to figure out what is wrong and I find the issue quickly. There is a hole in her heart and if I didn't fix it, this woman would die. I call for an emergency surgery and within minutes I am working to save her life. She was having massive amounts of internal bleeding and I have to have someone continuously put pressure so I can close the hole without her bleeding out.
Miraculously, I'm successful and am covered in blood. I keep her here until I have a steady heartbeat and then I close her up and send her to recovery. I then turn to everyone and am ready to question them. "How did neither of you see that she had that hole in her heart? You told me she went in for x-rays this morning..." I removed my bloody gloves and scrub top.
"Dr. Samson... We're unsure of how we missed it, but trust when I say it wasn't on purpose..." Dr. Rebecca Kelly told me, she was an attendant and someone who usually did general surgery. I sigh, it was like I was better at everyone's jobs here. "Well... Thank you for calling me before that woman died in her room for a simple problem with a simple fix..." I'm very stubborn and sarcastic yes, but having a good heart and no malice didn't mean they were doing their jobs correctly.
"Of course doctor..." She looked embarrassed, but I was known for putting doctors in their place, so she should have seen this coming. "I now have my own patients to attend to..." I leave and get new scrubs on, throwing mine in the bio bin to be washed and cared for properly. I'm still very peeved, I had those unprofessional interns and then that simple mistake. I know I'm sounding harsh, but this job is about saving lives and if you aren't being 100% sure about your work, then why work at a place where detailed observation was crucial.
After an extensive list of surgeries, I needed to wind down. My body was still feeling the effects of my frustration. I go to the rooms with all my patients that I'm required to see. When I'm finally back at June/Blossom's room again I feel some of the weight lifted off me, I was unsure about it, but I was looking forward to seeing her again. I have never been excited to work with a patient before. It had been over 4 hrs since I left, and a lot had went down since then.
When I get there, I see Blossom, Bubbles and a new woman with dark hair who looked increasingly familiar. I realize that she was the woman I saw during my run this morning. I knock on the door and all three look at me. Blossom's eyes brighten and her smile makes it's way on to her features. "Good afternoon Blossom and visitors..." I greet and enter the room. The dark haired woman greets me instantly, "You must be my sister's doctor right? I'm Danielle, but I prefer BC or what my sisters call me, that's Buttercup..." She brings her hand out for a shake, I take it and her grip in surprisingly firm.
"Yes, I am Dr. Samson... I'm here to check up on my patient..." I smiled, the first genuine one today, in her direction and Blossom's face flushed in happiness. "How are you?" I asked her and she smiled brightly. "I'm doing well Dr. Brick... I noticed that your mood is different, are you okay?" Blossom asked in concern. "Just a very eventful day..." I chuckled and Blossom scoots closer in my direction. "Tell me! I've been so bored today!" Her eyes sparked in fascination.
"A few doctors failed to see a hole in a woman's heart and the hospital was full to the brim with trauma victims... I also had to do 2 heart surgeries and a removal of a growth in someone's liver..." I explained as I look at her charts, all looked well in that department. "Wow, how did everything go?" Blossom asked and I looked into her eyes. "Everything went well, nobody died in my care yet thankfully..." I'm more cheerful than I was.
Buttercup spoke up, "You're a really nice to my sister I see... She wouldn't shut up about ya actually..." She was smiling. "Of course, why wouldn't I be?" I asked and she shrugs. "Her last two doctors were assholes... Dumb fuckers treated her like a science experiment..." She chuckled and I raised a brow in intrigue. She spoke like my brother Butch, so it threw me off a little bit. "I'm going to give her the care she needs, not the care I want her to have..." I assure her.
"He lets me know about his surgeries... I'm very glad that someone actually lets me have my love of the work of medical care..." Blossom said with a even brighter smile. "Well, I enjoy sharing it with you..." I nod and her flush deepens. "You're the first doctor I've seen who is this nice..." Bubbles jumps in. "I get told I'm too serious sometimes... Especially by certain people..." I joke with a small smirk aimed at Blossom. She lets out a giggle, trying to hide it to the best of her abilities.
"You're really damn young, I can tell..." Buttercup added. "I am..." I nod, I was actually enjoying this conversation quite a bit. "How old are you?" Bubbles asked in curiosity. "I'm 26, I just finished my schooling faster than most..." I say and the two sisters of my patient looked at me in disbelief. "So you're a genius?" Bubbles questions me and I can't help but laugh. "A genius, no... I'm just gifted..." I hate when people say I'm a genius for just being smarter than most, there were people far smarter than myself.
"Come to think of it... I think I know why my sister likes you so much now..." Buttercup smirks in her sister's direction. Blossom's face is even redder now, and she has an unmistakable blush on her face. I on the other hand wasn't sure what she was aiming at right there and looked at her in pure confusion. "Pardon me... But what?" I asked her, still confused. "Oh nothing..." Buttercup is still smirking at Blossom. Blossom's reaction was to look at me frantically, "Don't mind my sister, she's just fairly blunt with her observations!" She sounded flustered, I had no clue why.
"I can see that..." I chuckled, I was still unsure about what they were talking about. "You need to sit down, I can tell you're exhausted..." Blossom now scolds me and I playfully roll my eyes again. "Yes doctor..." I say with a smirk and her blush is instantly back. I heard her sisters holding back from giggling. I pulled up a chair to sit down and Blossom was still blushing. "Anything else?" I asked her playfully. "Yeah..." She developed a huge playful smile and reached out to poke my nose.
I'm caught completely off guard because I've never had a patient openly touch me like that. "Did you just poke my nose?" I question and now she is holding back from bursting out into a fit of laughter. "I may have..." She said innocently. I just take my pen and poke her nose right back. She finally lets her laughs out, I smiled. I'm glad she was doing this, because I want her happy in my care.
"Whoever is dating you must be lucky..." Buttercup grinned, Blossom mildy glares, probably at her forwardness I'm sure. "I'm only taken by my cat, no dates for me here..." I shrugged, I began writing on her charts, I was inconspicuously checking her vitals, her blood pressure, and her oxygen tank function. "A hot shot surgeon and no one in your life but your cat? How?" Buttercup asked in disbelief. "No interest I guess..." I chuckled, I've never told people this, but with these three it just came out of me.
"What do you do instead?" Bubbles asked shyly as I finished my writing. "To be honest, I spend most of my time here and spend the rest of my hours resting at home..." I page an intern to come collect her files for the evening. "All work and no play?" Buttercup chuckled and I can't help but chuckle too. "Unfortunately you're correct, but that's something I do by choice..." I see Lee come in to get the files and she looked at me in shock, she's never seen me chat casually with my patients.
"Thanks Lee..." I give her the files and she lingered here for a second before leaving. "Doesn't constant work get tiring?" Bubbles asked in concern. "No, the work itself is already exhausting so I just roll with the punches until I am at home... Helps me sleep... I do actually get out once in awhile actually..." I feel my shoulder stiffen, the left was always the trouble one, but I'll just ice and heat it when I get home.
I then feel a sharp pain, so i needed to take care of this now. I get up, I can hide discomfort well enough. "Well, unfortunately I have to go, but I will see you tomorrow..." I say to Blossom who smiled and nodded. "Have a good day!" Blossom says happily and I wave on my way out. I needed to get home and take care of this before my shoulder affected me tomorrow.
I clock out for the night and head towards home.
