CHAPTER 54 LET ME
—The umbilical cord is working fully to channel the necessary nutrients from your body to the embryo. Oxygen, amino acids, fat, and sugars play an essential role in this incredible project of building a human being.— He keeps talking while I continue to process the information slowly... so slowly.
— Right now the heart is a simple tube with few and uncoordinated beats. These will become more regular as each week goes by/— heart? ... so there is a new heart growing within me? —Liv ... are you listening to me?—
—Yes ... I'm sorry is that ... it's too much information. I'm sorry.— I apologize for the tears that are already running down my cheeks, and he just laughs at me.
—That's ok. All these emotions that range from an uncontrollable euphoria, to a big fear, they are perfectly normal. They are the hormones speaking and, physically, you will also have remarkable changes.— He tries to keep his explanation in an attempt to calm me down. — But nothing out of the ordinary, some abdominal pain, also in the lower part of the back, you can compensate for this with lukewarm baths, not hot, lukewarm. And whatever comes I will help you, for that I am your doctor.— I try to stop crying.
—Thank you.— I wipe my tears with my slid. —But I can't accept that.— He hands me a tissue and gives me a warm but strong look.
—Enough with that. Let me help you.— He says now in a totally serious way.
—But...— I trie to fight back.
—I know I cannot force you, and I am not planing to force you, but I am asking you to please let me do this.— The warm of his voice gives me so much peace. — I know you don't notice but, I've been seen you help so many people over the years. Please, let someone help you this time.—I nod not having much arguments to fight back with. —Thanks.—
An awkward silence begins to surround us but it is interrupted by the roar of my stomach... Well, I didn't really feel my guts move. I think it's not my stomach this time.
—I'm sorry. I'm hungry too.— He apologizes, standing up and taking off his robe. I like not being the only one to whom her body gives her away.
—Let me invite you something to eat.— he says taking his keys.
—No thanks, I accepted too much pampering already.—
—Pampering is good for you.— He says as if it actually was a doctor's recommendation. —What do you crave?— I can list a million things on that topic. I put on my coat thinking what I want to eat.
—Will you be my nutritionist too?— I ask giving him a look.
—Sure.— I just let out a sigh cause I wasn't asking him but he is intelligent. He smiles again and walks with me to the exit of the place.
Getting out of the building comforts me, my lungs fill with pure-free-of-hospital-smell air, which I greatly appreciate.
—So.. what do you want to eat?— He asks.
—I don't know.— I answer with sincerity. —This is your neighborhood, I guess it is your call doctor.— And it seems he is going to decide my food for now on, so.
—Ok. I'll ask you one more time, call me Kyle.—
—I have always call you Doctor Beresford. I'm not use to first name bases.— And I am not sure since when he stoped calling me Detective Benson.
—You could try.— He pushes. Somehow I like him pushing. He is the first one to treat me like a normal person in a long time. Not like everyone else. I can't blame them, I haven't been exactly a normal person the past weeks but... I would like to be treated as one.
—I'll try I swear.— He gives me an expectant look. —I swear I will true, Kyle.— And I highlight his name.
—Good. We'll eat in one of my favorite coffee shop, do you mind walking a little?—
—No.— I'm really quite used to walking around the city, it's not something tiring once you've done it a thousand times. Sure, the snow doesn't help me much. I managed to slip a couple of times on the way to the coffee shop, but I didn't fall, I just lost my balance a bit. I've never been a clumsy person but right now I am not my usual me.
—I hope you like the food.—
It is a small place with a warm decoration, each of the tables is decorated with a dim light and I have to say that the sofas are very comfortable. Nice, cozy and modern place. A young woman approaches the table and offers us the small menu. I dedicate myself to reading it calmly, the most outstanding thing is the amount of different drinks they have, from American coffee to exotic teas with something called cassava, whatever that is. I can tell from the image they are little balls that float in the drink.
The food resumes to bread, sandwiches, quesadillas, eggs, cakes, chocolates, pizza. They don't seem a bug deal but I have to confess that I have craved everything.
—If you let me recommend you. Bubble green tea is very good and healthy... ahm... and for food personally I always ask for...—
—The club sandwich.— He is interrupted by the woman who was next to us, I didn't even realize she was still there.
—Hello.— The doctor greeted her politely.
—Hi Kyle. Long time no see.— The woman says with a cute smile on her face.
—I've been buried in work.— He looks down and then takes his attention to me.—...ahm, This is Olivia, a friend and a patient.—
—Hello.— I say as soon as the woman turns to see me.
—Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Sophie.— She greets me kindly, extending her hand to shake mine.
—She is the owner of the place.—Doctor...Kyle explains to me.
—The pleasure is mine.— I answer and sit down again, for a few seconds I feel somewhat uncomfortable. I feel misplaced, just as I didn't want to feel, I don't fit in here.
—Two club sandwiches then?—
—Yes, and two Bubble green teas, the organic one.— He adds.
—Perfect. They are coming.— The woman turns to ask the waitress for the order, then she looks back and places her hand on the doctor's shoulder.
—I'm glad to see you again.— She says, observing him with some sadness. That look I know very well... it is identical to the one I have received this last month, it is a look full with fear, sadness and hurt.
—Me too.— He replied, returning her a grateful look and taking her hand from her shoulder to move it.
—Do you have plans for tonight.— The woman pushes making him evidently uncomfortable.
—No.—
—You know that you can come with me and my brother right?— Oh I know that invitation.
—Thanks. I will sleep early.—
—Ok.— It seems she will stop pushing. —I hope you like the food, Olivia.— She says, looking at me.
—I am sure I will. Thanks.—She smiles at me and then gives Kyle one more look before turning around and going back to her work.
The need to ask if everything is okay invades me, but I don't think it's the right thing to do, I don't want to get into his personal life.
—Christmas Eve...— He says with reluctance and even a little annoyance. —Do you have all your preparations ready?— He asks.
—No. But with what I bought today I think it will be enough.— I trie to make a joke. Poorly.
—Don't you think your guests are expecting a turkey and salad?— I let out a listless laugh.
—I'm not expecting any guests.—
