Chapter 56 STORM
—So now I am Kyle?— He says in a funny way.
—Well, I think you have too much confidence to be dragging me around like that.— I explain annoyed. I notice how my voice is stronger than I pretended because the wind in my ears does not allow me to hear clearly and I suppose neither does he.
—Do you want to die of cold in the middle of this storm?!— And he is starting to shout as well.
—No!—
—Well then, let's go!— He takes my arm again and begins to walk, this time I don't fight back, because I really don't have any more options. This storm is starting to look bad. —My apartment is at the next block.— It is not a long walk under the snow, but it is long enough to reach the entrance of the building with a white slim layer on the hair.
—Come in please.— he says covering me until I get through the huge door. I walk quickly and I feel how my shoe slips on the lobby's floor but I can't do much.
—God!— I listen to my scream waiting to feel the cold floor, but he stops my falling.
—Watch out! ...— He holds me tightly with his hands under my arms. —Are you alright?—
—Yes.— I try to stand up again taking the fright off me. —Thank you.— I do not let go until I am sure that I am already standing firmly.
I look around to find a very elegant lobby, marble floor, high ceilings, few paintings adorning the smooth beige walls, in the background a couple of elevators with mirror decorations on the doors.
—Come on, let's go upstairs.— The doctor says, lifting his cheese off the ground, he might have thrown it while saving me.
I follow him to one of the elevators and, while wee wait for it to arrive, I look at myself in the mirror; my hair is covered in snow that is beginning to melt down making me shiver. The elevator door opens and he takes a step inside. Without really planning it I am paying attention to everything he does to imitate him. It is something that, as a detective, I have done for a long time; be aware of the details, especially when I find myself without my partner. He takes out a key and puts it in the lock that is inside the elevator, then he presses the buttons dialing the number 16 and turns the small key around, the elevator closes its doors and begins to ascend.
—I wasn't expecting that storm.— He comments trying to avoid the awkward silence.
I just nod not wanting to say a word. I rather prefer to concentrate on the fact that I am starting to get dizzy. The movement of the elevator does not help much... I feel that our ascend is eternal. Involuntarily, feeling my lack of balance, my hand flies to my head and the other rests on the closest wall.
—Are you okay?— He asks me, placing one of his warm hands on my back. I just shake my head. —Take a deep breathe.— he commands as he places both his hands on each of my shoulders, which helps me to feel more stable. I inhale forcefully filling my lungs with cold air and then let it out slower. I keep my eyes closed trying to make my head stop spinning. Finally the elevator stops making my knees bend a little.
—Olivia, deep breaths.— As the doors open the fresh air comes in helping me with my breathing, which now has become a bit heavy. Suddenly I no longer feel my feet on the ground and a few seconds later I feel my back on some soft surface.
—Liv.— I keep trying to breathe deeply, a strange aroma of alcohol helps me, until I manage to open my eyes to, once again, face the doctor's eyes full with concern. This is the million time on the past two months that we've been in this exact situation. —Better?— I place my hands on the surface, which now that I can say is a sofa. I turn a little to get my feet on the ground, trying to stabilize myself.
—Yes.— I say nodding my head. —16th floor. I think the height affects me.— Back in the precinct I only ride the elevator six flours maximum.
—So it seems. Tell me something, have you been dizzy lately?— I remain silent thinking a bit. I remember having had a couple of dizziness in recent days, not so strong to throw me down but I have had them.
—Yes, a little.— He moves away from me and walks somewhere. I take the opportunity to continue with the inspection of the place. I find myself in the middle of a living room, two sofas and an armchair are placed around a nice coffee table that has a couple of books on it; in front of me a huge flat-screen TV hanging on the wall above a fireplace that is closed behind two glass doors. How I wish it were lit. I turn around and I can see the spacious place, a huge window covered with a closed white curtain blocking the view. Not far away I see a large table surrounded by chairs that match the decoration, the most prominent colors are a dark brown and white. Everything is so clean and fancy. A piece of furniture in the background with a couple of frames gains my attention so as a couple of pictures hanging on the wall. They give this place the perfect warmth.
—Here, this will help.— The doctor... ahm... Kyle comes out of an arch next to the dining room with a small bottle in his hand and a spoon.
—What is it?—
—Ginger— he says as he fills the spoon with the viscous liquid.
—For what?— I ask trying to hide my grimace.
—Nausea and dizziness.— Oh, I can feel the nausea attack me immediately. I hadn't thought about them until he mentioned them. He lifts the spoon and puts it near my mouth, I doubt a bit but at the end I drink the liquid. It doesn't taste bad, but I can't say I really like it. Wait a minute, did I just let him fed me the medicine like a little child?
—Thanks.—
—Let's see what they say about the weather.— He sits next to me and takes the remote control to turn on the television. I look as he makes some zapping until he reaches the news channel.
'A cold front came through the east of the state causing tonight's strong storm. It is recommend for NYC residents to remain inside their homes this Christmas Eve. The flights have been canceled and diverted for safety. Try to contact your relatives if you were expecting someone...'
I listen to the man giving the news with a bit of discouragement. I was clear that there was a storm but I didn't expect it to be that strong.
—We are having a white Christmas this year.— Kyle's voice distracts me from my thoughts, I turn to see him but he is already looking towards the window. I turn around and the view amazes me. I am not sure when did he open the curtains cause I didn't feel him move from his place. But now I can see through the window at falling snow. It is falling so heavy that it makes it almost impossible for me to see the lights of the nearest buildings.
—I guess we are having Christmas Eve dinner together.—
