She loved the beach. But she hated the fact that she couldn't truly enjoy it. So she decided to isolate herself.
Kagome stood on the top of a cliff jutting into the water as she inhaled a salty breath. Her eyes were closed. She let go of all emotion. Her pain didn't even exist anymore. The miko was at peace.
"Hey! Higurashi-sempai!" two near identical voices called out to her in unison.
For all of ten minutes.
Exhaling noisily, the former time traveler growled under her breath as she glared down at the twin gingers waving to her on the beach below. One of them was holding a beach ball.
"You shouldn't be up there by yourself!" one of them stated, a superior tone in his tone. She hadn't spent enough time around them yet to differentiate between the two, but she knew that when she could, she would enjoy screwing with their brains just to piss them off.
"You could get hurt and no one would even know!" the other contributed to the conversation with a note of real concern in his voice.
"Go away. I can take care of myself!" the senior snapped, crossing her arms and staring out at the ocean. The sun was starting to go down. This trip from hell would be over in a few hours. 'Finally...'
She hadn't even gotten to swim...
Two sets of elbows dug into her shoulders, throwing her off balance. When did they sneak up on her?!
"Wow, I can see why you came all the way up here," one of the twins murmured, leaning heavily on the incensed miko.
"Yeah, the view is pretty nice," the other finished, smiling down at the girl when she sneered angrily up at him. "You have a good eye for that, Higurashi-sempai."
"... Which one are you," Kagome grumbled, earning identical cheshire grins as they scooted away from her. They wrapped around eachother in an intricate fashion.
"That's no fun. You have to guess."
"I think not," the older girl immediately deadpanned, turning away from the twins and ignoring them as they poked and prodded her.
"Come on. Guess! Guess!"
"How about if you guys don't stop badgering me, I'll chuck you over the cliff," the former time traveler ground out, reaching up to grasp an ear each and dragging them over to the edge.
"Okay! Okay! We're sorry!"
She let them go and turned to point down the cliff with a bland expression. "Now, go play with the girls that paid to go on this trip with you. I'm not interested in whatever game you two are trying to play."
"Well, that's no fun," the ginger on her right grumbled, crossing his arms while his twin sighed and shook his head.
"We were going to tell you that we're trying to find out Haruhi's weakness."
"And... how does that concern me," Kagome sighed, still staring off to the side. In the distance, she watched a wave crash onto the shore.
"So, you don't know?" They spoke at the same time in a way that set her teeth on edge. Twins just bothered her...
"Nope. I've only spoken to her once or twice. I don't even know why she wears the male uniform," the miko shrugged, taking note of the way they tensed up at that. She smirked inwardly.
"You know-!"
"-that she's a girl?"
"I knew the moment I saw her a few weeks ago." When they looked ready to interrogate, she added, "I'm not gonna say anything. It's not my business."
Finally tired of the two invading her personal slice of paradise, she sauntered back to the edge she'd climbed up and started back down to the beach. At this rate, she was going to start attracting attention if she stayed away much longer.
The twins scarmbled after her. By far, Higurashi Kagome was the strangest girl they'd ever talked to. And that was counting Haruhi.
Kagome allowed the younger boys to trail after her for a moment before an evil smirk crossed her face. Bending down, she scooped up a pile of wet sand and let it start to drip through her fingers. She then spun around and splattered one of her new shadows in the face, taking careful note of his aura.
"HEY! What the hell was that for?!" he shouted angrily while his brother snickered for a second. "Kaoru! Don't laugh!"
"I'm sorry! It was funny!"
"Ah..." the senior girl sighed, pointing at the twin covered in sand, "So you're Hikaru, and you're," she moved her finger to the giggling one, "Kaoru. Good to know."
They stared at her with wide eyes, shocked that she'd found a way to get them to slip up.
"That's cheating!"
"You never laid any ground rules out," the miko replied blandly, waving off their protests as she caught sight of everyone else. And was it just her, or were there a lot of shellfish on the beach?!
"It's not like that's going to help you when we get back to school!" Hikaru hissed, still trying to unclog sand from his ears.
"I grew up on a shrine, so I was taught to read auras at a young age," Kagome countered, a smirk curling onto her face. A little white lie wouldn't hurt. She'd been taught by Kaede and Miroku. "Despite the fact that the two of you look the same, you're auras are not. I have that tiny little advantage." With a pat to his shoulder, she sauntered off, leaving the boys surprised at that little tidbit of info.
"She still didn't have to throw sand at me," the boy grouched, earning a sigh from his younger brother.
"Gotta admit, though, it was a smart idea," Kaoru spoke quietly.
The two boys shared a glance, then smirked and shook their heads.
What do you do?
Meanwhile, Kagome reached up and massaged her temples. Twins gave her a headache.
