CHAPTER 62 BLESSING

We went down to Melinda's office together. I try my best to hide how much his smile bothers me as he tells me how good they spent Christmas Eve. I don't want it to affect me more, so I prefer to ignore him. I know he notices it because he remains silent while waiting for some kind of response to his conversation but since I do not give it he does not insist more.

Melinda gives us very valuable information regarding the body. I still feel nauseous being in the morgue so I try to hold my breath while I pay attention to what she tells us. Samuel makes a couple of questions and she answers him, they are really involved in the case. I feel more misplaced than ever but I think they don't realize it.

—I'll let the team now.— Samuel says walking towards the exit. I stay behind a couple of seconds controlling my nausea and waiting for him to keep going because I really don't want any more uncomfortable talks in the elevator.

—There is the bathroom, Liv.— Melinda tells me noticing my discomfort. I just walk away from the corpse and out of the office to be able to take some fresh air. I watch her move around cleaning a few things, taking off her gloves, and soon she is by my side with a glass of water.

—Do you want?— She offers me kindly. I take it and thank her with my eyes. —Did you have something for dinner last night?— She asks me leaning against the wall and playing with a hair tie that she has in her hand. The huge spaghetti plate appears on my mins.

—Oh yes... I did.—

—Good. I thought about you, I would have liked to be with you.—

—I had a good time and I was not alone.— I remember the doctor moving from one place to another in his huge apartment. I know that I was not alone and also for the first time in a long time, I really did not feel out of place. The silence catches my attention so I look up to meet Melinda's surprised expression, as if waiting for me to tell her more but I pressed my lips together, sealing them.

—Who were you with?— She asks the question aloud.

—Ahm... I went to see Dr. Beresford, and... well... the storm gave me no choice.—

—Kyle?!— She says his name with evident surprise.

—Yes, do you know him?—

—Yes of course. How is he?— She asks me with a worried expression.

—Fine... I guess. Why?—

—No reason.— She lies. I can tell. —Did you go to see him regarding a specific case?— The doubt invades me. She is trying to get information but she is not giving away what she knows.

—No. I run into him at the grocery store and he offered to check me out.—

—He's a very good person. And I'm glad you've already got a check-up. What did he tell you? how is everything going?—

—Are you a detective now?— I say with a mocking tone as she doesn't stop her questions. She just laughs but keeps her eyes on me waiting for an answer. —Everything is fine. He prescribed a couple of vitamins and I have to follow a special diet.— I say without much encouragement remembering the diet stuff.

—Congratulations.— She says flashing me a wide smile and taking her hand to my shoulder. —You will see that time will fly away. Promise me you will enjoy it as much as you can.— She says putting a hand on my belly and showing happiness in her eyes.

—I'll try.—

—Liv.—She says with a scolding tone on her voice. —What's wrong? Is there a problem?— she asks me with a little caution.

—No, not really.—

—Look, I know that maybe it is none of my business, but I'm worried. What is happening? Is it with the father?— I look away at the white wall in front of us avoiding any visual contact with her. The lump in my throat is already aching, preventing me from speaking and as much as I try to undo it... I can't. So I just nod my head. —He doesn't want it?— she keeps guessing. Awfully.

—It's not that.— I manage to say not linking her assumptions.

—So? Olivia, nobody force you to... you know.— She ask the question trying to find the correct words.

—God no!.— I hasten to answer her. I know what she means and I don't even want her to have that idea. I don't want to get the idea myself. I've always been terrified of living the same nightmare that my mother lived.

—Who is the father?— She asks somewhat relieved to know that that was not the reason. I let out a big sight and give up.

—Elliot.— I say bluntly. I feel the tears slide down the cold skin of my cheeks and the pain in my chest appear aggressively. I hear her take a breath at the news.

— Oh Liv.— Her hand gets to my shoulder again. —That is great news.— I turn to see her and I can see that on her face there is not really an expression of sadness but, on the contrary and to my surprise, it is an expression of happiness. —What a better gift than a son of him?— I try to stop my tears to. Keep falling without much success. —I know that death is a terrible thing to face but, the body is just a container, believe me, I live surrounded by them. The true essence is the soul and his is still here more now than ever.—

—I'de like to believe that. But his absence is killing me.— The tears continue to escape as it is the first time I say is out load.

—It's obvious Liv, you were really used to his presence, physical one. But now you must look for his spiritual presence because it is here.—

—I didn't know this spiritual side of you.— I say letting a nervous laugh out and making her laugh too.

—Ey, I am more than just the forensic here.— She says faking annoyance. —Promise me you will try and be grateful for this little person who he has left you.— Her eyes are filled with tears that soon fall down her face and she is soon taking me into her arms.

—I am. I am just assimilating it.— I say returning her hug.

—It gives me great joy to know this, Liv.— Her expression reveals the truth in her words. She is so happy. And she knowing makes me feel better.

I drive with caution to my apartment. I just made a stop at the pharmacy to buy the necessary vitamins and a chocolate donut that I eat on the way. Tonight the snow is not falling, there is just a slight rain. The case continues its course with the help of Melinda and hopefully they will be able to solve it soon. I have not been much of a help and the captain noticed it sending me back to rest. I didn't complain. I promised I will be more active tomorrow.

I park the car and get up to my place. Melinda's words keep hanging around my mind. I know that she is right and that my pregnancy is something extremely positive and important. Especially now. I must make the most of it. Her words gave me the strength I was missing. And confessing the situation to her has actually taken a big weight off my chest. I am going to enjoy to the fullest this blessing that life has given me.
