CHAPTER 74 FLOATING
I let my body float on my back as the sea slightly rocks me on place. I keep my eyes on the slowly passing clouds while I try to imagine each of the things that his children and his mother have told me the night before. It is not difficult for me to visualize him with little Dickie playing soccer or baseball, but I never imagined him playing Barbies with Elizabeth or having a tea party with Maureen and Kathleen. That makes me laugh over and over again.
I also know that he was a bad loser, a whole Saturday playing Monopoly with his family and he always ended up annoyed. Apparently, even though he bought every property he landed in, he never managed to match three colors. I do remember playing poker with him and the guys at the station, he was competitive as hell and he never lost. We partnered up against Munch and we always left him clan. Later we would go to the bar and invite the drinks with that we earned. We were always partners at everything.
Telling them some anecdotes has also given me peace. Lizzie made sure to know what his father used to eat on his daily basis and laugh at learning that there were rarely any greens on his diet. Fast food, Chinese, hamburgers, and of course I didn't forget to tell them about the best hot dogs in the city. None of which Elliot would have let his kids have unless it was weekend.
I let them know how, when we were working out of the station, we deviated to the corner of 72nd Street and Fifth Avenue to buy hot dogs to then walk through the park to the Alice statue to eat and relax for a goof half an hour.
They made me promise to take them there when we go back to the city. A thing I would gladly do. I focus on this memories trying to make them stick to my brain while listening to the waves crash as they hit shore.
—Hey! ... Liv!— I hear my name in the distance which makes me stand up again. The sand under my feet was closer than I expected as the sea has dragged me closer to the shore than I thought. I turn looking for who calls me and when I see Lizzie I crouch in the water and just raise my hand to salute her.
—Your phone has been ringing!— She yells loudly, showing me the cell phone and covering her view with her left hand, apparently the sun bothers her. I really hope it's not from the station. I know I asked for days off but I'm sure if needed they will call me.
—oh ... thanks! Leave it on the towel. I'll get out in a moment.—I stay down as much as I can so that the water covers my body up to my neck.
—Ok— She says dropping the device on the towel. —By the way, breakfast is almost ready.— She makes me know with a smile on her face still covering the sun light from her eyes.
—I'll be there!— I assure her, managing so that the waves that come behind me do not submerge me too much. She just nods and moves away again towards the house. I wait until I see her disappear inside and then I rush to get out of the water. I move my wet hair back and run for my towel. I take the cell phone being careful not to get it too wet and I check the missed calls. I look at the screen and I see that the only contact that appears on incoming calls is Kyle's. Thank goodness it's none from work. But suddenly the doubt invades me, did I have a medical appointment and have I forgotten it? ... no, I'm sure not, because I just had one before I came here.
—Damn it.— Yes, it wasn't medical related. I've agreed to have breakfast with him. —Not again.— I scold myself.
—Olivia!— I hear Bernie's voice, which reminds me that I'm still uncovered, so I rush to wrap the towel around my torso.
—Hey! ... good morning!— I say finding her in the kitchen window.
—Good morning! You like pancakes right?— She says raising her shovel.
—oh ... yes!— I shout back at her. —I love them.— Suddenly my stomach rumbles just by imagining the food. —I'am coming!— I tell her, walking quickly on the sand, which is now hotel than before so I speed up. I get to the few steps that lead to the house's entrance.
—Let me help you.—A sleepy Richard appears through the door with a bucket of water. I smile and hold my towel tightly while I soak my feet with the water that he pours on them to clean the sand off.
—Thank you.— I walk carefully so as not to slip and dry them with the entrance mat and immediately the aroma invades me, making my stomach roar again.
—Someone is hungry!— Richard says laughing, and I can feel the blood rise to my cheeks. I just give him a look of false annoyance.
—The sea is delicious, isn't it?— Lizzie says. I just nod my head and then I notice that my hair is dropping still wetting the floor.
— I'm going to get dry.— I say, excusing myself. Once I am in the small room I hurry to dry myself well with the towel and lift my hair with a clamp. I look for my clothes to be able to put them on. I quickly ditch my bathing suit and put on my underwear but the ringing of my cell phone interrupts my task.
—Hello?— I answer hastily.
—Hey, Liv. Where are you?— I listen to Kyle's voice on the other end of the line.
—Oh, hello Kyle, ahm...— I stop walking from one side to the other and I calm down to be able to explain to him the reason for my absence. —Long Island.—
—You forgot about out breakfast right?— He says with a somewhat mocking tone. i can picture him smiling and and rolling his eyes perfectly.
—Yes, I'm sorry!— I cry. —I took a couple of days off and decided to come to the beach, and forgot to cancel. I swear I won't do it again.—
—Okey. You own me now.— He says still laughing. —Hey, use a sunscreen that is dermatology endorsed.— And the doctor always looming.
—Yes, I own you and yes. I got one from the pharmacy.—
—Did you got there on bus? Do you want me to pick you up at the station when you return?—
—Actually, I brought my car.— As always, he is always offering his help to me, but this time I don't refuse because I don't want to but because I really don't need it.
—oh ... well.— His voice reflecting some kind of disappointment. —Drive safe please.—
—Yes. Always. I'll call you as soon as I get back.— I tell him feeling really sorry. —I'll take you to breakfast right away.—
—Good. I'll be waiting. Have fun.—
—Thanks. Bye.— I say goodbye and hang up the phone. A big sight scapes my mouth as I think of Kyle. I can't believe I stood him up again. Not even a message. I feel so guilty. And, now that i think about it, I kind of miss him. But i rather not get that thought run around much. I look at the time on the screen. 9:47. Time passed faster than I realized while floating on the water. I turn to find the rest of my clothes and face a long mirror leaning against the wall.
I look at myself, my wet hair is combed completely back allowing me to see my skin that now has more color, tanned from exposure to the sun. I can see the marks of the swimsuit on my shoulders and chest. I look down and find my belly, my hand rests on it almost involuntarily and I feel its hardness under the soft skin. It is a sensation to which I am beginning to get addicted. I turn my body to see it from the side and I lean into various positions to see if the way the light falls into my skin makes it disappear, but it doesn't change anything. There is really that little lump under my fingertips, screaming at me that all this is true.
—Liv?— The knock in the door takes me out of my trance. —Can I come in?— And it starts to open slightly.
