Clarie, Cathie and Nannie: Chapter Three
"You can adopt her, sir, if no one came looking for her for the next two weeks." the man from the other line said as George nodded.
"Thank you, Mr. Davis. I'll call you after two weeks."
He hung the phone and looked at the little girl om the doorway.
"Thank you very much for letting me stay, . I'm feeling a bit better after the doctor gave me those medicines." she said as she sat on the couch. She's wearing the dress he gave her and smiled in satisfactory that it fits her well.
He sat at the opposite couch as he said, "No need to thank me, Clarisse. Now I have to ask you, can't you really remember anything?"
"I've dreamt when I slept. I saw faces but they're blurry. Then someone shouted 'Barbara' or something… then I woke up." Clarisse said as she took the cup of tea on her hands, "I think I felt water but when I look around, there's none."
George nod as he just stare at her drink from the cup. As if she's used to drinking tea from such a cup.
"Doctor Wells told me that you bumped your head onto the wood and that may have caused your temporary memory loss and that you're lucky the wood carried you away because you may have drowned because the ring around you leaked water. So, Clarisse, if you remember anything, don't hesitate to tell me. We'll wait for two weeks in case somebody look around for you. If no one did, I'm thinking of adopting you and bringing you to Genovia with me." George said as he watched Clarisse listen intently.
"Was that alright with you?" he asked as Clarisse just nodded, looking down to her cup of tea.
Genovia… she thought as she blinked, Why does that sounds familiar to me..
"What do you mean you're not letting anyone in?" Paul asked as he and his wife tried to speak again.
"Look sir.. You have no business here. We have a lot of emergencies happening right now and if you don't stop trying to bluff and waste my time, then I'm afraid some people will die-"
"And also, look.. ma'am. We found a floating girl near the hospital and we thought that she may be a passenger from the ship-"
The woman snapped at Paul as she sneered, "All of the passengers from the sunken ship are here, already. Now please, leave before I call the security."
Paul and Sophie exchanged looks as they left.
"They won't let us enter. And everybody's found already. So where on earth did Catherine came from?" Paul asked as he drove them back to the hospital.
Sophie sighed as she massaged her abdomen, "I think the question is- What's going to happen to Catherine. We can't just leave her.."
Paul sighed as he looked at he pulled the car to the parking and looked at his wife, "If no one came looking for her for the next twenty-four hours."
Sophie sighed as they left the car and made their way to the hospital.
"We'll take her?" she asked as they reached the stairs.
Paul just nodded as they entered the room. Both are surprised to see Catherine standing near the window.
"You are suppose to be in bed, young lady." Sophie said as Catherine jumped a little.
Catherine breathed in relief as she looked at the two adults hopefully while going back to her bed.
Paul closed the door as he sighed, "Catherine, we tried to enter to the port but a woman stopped us. She said that all of the passengers are already found. And she won't let us in."
The two observed the girl as Catherine looked down to her lap. She blink back tears as her hands went to her neck, feeling her necklace gone, she finally let out a sob as felt so lost.
Sophie and Paul tried their best to comfort her as Catherine just continued sobbing.
What if they're dead? Clarie… Nan… mama and papa… Does that mean that I'm alone now? What do I do? she thought as she kept on crying.
"Wha' do you mean 'you don't know'?" Melanie asked as everyone looked at Nanette, "You've been floatin' and shoutin' for help bu' you don't know why you're there?"
Nanette shrugged as she sipped another hot choco, "I was on a boat with my family because we're going to see Phillippe for Christmas, he's my brother. Then me and my sisters are excited, especially Clarie, so mama and papa told us to sleep early and I did. When I woke up, I'm floatin' and I heard that when you're in trouble, you have to shout for help so I did.. Then the water brought me near the, what is it again- spure?"
"Shore." Mary corrected as Nanette nodded and smiled, "Right- shore- thank you. Then I guess I sleep again because it's exhausting and I felt dizzy. Now when I woke up- I thought it was a dream but it's not because here I am.."
"She's talkative ain't she?" one of the boys said as Nanette glared at him.
"Excuse me , but who are they?" the little girl asked.
"I'm Robert." the same boy said as he pointed at the other boy, "He's my Hispanic friend, Joseph."
"Well- it's a pleasure to meet you- Joseph. You too… Robert." Nanette said as she sneered the later's name.
"Hey that's rude.. You're talking to me -eh.." Robert said as Nanette huffed.
"My other sister, Cathie, told Clarie that calling someone talkative is very rude." Nanette said as Robert stick his tongue out.
"Hey there, now stop being rude, rude, rude, Robert. Here Nanette, or can I call you Nancy or-"
"Nannie will be fine, ." the five year old said as she sent a smirk to Robert whose hands were slapped for trying to get another cookie out of the plate.
"Okay then, Nannie. Here help yourself with some cookies. I'll try to see if someone's around looking for a blonde five year-old girl." Mary said as she tightened her coat and got out of the house.
Nanette nodded as she ate her cookie. Why am I out of the water? Did mama throw me out? She told me she would throw me if I don't behave… Did I pushed Cathie out of the bed again? Is that why mama threw me out? Do they not love me?
