Clarie, Cathie and Nannie: Chapter Eight
"Why can't we have cockroaches as pets, nanny?" asked Harry as his older sister, Camilla, turned to him.
"Because they're gross, idiot."
"No they're not!"
"Yes they are?"
The two children throw insults and spat in each other as Nannie tried to hush the baby, tried to but failed.
"Now now now.. cockroaches are not, not, not suppose to be pets, 'arry. Because they always wanted to go around. And Camilla, they are not gross unless they don't wash their feet just like you two. Now, go, go, go to the bathroom and clean your feet, and leave those muddy shoes on water." She said, satisfied that the two stopped bickering, "'urry up! Your father will be 'ere in any minute!"
Harry and Camilla rushed to the bathroom as Nannie used the opportunity to clean the nursery, feed and enjoy the silence all the the same time.
Ever since she get the job, she's been nothing but restless. No wonder, Mr. Davis- William, as how he insisted on telling her, got a difficult time finding a nanny. These kids are energetic.
"NANNY! HARRY SPLASHED WATER ON ME!" Camilla screamed from the bathroom as Harry run back on the nursery, soaking wet.
"My sainted Aunt Fanny- what did I tell you about splashin' water on your sister, 'arry?" she asked as she placed baby Jean on the crib, thankful that the child is an angel and sleeps like log.
"She started it, nanny. She put my feet on bucket and turned on the shower." Harry defended as his sister walk inside the nursery, looking like someone caught in the middle of a hard rain.
Camille shook her head, "He did it, nanny. I just took off my shoes and cleaned my face."
"Well don't you like it? I helped you take away the soap."
"THEY ALMOST HIT MY EYES-"
"Okay now, children. Why don't you go back to the bathroom, take off your clothes and have a bubble bath? Wait for me there- I'll just take your towels and your clothes." Nannie said as she looked at the two who have smiled on their face.
The two nodded as they went back to the bathroom, with peace on each other again.
Nannie knows that peace will be short-lived if she didn't show up for the next three minutes so she checked on Jean and hurried to the bathroom after taking the towels and clothes.
For the next thirty minutes, she listen to the two as they talk about random things. Stopping potential fights occasionally as she rub shampoo on their hair and cleanse their muddy bodies.
She take note of the muddy clothes that should be taken care of and the muddy shoes that are equally muddy- if not muddier.
The next twenty minutes after the bath was spent drying the children's hair, telling them to be quiet because their baby sibling is sleeping and putting their clothes on while mopping the wet nursery floor.
The front door was heard opened and closed, and to Nannie's relief, the two kids race downstairs to greet their father.
On what follows surprises Nannie as the kids came running back to her with a bunch of sweets.
"Look Nanny! I got caramel on my chocolate!" Camilla smiled as Harry showed her his, "Mine got almonds."
"Oh my knickers- you two just finished your sweets from Halloween, who gave you these?"
"Daddy's friend-"
"Girlfriend-" Camilla corrected as Nannie caught a glimpse of her employer and a woman at the door.
She stood up as she smiled at the two.
"I can see that the children are already bugging you again, Nannie. Here- may I introduce, Marina.. my girlfriend. Marina, this is Nannie. A friend of a friend of mine who managed to survive my children's war hormones." William joked as Nannie and Marina exchanged "How do you do?" while shaking hands.
"Awe.. they are not that bad, Mr. Davis.. they're just being kids." Nannie shrugged as she hurriedly attended to a whimpering Jane.
"Ah- and that's my almost one year old baby Jane." William said as he motioned Nannie to hand the baby over.
Nannie obediently do so as she went to the two children who are planning to eat their chocolates already.
"But Nanny-"
"No buts. You're father would scold me if you two got your teeth rotten. And you haven't eaten dinner yet so save those chocolates for later. Now why don't you go ahead and follow your father with Ms. Marina while I clean over the nursery."
The two children, with frowns on their faces, handed over the bags of chocolate and left the room to find their father and his beau.
Nannie let out a sigh of relief as she folded the blankets and clean the nursery. Slightly worrying her position if her employer is to marry.
"Wait so you'll let me go to University?" Clarisse asked as she turn her head from her soon to be mother in law to to her fiancé.
"It's part of the work of a queen to support her husband. You see, after you marry Rupert, you have to be educated how politics works and if you need to, we can send you to the University of Pyrus to study diplomacy and Political Science." Queen Marlena said as Rupert gave a wink of encouragement to her.
Clarisse looked at her tea and smiled, "I would be delighted to attend, your majesty."
"Splendid. But that means we should have the wedding soon."
Rupert and Clarisse made eye contact as Rupert said, "We don't mind at all, maman."
Clarisse only nodded as the queen stood, "Good. I'll tell your father then."
She left the two on the room as Rupert looked at Clarisse, observing her closely.
"You told them about my dream on finishing college?"
Rupert shook his head, "But I do persuade them on letting you study. I know it's not your ideal course but at least you'll have some freedom before they ask for heirs."
Clarisse smiled at him as she took a sip on her tea, "Thank you."
Rupert brushed it off as he poured himself some tea, "Don't thanked me. I should be thanking you. Giving up your dreams to marry an aging prince."
"You're not aging. And I do it because I have to. I agreed to this so there's no backing away now."
"You're very brave, you know that Clarisse?"
Clarisse frowned at his words as she looked down to her tea and hand one hand to stroke the pendant around her neck.
"I used to hear that compliment somewhere but I can't remember it clearly." she sighed as she looked at him and smiled, "But thank you for that observation. I felt so terribly flattered."
"Well you shouldn't be. Having a backbone is one thing I always admire on someone," he said as Clarisse blushed.
"That is just simply how I was raised," she mumbled, not knowing where her voice came from.
"Well I have to thank Lord Grimaldo for raising such a strong and lovely lady." Rupert smiled as he saw another set of blush creep on his fiancé's face.
"I would hardly call myself lovely, Rupert." Clarisse whispered as she finished her tea, "And I guess you inherited the royal legacy of being a charmer."
"I would only charm you, Clarisse. If we want to make this work. I'm glad you're not making this harder than I thought you would." Rupert said as Clarisse smiled.
"I'm just simply observing your qualities.." she mumbled.
The two talked and talked as hours passed, exchanging words and discussing personal topics as Rupert came up with another topic.
"I wish I have a sibling."
Clarisse frowned as she felt uneasiness on her abdomen. She have no idea why but she started feeling dizzy as she felt herself having another vision.
And before she know it.
Rupert's beside her calling her name as her head hit the couch, the once cup on her hand hitting the floor, shattering into many pieces.
