CHAPTER 88 KYLE

KYLE'S POV:

I quickly stop the car in front of the hospital entrance and rush down. The guard on duty approaches me with doubt. I don't wait for him to recognize me, I just walk towards him and throw him the keys.

—Please park it, Raul.— He catches the keys with agility and he mumbles an affirmation mixed with my name and something else but I don't have the time to stop and chat. I walk as fast as I can inside the hospital and I slide through the familiar corridors until I reach the maternity ward.

—Kyle!— I see Adriana in front of me with a huge smile on her face.

—Where is she?— The question leaves my mouth skipping any kind of greeting.

—Calm down.— She takes my shoulder with a calm expression.

—Is he born?—

—Not yet. She's been in labor for hours.— I let out a sigh of relief, at least I have arrived in time to be here. —In fact I think we will have to do c-section— She affirms. I do not like the idea of putting Liv in an operating room and overmedicate her. As far as I'd known she was heading to a natural birth. But of course things could have changed in the past weeks.

—How long has she been here?— Adriana turns to see the clock on her wrist and tries to do the math.

—Her water broke yesterday morning and she has been here all afternoon until tonight.—

—How much longer can we wait?— I ask respecting the fact that she is her doctor right now.

—I'm not sure. I was about to enter and check on her. The nurses have been taking care of her.—

—Can I come in?— I ask without much encouragement. I don't know if Liv wants to see me and I sincerely doubt it. But I don't want to leave her alone.

—Nurse?— Another woman's voice makes us turn around and I recognize the lawyer coming out of the room, the alert tone in her voice is not very pleasing to me.

—What's wrong?— Adriana answers walking towards her.

—She is having another contraction.— The blonde woman says with some kind of panic in her eyes.

—I'm coming.— Adriana tells her before turning her eyes me. —Are you coming?— I stay silent and she just smiles and disappears behind the door.

I lean on the wall trying to make my decision. I don't know how she will react and I don't even think she wants to see me right now. I look at the small calendar the nurses have on the reception and I try to remember the exact date I left. I feel really guilty realizing I have left her alone for just over a month.

—Tell that to the baby!— I hear a scream from inside the room and I recognize her voice immediately.

—I need nurses here!— Adriana asks alertly, and a couple of nurses react immediately by entering the room. Fear invades me and I decide to go in and help. I put down the calendar and take a deep breath before entering.

—Do you need help around here?— I ask trying to sound calm as I watch her lying on the bed. She lifts her head and fixes her gaze on me letting a twisted smile appear.

—Kyle, the baby doesn't want to wait any longer.—I turn to see Adriana and I approach to help her.

—Oh, he doesn't?— Her body is not quite ready and yet the baby needs to come out now. I hate to know that she is in this situation. We don't really have many options. —Hi Liv.— I greet her smiling at her to keep her calm.

—Hello.— She manages to whisper back.

—Liv, can you wait a little longer?— I ask her looking into her eyes waiting for her to answer me, but she winces in pain and tries to contain it but a groan comes from her throat

—Uuuhhmmmm I don't think so.— She accepts trying to breathe with difficulty.

—Okay.— I watch Adriana to let her know she should proceed. —I want you to breathe calmly.— I ask Liv trying to keep my own voice calmed.

—Let's get you settled.— One of the nurses approaches and helps me to sit her in position, Liv complains a bit but does not grumble.

—Put your hands behind your knees.— I try to explain placing her arms in the appropriate place —When you push you will pull them towards you okay?— I know this will work.

—Please.— She begs with evident pain in her expression. I try to show her how to breath while I looking at Adriana to know of she is ready. —Another one is coming.— She announces making Adriana get in action and giving her the instructions as I am in charge on helping Liv. She start pushing hard by clenching her jaw. I grab her leg and bring it up so she doesn't forget to pull it. The expression of pain on her face increases as the nurse slowly counts the seconds.

—1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10, let go.— She lets out a loud scream and breathe desperately. I can swear I can listen to her pounding heart. I turn to see Adriana looking for some good news but she just shakes her head somewhat frustrated

—What is it?!— Olivia complains with a stressful tone.

—Nothing honey, you're doing an excellent job.— I approach to kiss her forehead trying to cheer her up. They ask the lawyer to leave who immediately leaves the room.

—Olivia, I need you to do it with more strength, nothing is happening.— I do not like that Adriana tells her this, she is trying so hard. But I know she is right.

—You can do it.— I encourage her trying to keep my smile for her. —Ready?—

—Yes.— She takes a deep breath and begins to push again. I can see her forehead sweat and she lets out a loud groan, stopping exhausted. —Ahhh!—

—Olivia, don't stop.— Adriana complains.

—I can't do it.— Liv cries as her body starts to fall backwards.

—You can do it, Livie.— I try to encourage her again forcing her body to stay sit. I know that she is strong and that she can do it, and if she can't I'll make sure we can help her. Everything will be fine.'

—Again Olivia. This time twenty seconds, please try.— I want to make Adriana stop her attitude but deep inside I know she is just trying to held and do her job.

—I'm trying!— I can see Olivia herself wants to stop her.

—Yes you are. You can do this.— I keep encouraging her.

—Now, push!— Adriana commands and Olivia screams in pain but does it without giving up this time. Adriana watches me and nods, the little one is finally coming.

—Very good. I see the head Liv don't stop.— Adriana keeps encouraging and the nurse keeps her count as Olivia keeps pushing.

—That's it Liv, Very good!— The warm in my heart surrounds my whole mind as I understand the magnificent moment she is living. The little miracle of my Olivia comes to the world after so much waiting. She is about to meet her little man.

—I need help here.— The nurses run to help Adriana and I wonder if I should help her too. But I son's want to leave her side. She flops down on the bed exhausted, her breathing ragged.

—Ah.— She complains. I keep my hand on hers.

—I'm sorry Olivia, we have to help the little one.— Adriana says. —One more push Liv.—

—I can't... I can't breathe.— Her voice comes out scratchy so I hurry to sit her back down.

—Inhales please.— She is weak, the nurses move again and I just wait for her to recover a little. —Bring an oxygen please.— I ask one of the nurses hopping we really wont be needing it.

—He is almost out Liv. Can you push one more time?— Adriana asks actually doubting she will be able to do it. I know she is already thinking on alternatives.

—I don't...— She whispers giving up. —Elliot.— She calls him, in a quiet sigh that breaks my soul. She opens her eyes and a strange glow appears, she puts herself in position and begins to push again releasing a cry of pain that freezes the blood in my veins. The heartbreaking sound was followed by the baby's cries. I watch the baby move in Adriana's hands and I understand that we are done ... it is all over.

—Here you are little man.— I speak to the little one as I used to do it through her belly. I lean to help Adriana with the umbilical cord and take the baby in my arms. —Here is your little man, Liv.— I walk back to her side and take my eyes to her body as it loses strength. —Liv. Olivia! Olivia!— Her limbs fall limp on the bed and her eyes slowly close.
