Rumbles and shrieks sounded as the rock above them shook about. The couple looked nervously above them and hurried even faster. The massive weight if the mountain above them seemed to press them lower with its immensity.
The former onix tunnel seemed to stretch further and further in front of them as some titanic battle swelled to a crescendo on top of the mountain. A mighty crack sounded and rocks fell to the floor. The man fell to a stop as the rock fall swallowed the woman and his lower body. He clutched the child in his arms desperately as feeling seemed to swim away.
A boulder popped out from a tunnel opening close to the man and eyes flicked open a peered at the dying man.
"Please, take him please." Cried out the man to the curious onix. One hand let go of the child and fumbled through his pack. The weak grip closed around a small metal cyclinder that made
the onix eyes narrow in interest.
"You can have this, just look after him. Please. Please." The voice weakened and trailed off. A nod came from the stone behemoth and delicately scooped up the child and the metal coat with an unhinged maw.
"Thankyou." Came the slurred whisper. The partially obscured body coughed once more and went still.
Its jaw still open the rock snake nodded once and the body and slithered down the tunneling came from. A few hours later and many miles away the onix reached a large cavern gently pushed out the sleeping child onto a thick patch of moss. It then slithered over to a large pile of assorted ore.
It looked it over and swallowed it all alongside the metal coat moved back to the child and coiled itself back around it as the light of
evolution started glowing l, bathing the cavern in bright light. It flashed and the rock snake had disappeared it place taken by a metal titan. It blinked one great eye open and looked upon the responsibility it had taken upon itself and gave a quiet rumble.
Worry quickly took the place of curiosity, it had no idea how to look after a human child. What did they eat, why did they stink, did they dig or clamber about like a graveler? The newly evolved steelix didn't know what to do until a thought came to it the child looked like a very weak machop. The steelix slithered out of the cool stone and earth to find the local fighting types, to see what they ate and if the human then could too.
