Endeavor was glancing sideways at his wife as she moved gracefully and freely around the kitchen. Even with her swollen belly every movement went with reliance, he wondered what she would think of him at that moment in his life. For an instant he was lost in the figure of his wife, in her loose hair rocking from side to side as she moved preparing the food.
His wife pulled him out of his thoughts.
"I hope you like it" Rei said, putting a large plate of cold soba in front of Enji. "I really like it lately"
He watched her smile cheerfully and wondered if that was why in the future his two-haired boy would like that dish so much. The woman poured green tea into two glass and placed some dishes with tsukemono.
"It looks good, thanks" he answered, taking his chopsticks.
Rei watched him awkwardly maneuver with his good arm to take the soba and sauce at his side.
"If you need help I can help..."
"It is not necessary," he interrupted, "thank y…"
He was about to finish the sentence when he spilled the glass of green tea on the table and they both got up immediately.
"Damn it, I'm sorry" he said clumsily taking the glass.
"I clean it up" Rei yelled, reaching for a rag. "Don't worry, it must be hard to use just one arm"
After cleaning up the spilled tea, they sat down again and ate, she helped Enji even though he had refused. With a slightly flushed face, he agreed to open his mouth for her to feed him.
This wife in front of him made feel him guilty and unhappy as it was something he dedicated to destroy.
She had always been very kind and attentive, as well as cheerful and determined. Rei had been strong, as much as she could.
In the end Enji also helped her with the dishes although she had told him that it was not necessary and that it would be better to he rest for a while.
"What will you do now?", Enji asked almost like a whisper, watching her put the last plate on a shelf.
His wife smiled and thought that this day he was very different, maybe the concrete had moved his ideas.
"It's strange to have you home so early," the woman said laughing, "I like to take care of the garden, but today I want to rest my back." She put her hands on her waist and sighed.
"You feel bad?"
"Not at all, I'm just tired, let's watch tv in the living room"
Enji nodded and followed her without question. They both sat in front of the television and Rei leaned her head against her husband, he looked sideways at her, he wasn't even paying attention to the movie, he was lost in the sensation of the woman's body against his. It had been a long time since he had felt that warm feeling. The old memories of marriage came to his mind like fireworks and without thinking, more like a reflex act he leaned down a little and kissed Rei's head. She looked up slightly confused. Enji's blue eyes met hers, there was melancholy and pain in them. The woman reached out a hand and tenderly placed it on his face. She placed her other hand on Enji's chest and kissed him lightly on the lips. It made him feel the chains that tightened his heart loosen a little. No one said anything else, they continued watching television until they heard their noisy younger son running towards there.
Natsuo used to be a laughing and talkative boy. He always had a lot of energy, and he was jumping and running from one side to the other. It was his first year in kindergarten and he was already more than adapted. He loved to play and talk to other children. He made good use of the time he spent there learning and making friends.
Every day he returned home two hours before his older brothers, was picked up by the family chauffeur who brought him home safe and sound, where he spent time with his mother playing or helping in the garden. Until his brothers returned and could play longer, however he hated when his father was home and had his older brother Touya trained to exhaustion. He thought that his brother was already the best without the need to hurt himself training.
"I came back mom..."
Natsuo shouted, stopping short, looking at his father. The youngest of the Todoroki wondered why he was there so early.
"Hi my love" said the mother while Enji stood up to sit in the other armchair.
"How was your day?" the mother asked with a sweet voice.
"We played in the yard and made hand paints, and we ate curry at lunch," Natsuo replied effusively.
"How good. It looks like it was a lot of fun"
"Yes, it was" said the minor, smiling.
Enji looked at her little son who was happy and spoked with a lot of energy and confidence with his mother. If he remembered the Natsuo he had last seen, angry and distant, his skin bristled. His son looked at him curiously in the face.
"What happened to your arm?" Natsuo asked.
"I had a little accident at work"
"Did you save someone?" Natsuo asked again, jumping out of his mother's arms.
"Yes a kid". He watched his son approach cautiously.
Natsuo's eyes flashed with approval. Enji did not remember that his son had looked at him like this before.
"Great" the kid yelled.
"You can also be a hero, son"
"Enji" Rei said, looking disapprovingly at him.
He knew what she thought of that. Many times she had yelled at him that it was crazy to go after that goal using their children. Natsuo turned his face to see his mother, and could see her annoyance. He did not like that they will fight and shout at each other.
"No, I don't want to..." he murmured, sitting next to his mother.
"Let's change your clothes Natsu"
Rei took him by the hand and took the little boy with her. Enji exhaled annoyed with himself. And he decided to go to his study, there he spent a long time reading. Until he fell asleep on his desk. He was awakened by the voices of his children who ran down the hall. He got up sleepily and looked at the clock on the wall, it was late. He poked his head into the hallway and listened to the children's voices and decided to go see what they were doing. He found them playing ball in the yard and stared at them from a distance. They looked happy, he thought.
His wife appeared behind him with a glass of water and a pill.
"Here, it's time for your medicine, otherwise your arm will start to hurt"
"Thanks" he said, putting the pill in his mouth, took a drink of water, and returned the glass.
"Kids, come have lemonade in the kitchen"
Rei yelled at her children. The children looked at their parents and started walking towards the house.
"Hey dad" Fuyumi said, "I'm sorry about your arm"
He nodded, smiling as they walked to the kitchen. They all sat at the breakfast table to drink lemonade and eat snacks. The kids chatted animatedly with their mother. Enji looked at them as if he were the spectator of a movie, unable to mix in the situation. However, he could feel Touya's discomfort, he didn't get into the conversation much and was absent. Occasionally he would glare at his father with annoyance while sipping lemonade or eating one of his mother's delicious snacks.
"I really want us to go" Fuyumi said.
"Her father will be home for a few days resting, maybe we could go", Rei took Enji's hand out of his thoughts, "right?" she asked looking at him.
"Ah, yes, yes", he answered, not knowing that he had accepted.
"It's great, I'm very happy," Fuyumi shouted.
"I'm excited too," Natsuo said waving his arms.
Enji looked at Touya who was very quiet.
"What do you think?", he asked, addressing his eldest son.
The little boy was startled and raised his face to look at his father. Natsuo looked at him curiously. Rei patted her son on the back and encouraged him to speak.
"I also want to go... I like games..." Touya's thin voice answered.
Enji nodded with a smile on his face. Fuyumi wanted them to go to an amusement theme park. Her friends from school had gone and she was excited to be able to share that experience with her family. The girl had some days wanting to share her idea with her family but they could rarely all talk together, she regretted that her father had been injured at work but she liked having him around, despite the fact that he was very strict, not very expressive and sometimes disturbing. She loved her parents and siblings very much.
"Won't it be a bother with your arm like that, dad?" asked the girl worriedly.
"He is a hero, he can do it" Natsuo replied smiling, causing Fuyumi and Rei to laugh.
Touya watched them silently, made a quick hissing sound with his teeth, which faded into thin air, and stood up.
"At least that way we won't have to train" the boy said annoyed.
"Touya ..." Rei looked understandingly at her son.
"I'll go do my homework," he said bluntly, starting to walk. Enji watched with regret as his son walked away.
"I will talk with him"
The woman was about to stand up when her husband stopped her by getting up first.
"I will, don't worry"
She hesitated a moment knowing that Enji used to be very hard on Touya and that their son could be almost as stubborn as his father. Even so, she remained in the chair, while her other two children watched them in silence.
Enji knocked on the door of Touya's room. But he did not receive a response. So he struck again with more insistence.
"Touya, I want us to talk…"
"I don't want, get out of here," the boy shouted from inside.
In another time he would have kicked down the door and confronted the blue eyed little boy, like his. But hero # 2 knew it wasn't worth starting an argument with his son. He well knew that he would not gain anything good, time had already taught him that the best way to resolve these situations was with time and space. So he stuck his forehead against the warm wood of the door and let the air escape from his lungs through his mouth, trying to calm his impulses that were as burning as his flames.
"We'll stop training for a while" he said, waiting for an answer that didn't come.
Touya in the other side was surprised at that statement. Although he didn't want to answer, he put on his headphones and lay down on bed looking at the ceiling. His father turned and started walking down the long hallway. At the end of this he met Natsuo looking at him suspiciously.
"Did you fight with my brother Touya?" he asked concerned.
"No, he didn't open the door" he replied, coming closer, but Natsuo took a step back.
"It's because you are spooky sometimes ..." he yelled at him, his fists clenched at his sides.
Enji smiled, admired the courage his little boy showed when defending his brother, many times he fought with him in his adolescent version, many times he also tried to get closer and could not. But now, he could, it was easier.
He leaned towards his son and placed a hand gently on his head. Natsuo's eyes looked at him with a mixture of confusion and tenderness.
"You are a very good boy Natsu, keep taking care of your brothers in the future..."
The little boy had tears in his eyes, he did not know how to respond to such circumstances. He used to receive no sign of affection or approval from his father and a part of him believed that he did not love him because he was weak. But now he thought it might not be so.
Enji lifted him off the ground and carried him with the help of his good arm. Natsuo had never been so high and it seemed to him that this was how it should be seen from the roof of his house. Smiling he clean at some of the tears that threatened to leap from his eyes.
"Let's go see what your mother and sister do" Enji said while walk. Natsuo just nodded.
