Story in a nutshell: Elena and Mateo with some hot coco and reminiscing.

Authors Note: New story this time! Hope you enjoy and please leave me a review.

Mateo yawned as he sat up on the window seat in the library. He had his feet stretched out in front of him, a book in his lap, and a lantern next to him as he was reading how to properly change one object to another. That sounded like it would have been the coolest thing as he thought about taking notes, before deciding against it. That would have been too much like being in high school again. Besides he never took notes before, he thought, with a shrug.

There was a groan at the door as Mateo paused, was that a guard or Esteban? He would occasionally come to the library to read late at night as the two might talk when he stayed over. Watching the door Mateo saw the swirl of Elena's pink dressing gown.

"I saw the light," she said as she stepped into the room with a tray. "Mateo? I thought you were Esteban, he likes to come in here late at night just to read. Or Isabel, or Gabe trying to keep up with his lessons..." She giggled as Mateo joined in, it was no secret that he loved his sleep and would often be the last to wake up during an attack.

"Nah, I couldn't sleep so I came in here," he said as he gestured to the open portrait that lead down to his wizards work shop. Gabe, Isabel, or Esteban long and fast asleep in their beds.

"Oh," she said after a minute as she came over to him and put her tray on the nearby table. He looked very comfortable as she noticed the pillow behind him. "Want some hot chocolate?"

"Of course," he said as Elena sat down next to him. They each picked up a steaming mug. They each looked out at the night sky as it was quiet between them. Elena only sighed as she looked at his book, that looked kind of familiar, she thought as Mateo shut it. Alacazar, it read on the inside cover, as Mateo put it aside. Elena only looked down at her mug as she took a drink.

She put the cup on her lap as she smiled. "You know I remember when your abuelo did a spell out of that book. I was ten and he turned my vegetables into chocolate when I refused to eat them. It still tasted like vegetables, but it looked more appetizing," she said with a giggled as Mateo cracked a smile as he laughed too. "I couldn't eat chocolate for a week but it made that day so much better."

"Do you have any other stories about my abuelo? I mean he was probably young when he was your royal sorcerer."

Elena told him a few other stories that she could remember at the top of her head. After all, sometimes to get away from lessons she'd hide in his wizards area to help him. Then her dad would make her go to lessons. Mateo just smiled trying to picture a young Elena. "You and your grandfather, I bet you guys were really close."

"I wish I had those kinds of memories of my abuelo, but I'm glad I have my own that I do know that keeps his memory alive. My abuelo and I had this deep almost mystical bond between us," said Mateo as he took a drink out of his cup. Elena giggled as she liked the way that he had phrased that as she pushed some hair behind her ear.

"Your abuelo was wonderful and I love how he helped shape you to who you are today," said Elena as she took a drink of her own hot coco. It was still nice and hot as she used it to keep her hands warm.

"Well, he had help," said Mateo as he smiled at Elena and took her hand. "You helped me too. I wouldn't be where I am because of you. If it wasn't for Sofia and her amulet finding me, well, we wouldn't be sitting here right now."

"I had a feeling that you would point out none of us would be sitting here," she said laughing some. "But I'm glad that you're a part of my life and I'm a part of yours."

Mateo only flushed as he was happy to hear that as he took a long drink of his hot chocolate. Elena was glancing out at the stars as Mateo's brown eyes lingered on his book. He would have loved another story but let that thought go right now. He was sitting here with his best friend, might as well make the night out of it.

"Well if it wasn't for you I might not have practiced magic or had the confidence to do what I can now. We took out Shuriki together and your test and everything. You helped me begin my journey to be a better wizard. Elena, you're always going to be a part of my life, and I'm happy right where we are." He never knew a friendship quite this strong as he took another drink of his hot chocolate. By now he had finished as he put the ceramic mug to the side.

Elena only beamed proudly as she put her hand on top of his. "Somehow, I knew you would change my life, and I knew you would when I first saw you. Your friendship is something is the most important and valuable to me. I wouldn't want that to change Mateo. You're more than my royal wizard Mateo, you're one of my best friends."

"You're more than just the queen of Avalor to me Elena, you're one of my best friends. That means the world to me," he said as they watched the stars from out the window. Mateo knew that he wouldn't change a thing about his life. He squeezed her hand as he made a wish on a shooting star. I wish nothing would change, he thought, as he smiled at Elena.
