Story in a nutshell: Esteban spends time with his abuelos.
Authors Note: In honor of the finale, I'm skipping the next one on my list and instead writing something different. As part of my disney princesses as moms collection I'm going to write a separate story on the archive too (not sure when it'll be I'm in the middle of my other stories that I want to finish first). I don't know how many more Elena stories I'm going to write but I want to thank everyone who has been reading my stuff and I'm eternally grateful to all the reviewers I've had over the years. Since I knew Elena was ending in August I held off on publishing anything hoping the finale gave me ideas. It does and here we are. Also since we now know Estban's moms name it will be used here instead of Adelina.
Please enjoy and let me know what you think!
Francisco Flores had his guitar and was gently strumming a song coming to him. The early morning sunrise basking around the garden. Next him Esteban reading a law book as per usual. It was peaceful and not at all different from when they would be together before. This time they had all the time together with Elena queen on her own.
The quiet only to be broken by the sound of the staff getting ready for the day.
"Abuelo," said Esteban breaking the silence between them, mulling his next words. "Thank you for spending time with this morning."
Francisco sharply looked over at his grandson and furrowed his brow.
"Thank you? Esteban you never have to thank me for spending time you.," he said briskly as if nothing had happened.
Elena had just gotten crowed last week. That didn't stop him from having the memory of his abuelo standing up to him and what happened. Francisco had turned into a stone wall of all things! Esteban could only feel terrible about the events that transpired, especially with the 'four shades of awesome.' He was lucky that Elena decided to forgive him rather then ban him to soldedad island, even if it was part of her test.
"Abuelo," said Esteban trying again.
"Esteban, I have always been on your side," he said again simply strumming the guitar. "I understand what happened and now it's behind us. You did a good job with Avalor in the time we were gone atoning for your mistakes."
"You mean that?"
Esteban had said that in such a small voice that Francisco could barely hear him. He did and strummbed his guitar as if showing him that he meant it. Then leaned over to meet his eye directly.
"Of course, I do. You think I don't remember how small our harbor was before Shuriki took over? Or that you kept her from destroying the painting we were in?"
The younger of the two smiled thinly blinking back and remembering his times with Shuriki. He and Dona had accomplished a lot together while Shuriki was off and doing nothing. Things could have been much worse if Shuriki decided to team up with Cristobal. He probably wouldn't have felt bad or anything, even if he was the next in line after Isabel.
"Well…"
Esteban didn't really know what to say to that. Francisco had stuck by his word for the longest time. Then a loud squack came from behind them to see a bird chasing after its prey in the corner of the garden.
"Let's go get some breakfast," said Esteban. "I mean everyone would be up by now."
Francisco nodded and handed his guitar to the person that usually followed him holding it. The young girl waved and carried it along with his sword. Esteban still couldn't believe that they had this girl on payroll to do this job and that she didn't get turned into stone.
"Good idea, you know we should stop by Margarita and Santiago's stone today," said Francisco looking at Esteban and put a hand on his shoulder. "Its been awhile hasn't it?"
He nodded thinking that he had missed the last Dia De Los Muertos with his family. He had heard the story that Elena had met up with and old friend and went to the spirit world. He could just imagine what it would be like if it was him. He really wished that he could see his parents one more time.
With that the two men got up and went to the breakfast table. It odd to see Victor sitting there as if they were children again. Elena was busy telling everyone the important thing that she had to do that. Which at this point Esteban didn't care. He and Dona were okay with passing off the chancellor duties to Miss Turner.
Luisa had smiled at him and then declared that they were going off for the day. It had been awhile since they were off together. Just like old times before heading down to the Avalor City Cemetery. Francisco sharing his song that he had been practicing the last couple of days.
"Esteban," said Luisa looking at her grandson. She had that motherly smile on her face and a snack peaking out of her purse, despite just eating. She was happy to everyone together again. "Did you want to get some flowers first?"
"I will," he said helping her pick some in the garden before they were too far away from the castle. He let Luisa pick out some of the best in the garden. It was her pride and joy as Esteban carried them himself. This was the first time they were together since the Elena's coronation. It was going better then they thought.
"I'm glad to have this time you Esteban," said Luisa.
"Me too abuela," he said taking her hand.
With that they headed down toward the cemetery together, relieving as many memories as they could.
