Prompt: oops, I just did that last ama (Katniss' reaction to the kiss) and forgot to put that it's a prompt I'd love to see! If you aren't interested in prompting it I'd still love to hear your thoughts!
Where Katniss Sees The Light
Katniss didn't mean to pry.
She walked away after Effie hugged her because she was impatient to leave the Capitol behind. For good. She only stopped and looked back when she realized Haymitch wasn't following. She hadn't really expect his goodbyes to take long. A quick bye, sweetheart maybe. Haymitch and Effie weren't even friends after all.
She frowned when she saw how close they were standing together. She didn't hear what Haymitch said to her but suddenly Effie was offering her cheek and Haymitch pecked it which Katniss found… odd but they had worked together for a long time after all, maybe she was wrong and maybe they were friends. Except instead of leaving it at that, Haymitch leaned in again and kissed her right on the lips, Effie's hand came to rest on his chest.
It would probably have been painful to watch if she hadn't felt so numb inside since Prim's death.
As it was she felt nothing but a latent sort of curiosity.
When had that happened? Peeta would know, probably. Peeta was always better at that sort of things.
She started walking again, wanting to give them their privacy. It didn't take long for Haymitch to catch up with her. He kept his grey eyes straight ahead, his face was blank and she couldn't tell if that kiss had meant something or not.
"Are you…" she started.
"I'm not commenting on yours and the boy's love life." he cut her off with a snarl. "You don't get to comment on mine."
He was commenting more often than not but she recognized the warning for what it was and remained silent for a while. She told herself she was too numb to care but when the hovercraft appeared in the distance, she also told herself she had been selfish enough.
"Won't you miss her?" she asked.
"I'm used to missing her." he grumbled.
"You could stay." she offered with a shrug. "I can manage."
"No, you can't." he snorted as if it was the best joke.
It probably was.
She didn't insist.
Truth be told, she was glad Haymitch was coming with her.
