Authors note: Hey Kiebsmon, surprise! I'm your secret Santa! You asked for some Reds and Blossom supremacy, so I hope I delivered! Enjoy Brick slowly dying on the inside.
The Powerpuff girls do not belong to me and as always they have human appendages. The Reds are about 25 in this one.
*if this seems similar to my old story Vexation, the tone is loosely based off of it. But the girls and the boys have their powers in this one.
Provocation
Noun: An action that makes someone annoyed or angry, especially deliberately.
Blossom blinked, once, twice, scarcely believing who was standing in front of her desk.
The young assistant director stared in shock at the new hire who stared back at her – clearly just as surprised to see her as she was him, and judging from the look on his face, he was thinking the exact same thing as her:
What the hell was he/she doing here?
Finally, the tall red-head muttered a bitter, "fuck", under his breath, breaking the stunned silence that had enveloped the room. It was so quiet that a normal person wouldn't have heard it. Hell, if the pink Powerpuff Girl didn't have super hearing herself, she wouldn't have heard the swear.
"Language." She muttered, her response practically on auto-pilot from years of telling the man standing before her to mind his less this stellar vocabulary. Her office's secretary – an older woman in her late fifties – blinked in surprise. "Pardon me dear?"
Ah yes, her secretary was still in the room. The other woman had been so quiet that she had forgotten that the older lady was still in the room with them. Blossom had to keep reminding herself that regular humans couldn't hear what she could. In this case, it was probably for the best. The man in front of her had never been overly found of normal humans anyways.
Instead, she tore her eyes off of the man and smiled at the small woman who had brought in her unexpected visitor moments ago. "It's nothing Doris. Thank you for bringing him in. I'll take it from here."
"Do you need anything else Blossom?" it took everything in the pink Puff to keep a humorous grin off of her face, as she noticed the way that the older woman's eyes flicked between her and the supposed new hire. "No, I'll be fine. We're just going to have a little chat. Would you mind shutting the door behind you on your way out please?"
Her secretary – bless her – took the hint; and without so much as a second glance at the pair, turned and swiftly shut her office door behind her. Once the auburn haired woman couldn't hear any other footsteps heading her way, she turned her attention back on the remaining person in the room.
"Well. It's been a while, Brick."
She almost didn't recognize the Red Rowdy. His long red hair and trademark baseball cap were gone, and his hair went down just past his shoulders. The oversized hoodies, black jeans and skate shoes that she always remembered him sporting as a teen, were now replaced with a casual but smart office suit and brown slacks, complete with a red tie. He looked nothing like himself. If it hadn't been for his abnormal blood red eyes, she would have easily mistaken him for someone else.
He looked good. She admitted inwardly with a slight grimace. As much as Blossom didn't want to admit it: he cleaned up well as an adult, compared to the brooding teenager he had once been. Though, if she really stopped to think about it; the last time she had seen him had been when they were seventeen and seniors. Now they were twenty-five and working. For some reason, seeing him now made her feel older than it should. She brushed off the thought and redirected her attention to him.
"So, what are you doing here?"
"Isn't it obvious? I'm the new hire." Brick rolled his dark red eyes condescendingly, and inwardly, Blossom rolled her own. Clearly his attitude hadn't changed from the last time she saw him. The thought drew her up short.
Come to think of it, it had been a good couple of years since she has last laid eyes on him. After she and her sisters, and he and his brothers had graduated from high school; the boys had seemingly dropped off the face of the Earth. Blossom knew they were still around, but they didn't get up to too much trouble anymore. She had seen brief flashes of Brick around the city and had seen his trademark red streak cut through the night sky on more than one occasion, but she couldn't recall the last time she had actually seen him in person and had a conversation with him.
Although, that in itself might have been contributed to something else that she had heard concerning him when she had gone to the mayor's office a couple of weeks ago…
She narrowed her eyes at him. "Weren't you put on probation a few weeks ago?" Brick rolled his eyes again and crossed his arms over his chest. "If you're trying to be cute-"
"No, I'm serious, I thought I read something about you being on probation. I could be wrong but I don't think I am."
"Ah so you do care about what I get up to, I'm touched Pinky."
"Don't flatter yourself. Miss. Belum gives me updates about what you're doing in case you get any bright ideas about reverting back to your old ways. I don't necessarily ask for them." She eyed him again. "So, were you?"
"On probation?" Brick heaved a sigh. "If you must know, yeah, I was. You could say I just finished."
Blossom looked him up and down, trying to discern if he was pulling her leg, but if the annoyed man in front of her was lying, then he hid it well. "Okay," she finally muttered after a lengthy pause. "Then I gotta know: how did you manage to land a job here? I've been a part of the hiring process before, and they don't normally let anyone in with a record… no offence."
"I have my ways." Brick muttered, and the tone that he used let her know that the rest wasn't up for discussion. Truthfully, it didn't matter to her, if she wanted to find out how he got in, then she would with minimal effort. She had been promoted to assistant director after all, very few things got past her.
"Alright come with me then. I guess if you're the new hire I was told about, I'll show you the rest of the floor. Bring your stuff, I'll show you your office and you can set it down there." Blossom stood up from behind her desk and gestured for him to follow her as she led the way out of her office. She led him through the winding mess of cubicles on her floor, pointing out various spots like the kitchen and the washrooms, while Brick followed silently behind her. Inwardly, Blossom wondered if he was regretting his choice to come work here.
"So…" she began after a slight falter, sensing Brick's eyes boring holes into the back of her head. "…How are your brothers?"
"Good. Staying out of trouble for the most part, so they're doing better than I am, I guess."
"I was about to say I haven't heard anything about them for a while. What are they up to these days?"
"Boomer's off sightseeing. He's been in Europe for the past two months exploring the continent. Last time I talked to him he was somewhere in Germany. He's happy."
"and how's Butch?"
She felt Brick smirk before she saw it. "Butch works here, so you tell me."
That made her falter mid-stride, before quickly regaining her composure. Butch worked here? in her building? Why hadn't she known about that? How didn't she know that? She thought that someone might have found it prudent to tell her that an ex-supervillain, who gave her and her sisters absolute hell for the majority of their lives, was working in their company.
"…I had no idea." She finally admitted after a moment. "When did that happen?"
"About a year ago. It was kept under wraps. That and he works in a different department. He's probably sexually harassing all the decently attractive woman on his floor."
"Oh lovely." Blossom muttered, shooting him a withering look over her shoulder. "Yeah, well it was my lucky break. He got me the interview and here I am." Brick admitted sullenly as they turned into an empty office incased in frosted glass, just past the slew of cubicles.
Oh. So that's how he got the job here.
Blossom felt her brow furrow as she shut the door behind him. First, her old ex-nemeses showed up out of the blue with no warning, then she finds out that his brother works for her company without her knowledge, and now apparently said brother must have pulled some strings and landed him a job here. As much as she wanted to ignore it, it seemed a little too convenient for them. Just what where they planning…?
Bick noticed her shut the door behind them and raised a brow.
"What's up."
"Cut the bullshit Brick, why are you really here?"
Brick raised an eyebrow at her abnormally rough choice of words, and crossed his arms over his chest but didn't say anything right away. For some reason, his lack of response pissed her off more than she thought it would. "Come on Brick, why are you here?"
"Uh, to work?" Brick shrugged his shoulders sarcastically, causing her to groan in annoyance. Clearly, he wasn't going to make this easy for her. "I'm not dumb Brick, I know you're up to something. So, what is it?"
"Clearly you are, because for once I actually don't have any ulterior motives." Brick growled back, and she could see a muscle in his eyebrow twitch. "Butch saw there was a position open and recommended me for the job. Your bosses seemed to like me enough during my interview and I need money, so here I am."
"Really, because last I heard, you seemed to be quite content with petty crime and drifting around." Blossom coolly shot back as she brushed past him to sit on the desk in the middle of the room. "Besides you don't exactly strike me as the office job type… to be fair, neither does Butch, but I digress."
"Trust me, I'm not here because I want to be." Brick snapped back, but the pink eyed woman noticed that he seemed guarded.
"Then why are you really here?" she pressed. "I just want the truth. Is this some sort of elaborate scheme or heist you and Butch are planning?"
"Butch actually likes this job and it pays him really well, so no."
"Are you here to try and screw me over?" she pointed to herself with one perfectly manicured nail. She didn't think that was the reason, but her counterpart had always been unpredictable and she wouldn't put it past him to try, seeing how often he tried to sabotage her personal life when they were still in high school.
"Don't flatter yourself there, Pinky. Up until about twenty minutes ago, I didn't even know you worked here." Brick snorted. Blossom felt the urge to throw her hands up in the air. "Okay then, I don't know. If it isn't your choice to be here, and you don't want to be here, then why are you still standing here having this conversation with me? There has to be a reason."
"It's not that damn simple." Brick rubbed his temples with his hands, looking like he was barely fighting off the urge to hit something.
"It could be, but you're really not making it easy for yourself, you know that right Brick-"
"Goddamn it Blossom, I just need a signature. That's it." Brick finally snapped, eyes darting around frantically to see if anyone outside the enclosed office had overheard. When he was sure that no one beyond the glass wall was paying them any attention – he pulled a folded piece of paper out of his back pocket and handed it to her. She unfolded it and looked at it in confusion. "What's this?"
"It's my papers… to get me out of a parole violation." Brick forced out through gritted teeth as he held a hand to his forehead. "I made a deal with the courts that if I could hold down a job for six months and prove that I'm a 'productive member of society'; then they'll reduce time off my record and get rid of my violation; and right now, I really need that." He scowled at her. "This is the only job that's given me a call back and that's largely due to Butch's influence. I can't even begin to count how many job's I've applied to."
Blossom felt her confusion slowly start to lift. "So Butch getting you an interview here-"
"-Was so I could get started, yes." Brick clarified with a sigh. "I don't know who he had to go through to convince them that I could do the job, but it's damn near the nicest thing that he's ever done for me; so, I thought, maybe, just maybe… I could hold down a job here and prove to him that he made the right call." He looked more frustrated than Blossom could ever remember seeing him, as he ran a hand through his cropped red hair, ruffing it up so it resembled how it used to look back when they were in high school.
"I was actually kinda looking forward to today." He admitted, spitting the words out like they were venom. "All they told me was that I was going to meet my supervisor and she would get me started. I thought it would be easy enough to get on her god side, and then the rest of my time here would be in the bag. I'd get that damn signature no problem, and then I'd be on my way."
He locked eyes with her, intense cherry red boring into strawberry pink.
"-Then I saw you sitting behind that damn desk and I fucking knew I didn't stand a chance at getting that paper signed; so how about you do both of us a favor, and let me out the back door quietly. I won't say anything if you don't-"
"Just a minute."
If it was under normal circumstances, Blossom would have laughed at how quickly Brick shut himself up, but he was right: she was his superior and she had an air to dignity to maintain.
She almost paused at the thought. She was his superior.
Oh, that felt good to think, and even better for him to say.
Finally, she had some sort of leverage over the red Rowdy. He had pestered and fought with her for years. He had made it his personal mission to make her life as difficult as he possibly could since they were children, and not to mention that he had embarrassed her on too many occasions for her to count. She hadn't been able to do anything back then except ignore his antics and brush them off as best she could… but now… he was working under her, and he needed this job.
Blossom knew she shouldn't do it. She knew she should be the bigger person and help guide him along best she could, just like she did with everyone – but after years of putting up with his shit, it was finally time that she had some fun with him.
She wasn't going to do anything bad or malicious to him, but if he expected her to sign off on his papers… then she was going to make sure that he worked for it… and give him a taste of his own medicine while she was at it.
The best part about it was: he couldn't say anything against her.
She had all the power in their current dynamic – and god did it ever feel good.
"I'll sign these papers for you at the end of six months." Blossom spoke slowly, making deliberate eye contact with the clearly stunned man in front of her. "Hell, I'll even personally write you a glowing letter of recommendation if you do well here. If you want to stay after, fine. If you don't, then it's not my business where you go."
"You will?" her counterpart looked shocked. He rubbed the back of his neck as he fought back the flush she could see starting to creep up to his cheeks. "I… thanks? I think?"
"Of course. Sounds like Butch had to fight hard to get you in here and I don't want his efforts to go to waste… wherever he may be." She slowly crossed her legs deliberately, feeling far too calm for what she had planned.
She was going to get him good.
"I'm all for giving people second chances, as you know." Blossom examined her cuticles before meeting his gaze again. "But only if they deserve it."
Brick was absolutely silent and it took everything Blossom had in her not to grin at his expense.
"…Alright." The red head finally muttered. "What do you want from me?" Blossom only shook her head. "Not so fast. It's not as simple as that Brick." She pretended to lapse deep into thought for a moment before speaking again.
"You know… you really did try to make my life hell in high school." She let out a fake sigh, preparing to lay it on thick. "My dating life really suffered because of you. I still don't know if it was because you took enjoyment out of watching me struggle to get a date, or if it was because you just didn't want to see me with anyone else except for you. Not my words, mind you. Robin liked to say that, ridiculous as that sounds."
For some reason, Brick remained oddly silent instead of offering her one of his trademark sarcastic responses.
She elegantly rested her chin on her hand as she regarded him with a cool stare. "But even if, for some insane reason, that was the case; you never did ask me to any of the homecoming dances now, did you? At least, I can't remember an instance where you did. But I know that you always made sure that any potential dates I had were too scared to take me… or ask, for that matter."
Blossom looked at him from underneath her eyelashes, inwardly howling with laughter at the sight of his flustered expression. "People talk you know. I might not have said anything, but I know exactly what you did to all those poor guys who tried to take me out."
Brick swallowed thickly, suddenly looking hot under the collar. "Shit Bloss, that was like, close to a decade ago… You're really still pissed about that-?"
"Not to mention that you and your brothers constantly kept my sisters and I on our toes when we were kids – with the three of you constantly trying to destroy the city and all. We barely got a moments peace… especially me. I always got stuck with cleaning up the majority of your antics specifically."
The rose eyed woman could barely keep her façade up as she watched the colour slowly drain out of Brick's face. Really, he was making this too easy for her. She could easily go on naming his past transgressions against her, but she figured she would be nice and cut him some slack.
She tapped his papers on the desk beside her. "I'm going to sign your papers Brick. But I'm going to make you work it."
"Fuck sakes-" Brick began to growl only for Blossom to cut him off again.
"You're going to be working directly under me as an assistant of sorts, which means you respond to me and my needs. If I want you to grab something for me, you're going to grab it. If I tell you to work on a project, you better believe you're going to drop everything you're doing, and you're going to work on it until it's done to my satisfaction." She began to count off on her fingers; barely managing to keep her lips from peeling upwards, as she watched Brick's face begin to flush bright red out of a mixture of embarrassment and anger.
"I'm pretty sure this is what's called workplace harassment and blackmail." He finally snapped, and Blossom watched; amusedly, as the skin under his left eye jumped. She rolled her own rose-coloured eyes in response "Please. Like you've never done either before. This is just payback for the years of crap you put me through." This time, she couldn't hold back a grin as she watched Brick rub both of his temples with his hands.
"I'm starting to think that I'll take my chances somewhere else." He growled, shooting the window behind her a sideways glance.
"and go where exactly? No offence Brick, but your reputation precedes you. You need this job and you know it."
Goddamn, she really enjoyed having all the power over him.
The auburn-haired woman watched as her counterpart bit his lip in frustration and she knew she had him there. He really did need this job to get out of his sentence. Nowhere else would probably dare hire him due to his past. This company was his best shot. She, was his best shot.
It was a surprisingly sober thought.
It was that thought that made her drop the act slightly. Blossom hopped off the desk and moved closer to her counterpart until she was standing directly in front of him.
"I mean what I said." She promised him gently, causing Brick to look at her without a word. "I'll sign your papers and I'll even write you a letter of recommendation, provided that you don't cause any trouble here. But I'm not just going to give either of those things to you. You have to prove to me that you deserve it first."
Brick studied her silently for a moment, clearly trying to discern if she was pulling his leg or not. Finally, she sighed and held up her hand mockingly. "I swear on my honor as a Powerpuff Girl, that I will sign your papers and put in a good word for you to your parole officer. Is that good enough for you?"
After another moment, Brick sighed and nodded, putting his hands in his pockets. "Don't have much of a choice anyways. This was the only place that got back to me based on my record, and I don't want to have to keep applying to different companies."
Quite honestly, she didn't doubt him.
"Great, well then, this is your office." She gestured around the frosted walled room. "Your position is something of an assistant to me, like I was saying earlier-"
"So, I'm your bitch, essentially."
"I thought I made that clear before." Blossom shot him a shit-eating grin, causing the red eyed man to groan loudly. "Anyways, as my 'assistant', it's namely your job to keep an eye on things out here, and help me with certain projects should I require it. Oh, and I get to pass off projects onto you if I don't want to do them. I feel like I should warn you in advance."
Brick pushed a few strands of hair away from his face and blew out a sigh. "Shit, if I'd known I'd be working under you in our twenties, I wouldn't have scared off so many of your boy-toys when we were seniors. It would have made this less painful."
"About that… why did you make my dating life so miserable?" Blossom put the paper in her hand down on the desk behind her as she looked at him quizzically. "It's always something that I never understood, even now. The girls used to tease me all the time and say that it was because you wanted to take me on a date, but didn't want to ask, so you just liked to make sure that no one else wanted to either. I said that it was because you were just being an ass, but they seemed to think differently."
"Oh my god, and here I was thinking you were smart." Brick groaned as he slapped a palm to his forehead. "I resent that!" the auburn-haired woman snapped back without missing a beat. "Jesus Bloss are you seriously that fucking dense?" her counterpart retorted dryly.
"I don't know, I guess I must be, because I don't understand what you're trying to say here-"
"Blossom, I had a thing for you in high school alright? Our entire senior year I had the hots for you, so yeah, I liked you. A lot."
Blossom blinked, stupefied, as she tried to process what her counterpart had just said. Oh. Oh no. He wasn't being serious. There was no way. He wasn't playing the long game with her, now was he? Not after all this time-
Squinting at him, the pink Puff took in the abnormally flat look he was giving her and suddenly, she realized that he was actually being very serious with her.
Realistically, Blossom knew that this was a conversation for outside of work. This was one that they should have in private, or maybe even over drinks. But this was the first she had ever heard about his supposed interest in her, and she was rather interested in hearing his reasoning for acting as he had toward her back when they were still in school together.
"You… Liked me? In a more then friendly way?" she asked hesitantly, wanting to make sure she was hearing this right.
"Of course, I liked you." Brick huffed, crossing his arms over his chest. "You're smart and pretty, and damn near the only one who could match me in a fight – save for your fucking sister. BC can hit like truck when she wants to." He sighed, averting his eyes. "I never wanted to ask you out, because I knew the annoying teasing and shit that would come from our other classmates would never stop if I did, and I didn't want to deal with it. Sue me."
"So, you just made sure that no one else wanted to take me out." Blossom huffed. "I heard about the things you threated to do to Harry Pitt if he asked me to the spring fling senior year. No wonder he avoided me like the plague for months afterward." She glared at him. "God you're a selfish prick sometimes."
"I'm not a good person Blossom. I never pretended to be."
Blossom groaned, partly out of embarrassment. So, her sisters and Robin had been onto something the entire time. Had it really been that obvious? Or was she really just that dense-
"-and I gotta say, I still find you really, really attractive."
Blossom looked up in shock only to see Brick grinning wolfishly at her. "I saw you eyeing me up earlier in your office. The years have been kind to you too babe."
"That's because I couldn't believe it was you at first." She muttered defensively. "and watch what tone you take with me babe. I could still throw you out of this building if I want to."
Brick laughed. "Where's that hard-ass 'I'm-going-to-make-you-miserable' façade from earlier? Had to admit, you really had me going there, Pinky."
"It's defiantly not a façade. After years of putting up with your nonsense, I finally have the upper hand-"
Before she could even blink, Brick was looming over her, forcing her back against the desk in order to keep some space between them. He grinned, placing his hands on either side of her but Blossom didn't flinch, merely raising an eyebrow at his antics. "Who's in control now, eh? Bloss?"
"Still me. I won't hesitate to throw you out of this office through the glass if I have to."
"and yet you haven't."
"I'd rather not be the reason why my company has to pay for four new frames of glass. It's expensive. Besides, I can ragdoll your ass outside in the street whenever I want."
"Ouch. Harsh babe."
"I thought I told you not to call me that. I am your boss now."
"I never disagreed with you, but seriously, you're still a babe. I won't lie" He lowered his head slightly so that they were eye to eye, the sly grin ever-present on his lips. "For the record, I am sorry that I didn't ask you out. I should've. High school me was a fucking idiot."
"You're still an idiot."
"Nice to see you haven't changed much either there Bloss."
He leaned in closer and the corner of his mouth twitched upwards into a wicked smirk. "You know, I could make up for all that wasted time, here and now, if you wanted to."
Suddenly, she was grateful that the office glass was frosted and that no one could see them.
Inwardly Blossom wanted to hit him. Was he seriously implying what she thought he was? When exactly had he gotten so bold after just meeting up with her again after years of no contact – and at her work none the less. He had some balls, trying to pull a fast one on her like he was trying to do. God help her if someone were to walk in and catch them in a compromising position like the one they were currently in.
As much as she wanted to hit him and herself, all of the professionalism that she had built up over the years couldn't stop a small part of her from contemplating taking the red eyed man up on his offer. She would be lying to herself if she said that she didn't find him attractive, he had definitely grown up well since the last time they had seen each other…
Out of the corner of her eye, the small piece of paper laying innocently on the desk next to her caught her attention, and her resolve once again hardened, as she remembered why he was here in the first place.
Like she had told herself before: if he wanted this; the job, and hell, maybe even a shot with her – then he was going to have to work for it.
She wasn't going to make this easy for him. Not by a long shot. She was running the show now, and he was practically playing right into her hands.
So instead, she crossed her arms and quirked an unimpressed brow at him. "Really now? Your first day on the job and you want to start it off by trying to lay one on me in your new office? How do you know I won't kill you the second you try?"
Brick let out a throaty chuckle as he rested his forehead against hers, looking down at her lips. "Because if you weren't at least somewhat into me, you definitely would've thrown me through the glass by now."
"Touché."
She didn't put up any resistance, as he slowly dipped down. Despite what he thought, she was the one pulling the strings, and she had him right where she wanted him…
Brick's eyes slid shut as he leaned in, only for her to put a finger against his lips, causing his dark red orbs to open again. He looked at her, mildly irritated. "What? What's up?"
This time, there was no holding back the shit-eating grin that spread across her face. "Well, it's a shame you're my underling, otherwise I'd say we could take this somewhere else, but that would be a direct abuse of my power, and I refuse to have a sexual harassment claim filed against me."
Her counterpart blinked, and Blossom could see the gears working in his head as he tried to process what she was saying,
"You're fucking kidding me."
"I am not."
"So, you're really going to do this? Work me up, tease me, and then blue ball me in my own office?"
"Looks like it, yes."
"You bitch."
"Watch it. I could still change my mind about letting you work here." Blossom waged her finger at him, but she allowed her counterpart a small smile as she said it, letting her him know she was only teasing as she watched him visibly relax and back away from her, allowing her to push off from the desk he had her backed against.
"So… we're good? For now, at least?" Brick asked hesitantly after several minutes of silence. She nodded, not bothering to hide her grin at seeing his flustered expression. "Yeah, we're good for now. I'll write you up a work contract that's good for the next six months and I'll make a copy of it for you to send to your parole officer. I'm sure they'd like to see it."
Brick nodded mutely as she continued on, fixing him with a glare that would make even HIM shudder. "I mean it though, for the next six months, I own you. I'm putting not only my work credibility, but also my reputation on the line for you, and I swear to god, if you mess either of them up for me, I'll make sure you live to regret it."
"Yeah, yeah. You won't. Don't worry."
"I better not." Blossom muttered, but something in his tone told her that he was being genuine, allowing her to relax slightly. "This job isn't difficult. If you work anything like how I do, you'll be fine." She allowed the faintest ghost of a smirk to pall at her lips.
"Besides, if Butch of all people has worked here for this long without me hearing about any incidents, I'd say there's hope for you too."
"Gee thanks."
She laughed openly this time as she brushed past him and opened the door to the office. "I'll leave you to get situated. Tomorrow, I'll get you started working on a project with me and then I'll let you work independently once you're comfortable."
"Sure Bloss, maybe when we're done, I'll take you out for a drink… after work of course. Can't let anyone file a complaint against you for trying to entice a co-worker, or whatever."
The red Rowdy said it so flippantly, that if he had been anyone else, she would have thought he was simply joking, but she had known Brick for long enough, and she knew that it was an open invitation cleverly disguised as a sarcastic remark.
Who knows… maybe in time they could pick up where they had left off in the office…
It was that final thought that made Blossom smile.
"Yeah… I'd like that."
