Turn 30: Journey To The Past - Part 2

[Cellar]

(The lift reaches the bottom and Kallen gets out. Mrs Mamiya closes the panel to conceal it at the top and bottom. Kallen realises she is trapped, and moves forward to explore. She sees Nimrod still lying on the floor.)
VOICE [OC]: There's a new scent in the dark. There's a warming, pulsing, racing blood! Smells like ratkin.
(Another curtain moves aside and human sized insects in evening dress stagger out.)
VOICE [OC]: Wake up. Move yourselves. Come on. Ratkin's come to visit. Come on, move, move. Run, ratkin, run. Better get away.
(Kallen runs into the tunnel.)
VOICE [OC]: Fetch!
Kallen: You don't frighten me!
Doctor!
VOICE [OC]: Ratkin! Ratkin!
(The stuffed birds start squawking.)
VOICE [OC]: Ratkin!

[Study]

(Upstairs, Lelouch watches from the doorway as Emiko opens a chest containing specimens. She gets to the large bottom drawer, which contains a man in a Police Inspector's uniform.)
Lelouch: Beetles and bluebottles.
Emiko: It's one of my favourites in the whole collection. It's from Java.
Lelouch: Java?
Emiko: The Reverend Shingo Hoshino will be leaving for Java soon. Perhaps he'll see my father.
Lelouch: Your father, is he there?
Emiko: Uncle Josiah sent him there after he saw what was in the cellar.
Lelouch: Gwendoline, do you know where Ace is?

[Cellar]

(The giant insects have caught Kallen.)
VOICE [OC]: Revenge is nearer. Revenge, ratkin.
(Kallen is brought to the closed door. Nimrod grabs a lantern and forces the insects back to the alcoves.)
NIMROD: Get back! Back! Are you all right, miss?
Kallen: They don't like the flame, do they.
VOICE [OC]: Door must open.
NIMROD: We must leave the chamber now.
VOICE [OC]: Open door! Quickly, quickly!
(An insect moves to obey.)
Kallen: It's getting out! Give me that!
NIMROD: Stay calm! Follow me to the tunnel. While we have the lamp, we're safe.
VOICE [OC]: No more lamp.
(An insect smacks the lamp from Nimrod's hand and it breaks on the floor.)
VOICE [OC]: Stop ratkin.
(Kallen starts hitting an insect with a brass-tipped walking cane.)
Kallen: I'll sort you lot out.

[Entrance hall]

(Josiah is coming down the staircase.)
Lelouch: Josiah, where's Kallen?
JOSIAH: How should I know? Have you considered my offer, Doctor?
Lelouch: What, to murder your enemy? I'm not your pet executioner. Ace is in trouble.
JOSIAH: Be careful, Lelouch. To cross me could be a serious error.
Mamiya: Miss Kallen has already retired to bed, sir. Come, I will show you.
Emiko: Here, Lelouch, to light you to bed.
(Gwendoline brings a candle.)
Emiko: Sleep well. Goodnight.
Lelouch: Good night, sleep tight. Up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire, otherwise known as Java. Well, not tonight, Josiah-phine!
(Lelouch blows out the candle.)
Lelouch: Your puppet show doesn't fool me. Sorry to spoil your big game hunt, but Kallen need my
(The maids point hand guns at Lelouch's head.)
Lelouch: Help.

[Cellar]

(Kallen threatens the golden wall screen with the walking cane.)
Kallen: Let us go or I'll smash it!
NIMROD: Give it to me! You are profaning the temple of light.
Kallen: I'll profane you in a minute. And shut that thing up.
NIMROD: You are afraid and do not understand.
(Nimrod and Ace struggle for the cane.)
NIMROD: The sleeping one must not be woken!
(In their struggle, the cane hits the wall screen and gas hisses out of a side vent. Ace and Nimrod fall, and the insects recoil.)

[Entrance hall]

(An alarm goes off. Everyone turns to look at a stained glass window at the top of the stairs which is now pulsing.)
JOSIAH: The fool! What's it done?
(Lelouch takes his Geiger counter and puts it to the back of Josiah's head.)
Lelouch: Right, Josiah. Let's get down the rabbit hole. Get that lift!
(A maid obeys.)
Lelouch: Open those doors! Quickly!

[Cellar]

(Nimrod is on his knees in awe.)
Kallen: Steam power! Oi, Tarzan. Nimrod! What's happened? Nimrod!
(Josiah is cringing as he leads Lelouch along the tunnel.)
JOSIAH: Light.
Lelouch: At the end of the tunnel. Get a move on. Kallen?
Kallen: Doctor, where have you been?
Lelouch: Where haven't I been. I came as quick as I could.
JOSIAH: What have you done to my observatory?
Kallen: Get off! It's what it nearly did to me.
Lelouch: Kallen, you haven't been tampering?
Kallen: It was an accident.
JOSIAH: All my work could be ruined.
Lelouch: That's my girl.
Kallen: Oh, come on, Lelouch. Let's get out of this madhouse.
Lelouch: No, keep him covered.
Kallen: But
Lelouch: Shush.
(Lelouch pushes the Geiger counter into Kallen's hands.)
Kallen: Move it, you.

[Entrance hall]

(Emiko sits on the stairs, sobbing.)
Emiko: Why did Father go to Java and leave me? And where is Mama? I try and try, but I can't understand.
Mamiya: That is a wicked thing to say. Wicked. Your mother would be ashamed if she could hear you. Sitting there dressed like a music hall trollop. It's this Doctor, filling your head with his ideas.
Emiko: His words are so confusing. Uncle Josiah's ideas are much clearer.
Mamiya: Go upstairs and dress yourself decently.

[Cellar]

(Lelouch tries pushing a coloured rod back into the control panel. It pops back up and more steam gushes out of a vent at the side of the glowing panel. He hangs the dish cover over the vent. Josiah steps forward.)
Kallen: Don't try anything.
Lelouch: Oh, not a patch on the Flying Scotsman.
JOSIAH: Nimrod! Get up, you fool. It's got to be stopped.
Lelouch: Better not to move him.
Kallen: He fell against that thing.
Lelouch: He disturbed whatever's hibernating inside.
JOSIAH: Don't touch it!
(Josiah falls to his knees.)
Kallen: You're scared of it too, just like the others.
Lelouch: Because you know what's in there, don't you, Josiah?
JOSIAH: There's an energy escape. I must stop it.
Lelouch: Don't worry. I always leave these things to the last moment. These husks. Old cast-offs of yours, I take it?
Kallen: They attacked Nimrod and me.
JOSIAH: You're insane! If the membrane is broken
Lelouch: Yes?

(A section of the wall lights up with a formula.)
Kallen: Oh, what?
Lelouch: Genetic codes.
Kallen: DNA.
(Behind their backs, Josiah reaches into a drawer in the table.)
Lelouch: You've done a lot of exploring in here, haven't you, Josiah?
Kallen: This is a stone spaceship.
Lelouch: Yes, and the real owner won't be pleased when it wakes up.
(Josiah has got a gun.)
JOSIAH: I am the real owner.
Lelouch: Oh no, you're not. You're just part of the cargo.
JOSIAH: You're so smug and self-satisfied, Lelouch.
Lelouch: I try.
Kallen: Drop it.
JOSIAH: I'm not a simpleton. That device is a radiation detector, not a gun.
(Lelouch takes it back and puts it in his pocket.)
JOSIAH: You're going to help me stabilise the energy loss, or most of southern Japan goes up in a firestorm.
VOICE [OC]: Set me free.

[Redver's room]

(Redvers is struggling in his strait-jacket when Emiko enters wearing a dress.)
REDVERS: Not much time left. Soon be light.
Emiko: Mister Fenn-Cooper.
REDVERS: So, you've seen Redvers, too. Where are they holding the poor devil? I know he's close by.
Emiko: I'm lost. I'm so lost and alone.
REDVERS: Redvers got used to loneliness in the bush. He understands.
Emiko: I cannot find my mother. I'm sure she was here.
REDVERS: Don't be alarmed. Redvers Fenn-Cooper always escapes in the end. He knows where the greatest secret of all is hidden. It sleeps in the depths of the interior, and it must never be woken.

[Cellar]

JOSIAH: Drive in the crystal rods when I instruct you.
Kallen: After this I'll get a job at Tokyo. It'll be safer.
Lelouch: (sotto) Just do what I do when I do it.
Kallen: Hmm, very helpful.
JOSIAH: Lower the first rod.
Lelouch: Oh dear, oh dear. Skeletons in the cupboard. Husks in the cellar.
Kallen: Bats in the belfry.
JOSIAH: Do it!
Lelouch: Now, now, don't shout. You'll never evolve into a nice Victorian gentleman if you shout.
Kallen: Did those husks really used to be him?
Lelouch: Yes. Not much improvement on the reptile, is he?
(Josiah puts his revolver under the Lelouch's nose.)
JOSIAH: Just do it! Now!
(Lelouch pushes a rod and pulls the serving cover off the steam vent. Josiah gets a face full of it and recoils in agony. Kallen picks up his gun.)
Lelouch: Well, I think congratulations are in order.
Kallen: Congratulations? Maybe not. Professor, the husks!
VOICE [OC]: Give me freeness. I want freeness!
(Josiah runs for the tunnel as the husks open the door. Kallen and Lelouch pick up Nimrod and follow him.)
Lelouch: Quick, get up! Move! Move!
VOICE [OC]: Control needs freeness now!

[Lift]

(They scramble into the lift and shut the grill.)
Kallen: Quick, Lelouch!
VOICE [OC]: Help me be like you.
Kallen: Look out!
(A hand in a long white evening glove reaches in, stopping the grill and outer doors from closing and grabbing at Lelouch.)
CONTROL [OC]: Give me my freeness!
Lelouch: Ah, how do you do. I'm Lelouch and this is my friend Kallen.
Kallen: Just call me ratkin.
CONTROL [OC]: Ah, poor Control. No way out. No escaping. No hoping.
JOSIAH: Don't listen to it. It's a depraved monstrosity.
Lelouch: Depraved or deprived? There, there, Control. There, there. Now, which of you is the Jekyll and which is the Hyde?
CONTROL [OC]: Spare a farthing, Guv'nor. Pity poor Control, locked away all alone.
JOSIAH: Fie!
(Josiah hits the arm. It recoils and Kallen gets the grill shut. The outer doors close and Nimrod operates the lift.)

[Entrance hall]

Mamiya: They're coming. It's almost first light.
(The Grandfather clock says 4:35.)

[Lift]

[Entrance hall]

(Kallen and Lelouch step out of the lift to be greeted by the maid's guns. Josiah pulls the handle off the back of the lift.)
JOSIAH: I've sealed the lower observatory. Let Control rot down there.
Mamiya: You are ill, sir.
(Two maids help Josiah away.)
JOSIAH: It's getting light. Secure the house. I must change.
PRITCHARD: Take him to the upper observatory.
(Gwendoline has changed into a dress.)
Emiko: Uncle!
Lelouch: We won't see them till nightfall.
(They help Nimrod out of the lift.)
Kallen: Shouldn't we follow them? What about Josiah?
Lelouch: He sounded a little husky.
Kallen: Oh, you mean he's changing into one of those things?
Lelouch: Yes.

[Attic]

(Josiah shoots at a picture of Nobusuke Kishi, waking the Reverend Hoshino, who is sitting in front of the Tardis.)
Hoshino: So, here you are at last. Haven't I been kept waiting long enough?
JOSIAH: Reverend Matthews.
Hoshino: I perceive you are a sick man, sir. Divine retribution for your blasphemy, perhaps?
JOSIAH: It will pass.
Hoshino: And so will your unholy theories of evolution. It's a complete absurdity that the line of my ancestors could be traced back to a protoplasmic globule.
JOSIAH: Please, go on.
(Josiah offers the Reverend a bowl of fruit. He takes the banana.)
Hoshino: Man has been the same, sir, since he stood in the garden of Eden, and he was never ever a chattering gibbering ape.
(Josiah laughs.)
Hoshino: What are you laughing at? Devil take you, why are you laughing?
(The Reverend's hands are now very hairy.)

[Drawing room]

Emiko: Can Nimrod be woken now?
Lelouch: Oh, don't rush me, Emiko. The sun has got its hat on, and we've got all day before Uncle Josiah dare show his face.
(Kallen is reading a large book.)
Kallen: Lelouch. Josiah's lucifigus.
Lelouch: Yes. He doesn't like light, either.
Kallen: What about the spaceship in the cellar? It's knackered, isn't it?
Lelouch: Yes. I fixed it. Uncle Josiah knows as much about it's secrets as a hamburger knows about the Amazon desert.
Kallen: Sounds a bit like you.
(Emiko looks through the curtains.)
Emiko: Light!
(She runs out of the room.)
Lelouch: Let her go. Come on, Kallen. We've only just started. Now, there's one thing you haven't told me. What was it that frightened you so much when you entered this house in a hundred years time?
(But Kallen has fallen asleep in an armchair.)

[Attic]

JOSIAH: Reverend Hoshino, I thought you would amuse me, but you bore me just as much as you did before.
(Hoshino is very hairy, and squatting on the chair instead of sitting on it.)
JOSIAH: Emiko. Come here, dear child.
Emiko: Are you unwell, Uncle?
JOSIAH: Only sick at heart, my dear. Soon I shall restore the blighted Japanese Empire to its full power and vigour.
Hoshino: You're no better than animals. (chimp noises)
JOSIAH: The Reverend makes such a tedious toy, don't you think?
(Josiah produces a small bottle, and Gwendoline's eyes light up with joy.)
Emiko: Dear Uncle.
(Emiko takes out a handkerchief for Josiah to pour liquid onto.)
JOSIAH: We're so glad he has to go.
Emiko: And where is he going?
JOSIAH: To Java!

[Drawing room]

(Lelouch opens the bottom drawer.)
Lelouch: Time to call out the constabulary. Now, Inspector, perhaps you can assist us with our enquiries.
(Lelouch clicks his fingers until the Inspector's eyes open.)

[Bedroom]

(Someone has undressed Kallen and put her to bed. Mrs Hayakawa draws the curtains and she wakes.)
Kallen: Hello?
Hayakawa: The Doctor said that you'd be fair famished when you woke up, so here's scrambled egg, hot buttered toast, kedgeree, kidney, sausage and bacon.
Kallen: Cholesterol city.
Hayakawa: Oh, no dear. Perivale village. Properly exhausted you were when I put you to bed. Oh yes, and there's a message. Would you join the Doctor and the police gentleman in the drawing room.
(Mrs Hayakawa takes a dress from the wardrobe and hangs it up on the screens.)
Kallen: Police?
Hayakawa: It's high time they were called. I've said as much to my husband, Mister Grose.
Kallen: I think I'll give that a miss, actually. I want to have a walk round Perivale village before lunch. Is there a blacksmith on the village green?
Hayakawa: Mercy me, no, dearie. There's only seven houses. Besides, you've missed lunch. Why, it must be all of five o'clock by now.
Kallen: What!
Hayakawa: Yes, almost evening. Now, we must hurry. No one in their right mind stays in this house after dark.

[Drawing room]

Lelouch: Snap out of it, Nimrod. If I didn't know better I'd say this was deliberate. Ten minutes was all it took to wake up the more sophisticated, civilised, police inspector.
(The Inspector enters, eating a sandwich.)
Oguri: Ah, you say this house is owned by Josiah Samuel Smith.
Lelouch: I didn't say owned, I said inhabited.
Oguri: Then where is he? This whole house is deserted.
Lelouch: He will appear.
Oguri: I suppose this must be the manservant. Nasty looking customer. Must be a foreigner.
Lelouch: Neanderthal.
Oguri: Ah, gypsy blood. I can see it in him. Lazy workers. What's this one playing up over? Oh, beg your pardon.
(The Inspector brushes crumbs from the Doctor's jacket.)
Lelouch: He's mesmerised.
Oguri: No self-control, these Mediterraneans. Too excitable. Nasty tempers, too.
Lelouch: Yes, especially when roused. Which is exactly what is eluding me at the moment.

[Bedroom]

(Mrs Hayakawa knocks on the door and enters.)
Hayakawa: Have you finished, dear? Oh, is anything wrong?
Kallen: Where's my clobber? My gear? My clothes.
Hayakawa: Those shabby old things? Why, Lelouch had me lay out this for you. Well, will it do, my dear?
Kallen: No bustle. Okay, Professor, you win.
(Mrs
Hayakawa shows Ace a corset. She looks horrified.)
Hayakawa: Much more fitting for a young lady.

[Lift shaft]

(An arm in an evening glove reaches up to push the lift grill further open.)
CONTROL: Control be free to change.

[Drawing room]

Lelouch: I'm busy, Inspector.
Oguri: And I have my investigation to complete.
Lelouch: Still not found the mustard? Since I awoke you, you have consumed three English breakfasts, two elevenses and one four-course meal. Why don't you go and get Mrs Hayakawa to make you some afternoon tea.
Oguri: She's hiding facts from me, and so are you, and if you don't tell me where the rest of the household is, I shall arrest you for obstructing my enquires.
(During this speech, Ace enters wearing the dress. The Doctor hands off a bottle of smelling salts to the Inspector and goes to her.)
Kallen: Lelouch, you could have woken me sooner.
Lelouch: This is Inspector Oguri from Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He was sent here in 1956 to investigate the disappearance of the owner, Sir Ichirō Mamiya.
Kallen: But that was two years ago.
Lelouch: Yes, he's been in Josiah's cupboard ever since. Preserved, hypnotised. Humour him.
Kallen: Preserved?
Lelouch: Inspector? This is my friend, Kallen.

Kallen: Hello. All right?
Lelouch: I like the dress.
(Lelouch returns to Nimrod.)
Oguri: Perhaps you can tell me where Lady Mamiya is, Miss?
Kallen: Oh, you mean the old bag, the housekeeper?
Oguri: I gather you live in Nagiso village.
Kallen: I'll be moving to the area, sometime. How's Tarzan?
Lelouch: Still no change. Still out like a light. Light!
(Nimrod grabs Kallen's wrist.)

[Outside the drawing room]

(Something is coming.)
DOCTOR [OC]: The fang of the cave bear calls you, Nimrod. Tell me your tale.

[Drawing room]

NIMROD: At the season when the ice floods swamp the pasture lands, we herded the mammoths sunwards to find new grazing.
Oguri: Tricky things, mammoths.
NIMROD: Wise men cast bones to make hunting magic and spoke with the voice of the Burning One.
Kallen: Is this a race memory?
Lelouch: No, these are his own experiences.
NIMROD: Now the wild world is lost in a desert of smoke and straight lines. There is smoke thickening.
(The thing outside moves away.)
NIMROD: But light will return.

[Lift]

CONTROL: Light will return.
(And closes the doors.)

[Entrance hall]

Oguri: This madhouse needs one more good going over.
Lelouch: Good idea. But try and be back by six.
Kallen: Lelouch, look.
Lelouch: Yes.
Oguri: Why?
Lelouch: Around here, the forces of darkness don't wait until midnight to appear.
Kallen: Lelouch.
Lelouch: I know.
Kallen: I thought the lift was broken.
Lelouch: I mended it. It's very clever, climbing up the lift shaft, but I had hoped that Control creature might bring something with it, and for that it will need the lift.
Kallen: Lelouch, what's going on?

[Drawing room]

Kallen: Lelouch?
Lelouch: Quiet. Josiah Samuel Smith and Control are frightened of it. Redvers Fenn-Cooper saw it and lost his mind. Nimrod, he worships it.
Kallen: Let there be light?
Lelouch: It's asleep down there in its spaceship and Josiah doesn't want it awoken.
Kallen: Well, maybe that's a good idea. Maybe it should be left alone. Professor, just this once.
Lelouch: It's very, very old. Perhaps even older. Just one chat.
Kallen: Lelouch. Where's Nimrod?
Lelouch: Gone to see a man about a god.
(There is a chirping sound from the specimen cabinet. Kallen opens it.)
Kallen: Urgh! They're alive.
Lelouch: Yes. Things are hotting quicker than I anticipated. Quick, run and get Inspector Oguri.

[Redver's room]

(Nimrod enters and locks the door behind him.)
REDVERS: Redvers knew the relief column would arrive.
NIMROD: Excuse me, sir, but you speak with the wildness of the old world. Is it appropriate to seek your wisdom?
REDVERS: You won't get far without good supplies. Baggage animals, porters.
NIMROD: The one I serve, sir, the Burning One, he's waking. What should I do?
REDVERS: Stanley found Livingstone. I found Redvers, once. You must hunt the dark continent. Seek out what you desire. But be warned, you may find it.
(Nimrod produces a knife.)
NIMROD: I must free you from your bonds, sir.
REDVERS: The Doctor did that hours ago. Redvers only wears it against the cold of the night air.

[Cellar]

(The figure is at the console, pushing at rods and ordering the husks about.)
CONTROL: Move! Time going faster than you. Move. Light angry, burning angry, but not at poor Control. Control going showing Light way up. Then Control on way up too!
(The wall screen breaks and light floods in. Control and the husks hide their eyes.)

[Corridor]

(In the top of the house, the Inspector tries the handle of a door concealed behind a curtain. A bird screeches, making him jump, then Kallen comes round the corner, startling him even more.)
Kallen: Inspector? Found anything?
Oguri: Nothing. This place has more locked doors than Reading Gaol.
(The door swings open. Ace goes through and up the stairs first.)

[Drawing room]

(Lelouch is talking to a cockchafer crawling over his hand.)
Lelouch: All civilisation starts with hunting and foraging, but don't worry, you'll work your way up. You must excuse me. Things are getting out of control.

[Attic]

(A lit candle on a small side table, and three dust cloths covering what appear to be figures.)
Oguri: No one up here, either.
(Kallen removes the dust cloth from Josiah.)
Kallen: Josiah.
Oguri: Disgusting object. What is it?
Kallen: It's what's left of Josiah Smith. It's just a husk. I think we should get out of here.
Oguri: Nonsense, young lady. That thing isn't dangerous.
(Oguri uncovers Mrs Mamiya.)
Oguri: Lady Pritchard!
Kallen: Lady?
Oguri: Sir Ichirō's wife.
(The next figure is -)
Kallen: Emiko. She's their daughter, isn't she.
Oguri: What's happening in this house?
Kallen: They're just toys. They're just Josiah's toys.
(Another sheet covers a large display cabinet. Kallen reads the plate at the bottom.)
Kallen: Homo Victorianus Ineptus. Oh no, I don't want to see.
(Oguri uncovers it to reveal the Reverend Hoshino posed as a chimpanzee in a jungle, holding a banana.)
Kallen: Reverend Hoshino. I think I'm going to throw up.

[Entrance hall]

(Nimrod is standing by the lift.)
Lelouch: Nimrod, where's Kallen?
NIMROD: I have not seen her, Lelouch. I must seek the truth from the Burning One.
Lelouch: Stick around. I'll save you a trip.
NIMROD: Can you summon it, then?
Lelouch: Let's just say I've made a deal with its agent.
(The lift is coming up.)
Lelouch: That'll be them now. Where's Ace got to? It's not dark yet, but I don't want Josiah to miss the show.
(Lelouch moves the hand of the grandfather clock from 5:45 to 6:00. It strikes the hour and the four maids come out of their hidden alcoves.)

[Attic]

Kallen: Let's get out of here, quickly.
(Emiko and Mrs Mamiya stand up. Emiko grabs Kallen from behind and they struggle.)
Oguri: Let go of her! I am a police officer. You will do as I tell you.
(Mrs Mamiya backhands Oguri into Josiah's lap, where he is held tight.)
Oguri: Let go of me!
(The new, fresh-faced Josiah with long green hair steps out from behind a large painting.)
Kallen: It's Josiah!

G.G.: You mean G.G.
(Emiko lets Kallen go.)
Kallen: Stitch this, Dracula.
(Kallen runs to a window and raises the blind.)
G.G.: I no longer need to crouch in shadows, young lady.
(Mrs Mamiya grabs Kallen by the hair.)
Kallen: You're no gentleman. Scratch the Victorian veneer and something nasty'll come crawling out.
G.G.: Your meddling Lelouch thought to get the better of me, but I'll see him squirming yet. Bring her!
Oguri: Let go of me! I am a police officer. You will do as I say.
(Oguri finally gets out of the clutches of the husk.)

[Entrance hall]

Lelouch: That's quite enough of that.
(Lelouch stops the grandfather clock's pendulum.)
NIMROD: Lelouch, you are as powerful as you are wise.
Lelouch: Cut the homespun twaddle, Nimrod. It's not wise. I've lit the blue touch-paper and found there's nowhere to retire to. Ladies, I do hope you enjoy indoor fireworks.
(A light glows behind the stained glass.)
NIMROD: The Burning One is coming.
Lelouch: Hmm. I'd stand back from that lift, Nimrod, if I were you. To catch a wolf, I may have unleashed a tiger.
(G.G. leads Kallen, Pritchard and Gwendoline down the staircase.)
G.G.: Lelouch, what are you doing? Stop the lift!
Lelouch: Ah, G.G.. So you've finally evolved into a Victorian. How quaint. And Kallen, you've made it in time.
Kallen: Sorry, Lelouch.
(Mrs Mamiya won't let her go.)
Lelouch: Oh, don't apologise. Come and meet Josiah's new guest.
G.G.: Nimrod, stop the lift! Stop it!
Lelouch: Much too late for that. It's now time to shed a little light on your plans.
Mamiya: Hold him.
(Two maids grab Lelouch and twist his arms behind his back.)

Kallen: Lelouch!
Lelouch: Don't worry, Kallen.
G.G.: You've made a pact with that creature. You don't know what you're doing.
(Inspector Oguri appears at the top of the stairs.)
Lelouch: No, but I'm about to find out. You can come out now! We're all waiting!
(The lift doors open and a veiled, stooped figure steps out.)
G.G.: Control, quintessence of wickedness, corruption incarnate.
Lelouch: Thank you for trusting me, Control.
(Control removes a veil to reveal a female face.)
CONTROL: My half agreeing done. You desiring, in the darkness you shall find it.
G.G.: Don't let it out!
(G.G. runs to shut the lift doors, and gets an electric shock.
CONTROL: Too late!
Lelouch: Light?
(The lift doors fling open and a blinding light floods out. Only Lelouch does not flinch and turn away from it. Kallen has to squint to keep looking.)
