Chapter 1: Sleigh Bells Ring, Are You Listening
"I announce… the annual Secret Santa!" announced Molly, throwing her hands up in the air.
"You're going to go down, suckers!" Mundungus cackled wickedly.
"That includes you," Sirius returned.
"I'm going to win over you all!" cried Arthur. "Don't even try!"
Molly had just announced the annual Order of the Phoenix Secret Santa. Order Members were randomly picked from a hat. Molly coordinated the event every year, and she was explaining the rules to everyone who was participating; that was, James and Lily, Remus and Tonks, Molly herself and Arthur, Bill, Fleur, Sirius, Mundungus, and Emmeline. Dumbledore was going to play Santa.
"Settle down, now," Molly fussed. "Now, I am going to explain the rules. Each one of you is going to be assigned one of the other players. You have to buy a gift for them and give it to Dumbledore. He will give them to the person so they don't know who it came from. Then, on the twenty-fifth, we'll all open our gifts and try to guess who gave us the gift."
"So is zit a competition?" Fleur asked, her blonde hair gleaming.
"You bet," Arthur told her. "Basically, we…"
"I'm explaining the rules here!" Molly interrupted, glaring at Arthur. "Let me continue!"
"Oh, sorry," Arthur mumbled.
"Here, we have the Sorting Hat," Molly instructed, holding out the Sorting Hat for everyone to see. "Everyone here has written their name on a slip of paper. I will pass the hat around, and each person will draw one slip from the hat. You will not be able to see anyone else's paper. They are bewitched. Okay? Everyone ready?"
Everyone nodded. The Sorting Hat grumbled.
"Good, good. Now, Arthur, you select first."
Arthur took a piece of paper from the hat. Lily.
"Sirius, you're next."
Sirius took a piece of paper from the hat. Mundungus.
"Now it's your turn, Bill."
Bill took a piece of paper from the hat. Emmeline.
"Next is Fleur."
Fleur took a piece of paper from the hat. James.
"Tonks, darling, you're next."
Tonks took a piece of paper from the hat. Bill.
Molly wrinkled her nose. "Mundungus, if you would…"
Mundungus took a piece of paper from the hat. Molly.
"Remus, it's your turn now."
Remus took a piece of paper from the hat. Fleur.
"Now, Emmeline."
Emmeline took a piece of paper from the hat. Arthur.
"Lily, if you would?"
Lily took a piece of paper from the hat. Sirius.
"Okay. James, you're next."
James took a piece of paper from the hat. Tonks.
"Now, myself!"
Molly took the last piece of paper from the hat. Remus.
"Okay, done! Now, remember: the name that you pulled from the hat is the person who you're giving a gift to. You must buy a gift for them and give it to Dumbledore. The goal is for them not to guess that it's you," Molly instructed.
"So like," interrupted Fleur, "I would give Ja… I mean, I would give the person I got, something zat Molly would get?" Thankfully, no one noticed her slip up, because her French accent managed to cover it up.
Molly shook her head. "No, no! That's all wrong! You're misunderstanding! You would give the person you got something you wouldn't get. It doesn't have to be what I get."
"Ah."
Molly rolled her eyes. This made no sense.
"Anybody have any questions?" she asked, the tone in her voice sounding as if she would murder whoever had the question.
"Can I gift my person some of my loot?" Mundungus asked. "I got quite a bit of-"
"NO!"
"Can you tell me who yours is?" asked Tonks, who was lying on the sofa with her head in Remus's lap.
"No," said Remus. "Sorry."
"Why not? Because it's me?"
He leaned down to kiss the top of her head. "Because then it ruins the whole surprise. And besides, if everyone went around telling everyone who isn't their person, then there would only be one person left to be the person."
"That was confusing."
He frowned. "But it made sense."
She laughed. "I'm sure it made sense in your brain. But I didn't understand it at all."
"Basically, if I have a person on my card, and I tell…"
"Leave it, I was joking," she said, grinning. "It's okay. But that means I'm not telling you my person either."
"That's the whole point of the game, love," he replied with a smile. "It's called Secret Santa for a reason, you know."
She snuggled more cozily into his thigh. "I know, I know, I'm not stupid. I just wanted to cheat."
"Knowing Molly, she's put all the charms on these things," he said thoughtfully. "So that you can't cheat."
"Oh, really?" She sat up and wiggled her eyebrows. "Let's see if the charms hold, then."
He looked amused. "Dora, you just want to see who my person is."
"No, of course not. I just want to make sure Molly's spells are still up to level. You know, she's part of the Order, and it's important that we're all in top form, and…"
"Dora."
"Fine, fine. I won't." She sat back and crossed her arms over her chest.
Remus reached over to pat her head clumsily. "It'll be more fun that way."
"I guess, but…"
"Am I interrupting something?" asked Sirius, who had just entered the sitting room.
"No, of course not," said Remus. "This is your house, anyway."
"Yes, but…" Sirius winked. "There may be things you don't want me to see."
Tonks made a face. "You're so dirty-minded, Sirius. Hey, can you tell me whose Secret Santa you are?"
"Sure!" Sirius said. "But only if you tell me whose Secret Santa you are."
"Okay," said Tonks. "Wait, let's not say it out loud. Otherwise Remus will know, and he doesn't want to know."
"You guys shouldn't be doing this," muttered Remus.
Tonks and Sirius exchanged grins.
"Okay," Sirius instructed. "I'll give you my paper, and you'll give me yours."
"That works," said Tonks, and the two of them traded little slips of paper.
"I don't think this is a very good idea," Remus warned.
"I can't see anything?" Tonks asked, confused. "The paper's blank, see?" She held it up to Sirius, who frowned.
"No, it says the name right there! Can't you see?"
"Can you see mine?" asked Tonks.
Sirius examined the piece of paper. "Nope. This is so weird! What's going on?"
"Molly must have charmed them," Remus explained, half amused, half exasperated. "So that you can't see other people's papers."
"Darn," Tonks muttered. "I want to know who yours is, though, Sirius! Is it me?"
"No," Sirius said. "Am I yours?"
"No, you're not," Tonks assured. "Is yours Remus?"
"Stop," Remus moaned. "Don't give away everything!"
"Be nice to your girlfriend," Sirius scolded. Tonks grinned and patted Sirius on the arm. "Come on, Tonks, let's go to the other room and talk about our people."
"Come on, you guys," Remus called from the sofa. "You're ruining the entire element of surprise!"
But neither of them appeared to have heard, so Remus sighed and ran after them.
"Where were we?" Tonks was whispering. "Oh, yeah, is yours Remus?"
"Tonks," Remus said, entering the room. "Sirius. Guys, it'll be more fun if you don't know."
"But I won't know everyone's person, just Sirius's!" Tonks protested.
"Come on, love," he coaxed. "What's the guarantee either of you will actually keep quiet and not tell anyone else?"
Neither of them answered.
"Exactly," Remus said. "I fully trust both of you to go blabber to other people. It'll be more fun if it's a surprise."
"Fine," Tonks relented with a small frown. "But I already know that Sirius isn't my Secret Santa."
"And I know Tonks isn't mine," Sirius added.
"Yes, but no more." Remus wrapped his arms around Tonks's stomach. "That's all you guys get to know."
"Are you my Secret Santa?" Tonks asked him, with big, puppy dog eyes.
"Stop, that's not going to work," Remus said firmly. "I won't tell you."
She wrapped her arms around his neck, tilting her face towards her so that there was a hair's breadth between their lips.
"Please?"
Remus sighed. She really was too tempting for her own good.
"No."
"No you're not my Secret Santa, or no you won't tell me?"
"No, I'm not your Secret Santa," he relented.
"I finally got you to tell me!" she exclaimed. "About time! So who is the person you're getting a present for?"
"That I'm not telling," he said, crossing his arms over her chest. "You already know it's not you."
"Is it Sirius?" she asked.
"I'm not telling you two another word."
"Well, can I give you guys my wishlist?" Tonks asked eagerly. "So whoever it is buys something I want?"
Remus and Sirius exchanged amused looks. "Sure," said Remus. "Give us your wishlist."
"Okay," Tonks said, leaning back onto Remus, who tightened his grip around her waist. "So, I want a teddy bear, a…"
"You want a teddy bear?" Sirius asked incredulously.
"Shush, let her continue," Remus scolded.
"I see how it's become," Sirius grumbled.
"So a teddy bear," continued Tonks, "or maybe a…"
"But isn't Remus already your teddy bear?" Sirius interrupted snidely.
"Yes, but I want a stuffed animal teddy bear," Tonks said, annoyed at being interrupted again.
"I don't get it," Sirius said.
"How can you not-"
"Tonks, calm down," Remus interjected. "He's only trying to wind you up. Continue."
"Hmph," Tonks huffed, glaring daggers at Sirius, who only grinned. "A teddy bear, and maybe a quilt? Quilts are great. They're soft and warm and…"
"But you already have Remus," Sirius said again.
"Shut up." Tonks glared at him. "Teddy bear and quilt."
"That's it?" Remus asked her. She nodded, and he placed a tender kiss on the top of her head, still holding her. "Okay, then. Sirius, do you wish to share your wishlist as well?"
"Sure," Sirius said, shrugging. "I want a girlfriend."
"Sirius!" Tonks shrieked, appalled. "You can't wish for that!"
James walked over to Lily, who was knitting a red and green scarf.
"Who'd you get?" he asked, starling her. He hoped he could startle an answer out of her.
She did a small little jump, and then shook her head. "Not telling you. Nice try, though."
"Oh, come on," James groaned. "Just… Is it me?"
"Not telling," she replied, raising an eyebrow. "Molly would murder me."
"You're afraid of getting killed by a sweet little… teddy bear?"
"Excuse me? Teddy bear? Have you seen her when she gets angry?"
"Er… yeah, I have."
"Right. So she's not a teddy bear," Lily replied as if it were obvious.
James rolled his eyes. "But-"
"I'm not telling you who it is," she said firmly. "Now shut up."
"Ergh. Anyway, who's the scarf for?"
Lily pushed her hair behind her shoulders as she continued to weave the scarf. "I'm just making a holiday bundle for a bunch of people that we know. I need you to help me make chocolate tomorrow."
"Chocolate?" James groaned. "Who makes chocolate?"
"We do," Lily responded. "And you have to help me. I have to weave these scarves, I've got to get stuff for Harry and Liana, and I have to go buy gifts for…"
"For?" James urged. "Who's the person, Lily?"
"I can't say! I seriously can't."
James groaned. "It's not a crime to tell me, you know."
"According to Molly, it is. I'm not going to ruin the point of the game, James."
"Fine, fine," moaned James, sinking down next to her and peeking over her shoulder. "Knitting looks boring."
"It's weaving. And it's not. Don't you have anything better to do than to annoy me?"
"Not really," James replied, grinning. "But I can leave if you want me to."
She sighed. "No, you can stay," she replied as she set down the needle and put the finished scarf in a basket, where a bunch of others were sitting.
"Why anyone would make holiday bundles," scoffed James.
